Brooke (brookeluvsbooks) I use to hate reading because I could never find a book that I liked enough to finish. Then the summer before 7th grade I was so bored and my neighbor said I should try to read the Harry Potter books. I read up to Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix that summer and have loved reading ever since. :]

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

My mother read to my brothers and I from the time we were little kids. I've always loved books and reading, and I was so excited at age 5 to get my own library card!

I've been reading ever since.

message 3: by Hayley (new)

Hayley (minidf) | 15 comments I've been reading since I remember, I used to annoy the teachers at my primary school because chances are I'd already have read the book they wanted to read in story time and I'd whisper to my friends 'oh you'll love this bit in a minute'. I think it might be my moms fault though, I remember her saying to me when I was little "once you learn to read its like you've got a key to another world, there's always going to be an adventure to go on and you can never be bored".

Thanks mom!

I used to hate reading because I was always terrible at finding books that I liked. The summer before 7th grade, we were required to read a Rick Riordan book and I chose The Lightning Thief. I absolutely loved it and finished the entire series in less than a week. Ever since I have loved reading. Last summer I read over 50 books :)

Water & Fire (water_and_fire) | 1 comments İ hated to read books and never read a book more than a 100 pages instead İ was playing all the time. One day İ was bored to death and then İ started to read the first book of Harry Potter... İ became a fan of Harry Potter. Ever since İ'm reading books every second İ have. Once, even my parents told me to stop reading because İ was reading to much :D but İ never listened to them :D

message 6: by Jason (new)

Jason Purdy | 1 comments My parents started reading to me when I was 3 or 4 years old. From there, they got my a library card as soon as I was old enough and I'd usually end up begging them to take me every weekend. We didn't have a lot of money so the library was a lifesaver. I'd go through 3 or 4 books a week and have pretty much done that since then. Almost 22 now, and I still read every day. I loves it.

message 7: by Renee (new)

Renee When I read Narnia when I was eight, I just kept reading fantasy and stuff until I got old enough to start reading Yound Adult as well.
And before that my parents read to me and I had take home readers from my primary school! he he, but I was in advanced group so I had boring documentary books to read.
So I discovered other books and Enid Blyton!

message 8: by Joyce (new)

Joyce | 2 comments My granddaughter lent me a Dean Koontz book about 4-5 years ago and had to read everything I could get my hands on ever since. There are some series's I might start to read over again.

We bought the same granddaughter the Harry Potter books in England as they came out so before the 7th book came out I started over and read them all in less than a month. They were even better the second time.

message 9: by Betina (new)

Betina (betina1) | 13 comments I have a sister who is 8 years older than me.. She began reading books for me/with me when I was about 7/8 years old.. She read Sølvhesten(Silverhorse in English) to me, and I liked it so much that I have been reading it frequently ever since... after that I slowly became interested in reading - and I have ever since :)

message 10: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa Lee My mom was always a really big reader, and she bought me a lot of childrens books to read at about 2 or 3. I could somewhat talk, so I got me preschool teacher to help teach me how to read in naptime every day. When I started kindergarten, I still had to go to that preschool/daycare after school everyday. Since I was older, I didn't have to do naptime at all, so I always brought books. Well, one day I went to goodwill in search of books with my parents, and found the adventures of tom sawyer. I read it during the naptime for the next two weeks after school, and have been reading all kinds of books since.

Clare dooley (claredooley) | 29 comments Detention , suspension & getting grounded.. A lot. When you can't speak, no phone, I'm from the kids did NOT HAVE CELL PHONES OR COMPUTERS IN THEIR BEDROOMS ERA so books were something I could do, & it made me forget I wasn't at recess or aloud to watch tv or talk on the phone.
It began a life long love affair that began with C.S. Lewis , Narnia books, my elder sisters sweet valley high & the babysitting club yup, I admit it! Lol and then branched out into dragon lance , robin McKinley , Grimms original tales.. And the love affair continued on, all the way until today:)

message 12: by Ioanna (new)

