I just finished this book and think it's worth consideration. Marcus Sedgwick's Revolver was a Printz honor book, and in my opinion this one was better.

Midwinterblood is a connected collection of seven vignettes about a mysterious Scandinavian island. The first is in 2073, and each vignette takes us back in time, filling in bits of the story. It's a unique storytelling approach, and when I got to the end I wanted to start right back over at the beginning to read the story again. I don't want to say too much, because the discovery of the connected elements of each vignette was part of what was so delightful about this book.
