Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments 10.9 Design your own task! Write a task for yourself! If you repeat this task (can be used 3 times total), you must use the same task each time. Cannot be used as a combo.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments You can post your task in this thread and we will recap them all in this post.

Anika's Task: Read the book chosen for my local book club.

Arow's Task: Read a book that has Paranormal as one of the genres on the book page.

Bea's Task: Go to Flashlight Worthy, browse around a bit, then choose a list and read one book from that list. (Repeats do not have to be from the same list.)

Camille's Task: Read a novel published in a summer month-June! July or August.

Christine's Task: Read any book by an author listed as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize other than the title which was nominated.

Coralie's task: Read a book originally written in Spanish OR set entirely in a Spanish speaking country.

Cory (Bigler)'s Task: Read a book that is related to its author's TED Talk.

D's Task: Extra Innings. Read a book by an author who has published more than nine books. The chosen book should not be one of the first nine published.

Deana's Task: Since June brings the start of summer...read a book where the main character has made a new start. For example, life-changing career move, or any MAJOR lifechange.

Don (the book guy)'s Task: Read a short story collection.

itpdx's Task: Read a book with a number in the title expressed in digits.

Jayme (the ghost reader)'s task: Read a book that has Fantasy as one of the genres on the book page.

Jenifer's task: Select a favorite book/author, go to the book's main Goodreads page and click the "Lists with this book" link. Select and read a book by a "new to me" author from one of these lists.

Joanna's Task: Read any book added to your Goodreads shelf in 2007.

Karen GHHS's task: Read a book by an author presenting at the 2013 American Library Association National Conference that I plan to attend at the end of June.

Katy's Task: Read a book that has Historical Fiction as one of the genres on the book page.

Kelly's Task: Read a book that has Dystopia as one of the genres on the book page.

Liz M's Task: Read a book from any edition of the 1001 list that was published in the 2000s.

Louise's Task: "Awesome alliteration": Read a book where the capitalized words in the title is an alliteration.

Mike's Task: Favorite Authors. Read a book by a favorite author - defined as an author whose books I have read at least three of at the date of the start of this challenge.

Paula's Task: Read a book from any edition of the 1001 list that was published in the 2000s.

Rebekah's task: Read a "group reads" from any of RWS's prior challenges.

Rosemary's Task: Read a novel in which the main character goes on a journey. Ideally, the book should comprise a single over-land journey taking place in one world (no sea, air, or space travel on this one).

Tanya's Task: Read a book that has Fantasy as one of the genres on the book page.

Tien's task: Read books set in Asia.

Tobey's task: Read a book that has Fantasy as one of the genres on the book page.

Rebekah (bekalynn) Will there be any group reads?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments No group reads. All the rewards earned in the Spring Challenge will be transferred to Fall.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2594 comments Do we have to choose our own task. Can we do a task someone else created?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Jayme(the ghost reader) wrote: "Do we have to choose our own task. Can we do a task someone else created?"

Yes you can choose any task - one you make up yourself, one that lost a poll in the past, one we've done before, or even one someone else is doing this time. But you'll need to tell us that it is the task *you* have selected for 10.9 for Summer 2013.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Rebekah wrote: "Will there be any group reads?"

I'll edit my response to this. You could choose as your task to read group reads from prior challenges - be sure to say which challenges, though.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2594 comments okay, my 10.9 task is Read a book that has Fantasy on its main page.

I am choosing this because I have many fantasy books unread on my TBR list.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Jayme(the ghost reader) wrote: "okay, my 10.9 task is Read a book that has Fantasy on its main page.

Do you mean it has Fantasy as one of the main genres on the right side? If that is what you mean (and I think it is), let's word it:

Read a book that has Fantasy as one of the genres on the book page.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2594 comments yes that's what I meant

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments You got it!

Ha-Ha Elizabeth, you read my mind! That was exactly what I was thinking! I always end up missing at least one each challenge that I wanted to read. Some I even went ahead and bought on Kindle.
So my DYOT is to read a "group reads" from any of RWS's prior challenges.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Rebekah wrote: "Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "Rebekah wrote: "Will there be any group reads?"

Would you mind if we limit this to the last 4 challenges? It's your task, and you don't have to, but all of those books are already in the database, and I won't have to look anything up. ;-)

message 15: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) Please, Elizabeth, don't hold me to that! I don't mean to make your life more difficult but they are all on our bookshelf page.