Ioanna | 2 comments The first book i ever read was about a robot boy . That book used to belong to my older cousin , i think . It was very sad because that little boy died and the man who had made it fixed it . I still believe it was yhe best book i have ever read !

message 13: by Kree (new)

Kree My sister is 2 years older than me so when we were little naturally she started reading before me. So I would ask her to read to me and she would. Little did I know since she was sort of new to reading she would stumble through a book. So I got annoyed and frustrated and just started trying to read more at school so I could hurry up and read to myself. With that determination, I learned to read different words, sentences, and phrases in Pre-K. I've loved reading ever since.

message 14: by Brenda (new)

Brenda (funnychia57) My sister was two years older and would have to read her books out loud to someone so my mom had her read to me. I learned to sight read along with her and so I started readig when I was four years old. When I started school I could read all the books so they let me go to the next grads and borrow books to read. Stephen King's The Stand was a summer read for about ten years, then when the longer version came out I had to have it. My first book I bought for my Kindle was The Stand. If I couldn't read I would just die!

message 15: by David (new)

David Bell (davidefcbell) | 5 comments Very slowly. The backs of cornflake packets don't count, nor does 'Pow!' 'Whap' and 'Blam' captions on Batman TV shows. I started with Tintin and Asterix, then moved onto E Nesbit (5 Children and It etc.) My mum introduced me to Hornblower, which flipped me into 'proper' books, but it wasn't until Watership Down that the bug really kicked in. Now I regularly have 4 or 5 books on the go, and all the while writing my own. The saddest moment in recent writing? Death of Iain Banks. It's depressing to think I'll never be able to get inside his imagination again. Not unless I start reading them all over again. Again.

message 16: by Demi (new)

Demi (demirae) | 30 comments Twilight. I hated reading as a child and when I was 13 my friends were obsessed with twilight and I hated it cause I was sick of hearing about it. One day when I made a joke about it my friend shoved the book at me and told me to read it, I told her I don't read I the books but she made me. It took me two weeks(which is a very very slow for me now) and now for the 4 years there hasn't been a time where I haven't been reading a book. And my life is amazing :)

message 17: by Jess (new)

Jess (jessanstuff) | 3 comments I used to absolutely hate reading until around the age of 7. My school (at that time) would force kids to read books in order to improve our reading levels. I remember always picking picture books because they were so easy and no one stopped me. (I thought back then that I found a loop hole in the system haha). My teacher then found out what I was doing and tried to force me to read chapter books. My excuse to her was "...but there are too many words. How can I see pictures with words?". To this day I still remember what she told me, "Jesenia, I understand how easy It is for you to pick out picture books, but sometimes you have to do things you don't want to do in life like reading chapter books. Believe me, you will not regret reading. You will grow to love it."
She then gave me my first series, Magic Tree House. I loved reading ever since then.

message 19: by Rime (new)

Rime (curlyfries2710) All my sister used to do was reading. And I used to find that boring :$. So one day I asked her: "How can you read so much? Don't you ever get boread or something?", and the next day I was standing in a big big Library. I picked 2 books: Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Quel amour d'enfant !. I finished reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid in like 3 days, and I wanted more :D It's been 2 years now! Woohoo ♥

message 20: by Rodica (new)

Rodica Turcan Ever since I was small I knew I liked reading. I would read every magic tree house books and whatever small book I could find. later when I was like 13 I couldn't find any really good book so I gave up on reading and I told people I hated reading. Then I remember that my language arts teacher told me that she was reading city of bones and I should try reading it. At first I was like "Eh maybe next month." I really don't know why I started reading it but when I did I fell in love with it and couldn't stop reading after that.

message 21: by Sam (new)

Sam (sam222) I use to hate reading. When I was a sophomore in high school, we was in the library and I was bored so I went looking for something to do. I came across Vampire Mountain thought to myself this looks interesting, started reading it. When we was to leave I checked it out and loved it, I checked out a few more in the series. After I couldn't find any more I picked up Hunger Games like 3 days before all library book were to be returned for summer break so I never finished it or picked up another book for about a year. After I graduated I moved in with my grandmother, she reads all the time and that's when I started reading again and haven't stopped since.

message 22: by Gabriella (new)

Gabriella (gmargarita) I've been reading for as long as I can remember. My dad always read to me before I went to bed, and then I started reading books by myself when I was 5. What really got me hooked was the Harry Potter series, which I started reading when I was 6 years old.

message 23: by Mpiggy (new)

Mpiggy I never really read when I was young, because I just didn't care and never tried and always got C's in school for reading. I don't know how I suddenly picked up reading, but I got better by grade 4 or 5, but I still never read for fun. Eventually I started reading the Harry Potter series, but only got to book 4 when I suddenly stopped reading them. But it was after this that I really started to read.
I was maybe 12, and my sister and I got into a fight where we both ended up crying (don't judge! :P) but to settle us down my mom started to read us the fourth Harry Potter book which was on my bedside table. After that I decided to start the series over again, got really into them and then I began reading everything I could get my hands on. And that's how I started reading... I'm pretty sure!

Lade (ladet) for as long as I can remember, I've always loved to read. since from primary school, I was the girl with the books. I remember reading Enid Blyton. definitely my introduction to reading (except from picture books)

I used to love Enid Blyton when I was little too, the stories with the faraway tree used to be my favourite. Read those books so many times!

message 26: by Tinaliza (new)

Tinaliza My first love for books started when I was 4. My mother bought me Dr Suess collection that came with that back pack from TV. I was in love! I read them all, but to this day Oh the places you'll go and Oh the thinks you can think are my favorites. As a kid it was R.L. Stine, and the Box Car Children. Teen years were spent in comic books. Now I love it all, but I will always have a place in my heart for Goosebumps and Dr. Suess.

Marrah Mae (marrahmae) | 3 comments Encyclopedia Brown, the book that got me into reading way back decades ago. Without books i feel sad.. by not flipping the pages i feel weak. Yes it maybe crazy, but reading is my catharsis.

message 29: by Riya (new)

Riya When I was super young (like 5 or so) I would come home every day with stacks of picture books to read. I couldn't read yet though, so my grandpa would sit down and read them to me. Then one day I began to read them as well, and since then I've been super obsessed with reading!! :D

message 30: by Ella (new)

Ella My parents encouraged reading ever since we (my siblings and I) were young. I hated reading. I couldn't read out loud (I stuttered), I couldn't find anything interesting, and I just didn't like it. My brother was a real book worm and he tried to get me into Harry Potter. Didn't go so well at first. Then I had to read for school and I realized I would much rather read Harry Potter than Jurassic Park. I read, and I read, and I read. I found my love for romance books and just continue on with that.

message 31: by Riya (new)

Riya But Jurassic Park was a GREAT book!!!!! :P Anyways, that's great that you liek books now :)

message 32: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 97 comments Well I had started really reading in fourth grade, because my mom was a teacher.so I decided that I would read feathers, flawed dogs and many others that I can't remember. Then in fifth grade I looked at books I liked and bought them and they just sat there. In sixth grade I went crazy I read the whole hunger games series in 3 months went to see the movie and all was good. I also read all of the diary of a wimpy kid series. Seventh grade I read some books that did not interest me but there were some that did like the outside of a horse and the divergent series, matched series. Now a days I have to ready 30 min a day for school 6 days a week I have gotten into the Percy Jackson series and the city of bones series. So there u have it!

message 33: by Jessie (new)

Jessie | 239 comments When I was little, my parents began reading the Nancy Drew series aloud to me each night before I went to bed. I really enjoyed the plot twists and exciting scenes, causing me to decide at an early age that I loved to read. In fact, when I was younger, I always claimed that I wanted to be a reader when I grew up. To this day, I still enjoy reading and I can't see my love for books dwindling anytime in the near future!

message 34: by Rosie (new)

Rosie Donson (rosiedonson) | 414 comments When I was little my dad read me the Harry Potter series and although I probably didn't understand them then, I was left in utter awe. The first book I read to myself was 'The Suitcase Kid' by Jacqueline Wilson, recommended to me by my year two teacher, Carol Ward. I have loved reading for as long as I can remember but I have to thank my year nine English teacher, Angela Kelly for introducing me to Shakespeare. Thank you Miss Kelly for encouraging me to read older pieces of literature, I owe everything to you.