I've read quite a few of the books listed in the last year.
These are the ones I bought intending to read but didn't get to them and most would not qualify for the last 4 seasons.
The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet
Bless Me, Ultima
Titus Groan
A Game of Thrones
Night Soldiers
Daughter of the Forest
White Noise
Redemption in Indigo

message 16: by Jayme(theghostreader) (last edited May 31, 2013 11:56PM) (new)

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2594 comments A Game of Thrones? really? Rebekah, you could use Game of Throne for this season's square peg task.

message 17: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) Do we have a square peg task?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments No Square Peg - what you see is what you get. ;-)

message 19: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary | 4272 comments Game of Thrones fits 10.1 :)

message 20: by Rebekah (last edited Jun 01, 2013 09:36AM) (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) I didn't think we had one this time. It also fits 20.8 (i think) and 10.10
I thought I saw this book on the Stephen King's list but now I can't find it. Possibly 20.5 as well?

message 21: by Kathleen (itpdx) (new)

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) | 1720 comments The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet will fit the second "u" if that what is what is selected in the poll.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2594 comments I meant it fit the square peg for the spring challenge.

message 23: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) Oh. ButI had a hundred other books to fit that task! (smile) I don't know which ones I'll get to this time. A few of them are jumbo reads and may be one of the reasons I never got to them in the previous challenges. I'm hoping giving them their own task will at least help me get to one of them.

Rosemary wrote: "Game of Thrones fits 10.1 :)"

I just realized task 10.10 was for first or last name and this author has Richard for a middle name.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments I would prefer that the Richard be in the name he actually uses as an author, and, since his Richard is initials, so not really in the spirit of the task.

message 26: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) I understand. Does Lorna Doone: A Romance of Exmoor work? Goodreads has the author as R.D. Blackmore but my copy has his full name, Richard Doddridge Blackmore.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Rebekah wrote: "I understand. Does Lorna Doone: A Romance of Exmoor work? Goodreads has the author as R.D. Blackmore but my copy has his full name, Richard Doddridge Blackmore."

Not for 10.10. It's still his initials.

message 28: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) ok maybe I can put her somewhere else. I've been wanting to read this book ever since I first ate a Lorna Doone cookie many, many years ago. (smile)

I wish I could take credit for it but I "borrowed" it from another task maker on another challenge board. ;)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5271 comments I would like to do this one:

Read a book by an author presenting at the 2013 American Library Association National Conference that I plan to attend at the end of June.
(Khaled Hosseini, Nick Lake, Jaron Lanier, Patrick Ness and many others to choose from)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Where did you find the list of presenters? I couldn't find it on the site. (of course you can do this task, I was just interested.)

Here's the link- it's under the "scheduler" tab:

Yay! It might be possible for us (and by "us" I probably mean Elizabeth ;) ) to send you a list of books that were claimed for this task, if you need ideas.

Yes, I can do that if you'd like it Coralie. I haven't looked, but I think there was a nice variety, but you might already have an idea or two yourself. ;-)

A list would be great. I am always open to ideas.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Coralie wrote: "A list would be great. I am always open to ideas. "

Here you go!

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/c...

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments That list is only those books read directly for the task. I didn't think about books that might have used the tasks for combo. I'm headed out for a family dinner, but I'll take a look tomorrow and see if I can add to that list with the combo books. Stay tuned.

message 43: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 3094 comments I've tossed so many ideas up in the air the past week but I've finally decided *what a relief!*

Read books set in Asia

I've started Shantaram though haven't made a dent in it but have got A Suitable Boy which I was planning to read in July anyway PLUS I have The Rainbow Troops to read too. Well, I've got my 3 books lined up!

message 44: by Kathleen (itpdx) (new)

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) | 1720 comments I was disappointed that the task that included "read a book with the name of a real city in the title" didn't make it in the polls but I am also thinking of "read a book with a number in numerals in the title". I am going to have to sit down and figure which book(s) I really want to read this summer that don't have a place in the challenge and then design a task that covers it or them.

message 45: by Camille (new)

Camille I've decided on this task:

Read a novel published in a summer month-June! July or August.

It's in the spirit of our summer challenge.

I'm going to read Paradise Dogs: A Novel by Man Martin combos 20.6 & 20.10

message 46: by Paula (new)

Paula | 163 comments I would like to do a variation od Liz M's task and state "read a book from any edition of the 1001 list that was published before 1850." is that ok?

message 47: by Paula (new)

Paula | 163 comments Scratch my last comment. Since the Victorians group is already part of a task I'm covered. Can I simply use Liz's task?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Paula wrote: "Scratch my last comment. Since the Victorians group is already part of a task I'm covered. Can I simply use Liz's task?"

I'll put hers under your name, too! (Yes, it's a nice task!)

Read any book by a Pulitzer Prize winning author (except the Pulitzer Prize winner). Is that better?

This is a better, more complete list of books in our database that were published in Spanish. It doesn't include any of those books "set in a Spanish speaking country" that were published in a language other than Spanish.