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

My mom and older brother were the ones who got me hooked on reading. When I was little although I don't remember this while my mom was cooking dinner she would have my brother read to me and he just about anything! Before I would go to bed at night my mom would then read to me The Loin, The Witch and the Wardrobe. It became one of my favorite books. When I got into school and was able to read on my own english and literature class was always my favorite subject. As a college student I still read for school but as away to relax

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)

Both of my parents worked full-time jobs, so when I felt adventurous there was no one to stop me. Whether it was the time I almost started a fire in the kitchen while making pancakes, traveling across town on my bike to visit my sister where she babysat, or climbing a tree I was told not to and inevitably breaking my leg as a result. I did all of these things before I was 8-years-old. Which means I had a knack for staying busy and into trouble.

Then summer came around and I was asked if I wanted to stay with my Aunt for a few weeks. She is the absolute kindness person I know so I naturally accepted. While I was there she took me to my Uncle's law firm (hes's a lawyer) and gave me the job of shredding documents. I did this for about an hour at which point she asked if I wanted to continue shredding papers or read a book she had bought for me. I chose the book, which was 'The Hobbit' and discovered an interesting new world. At this point in my life I had honestly thought books were just filled with mindlessly boring facts. I had no idea something like this existed. Needless to say, I devoured the entire book in two days. From that point on I looked at reading and learning a whole new way.

message 37: by Celia (new)

Celia | 29 comments I was about 4 years old or so, and I began reading all the signs, ads, etc, while I walked with my parents through the streets. All the while I felt really proud, like I was the one and only person in the whole world who knew how to understand all those symbols that, in the correct order, made words. It isn't weird, therefore, that when I discovered the existence of books I became absolutely crazy about them. In fact, way before I could even read two consecutive words I had already learnt Pinocchio's book just by having heard my parents reading it to me at night, so great was my love for stories.
The absolute passion I felt for books just increased as I read, and by the time I was ten I found myself reading War and Peace in my bed, late at night.
I got a lot of nasty comments at school, since nowadays reading doesn't seem to be considered a good hobby, and yeah, I admit to being a total nerd, but honestly, I'm proud of it.

Amy C. | 23 comments One of the first things my mom ever gave me as a baby was a Little Golden Book. I learned to read very early in life by watching Sesame Street & The Electric Company. I've always had a thirst for reading that seems to never be quenched.

message 39: by Amanda (last edited Feb 22, 2015 03:58PM) (new)

Amanda (amanda_mbe) I've been reading basically since the moment I started breathing. When I could sit up, one of my favorite things to do was "read" picture books. And when I finally learned to read words, I flew through as many books as possible. Since then, I haven't stopped. ;)

message 40: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Davis (sammie_antha1) Been reading ever since I can remember!

message 41: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer R. | 26 comments I've always read, Junie B Jones in 1st grade, Geranamole Stilton (not sure how to spell that) in second. However, I still wasn't a real reader. I read those books from time to time, just whenever I didn't have anything else to do. It wasn't until I moved that I got INTO reading. I didn't have a lot of friends so I slowly started to read and read more. Everyone started knowing me as the quiet girl who reads books. And then, what really pushed me into full blown Book Geek was reading The Hunger Games trilogy. I mean I was already reading constantly before that, but that's when I started getting passionate about reading, and more importantly WHAT I was reading. It's just that they were the first books to make me truly think and feel what the character was thinking and feeling. And so began the obsession.
