Bon (bonne) And now I'm done! What did you guys think of the book overall?

I thought the last half-ish was a bit more interesting than the first half-ish and I liked how Fforde worked the seemingly impossible. After having discovered this was the first in a series, I'm inclined to read the rest. It definitely seemed like the prelude to a series. I'm interested in learning more about this particular reality, since there seems to be a lot that can be fleshed out.

Now that Big Magic has happened and wizards are powerful again, I bet Kazam will be contracted for bigger and better rewiring projects!

Hm, I part answered this question in the other post. Whoops.

Ok, here's my thing. I still don't think the dragons are entirely sympathetic. I mean, they say they want to share with people, and Jennifer will be their person. But they ate people! That is an issue. :/ I mean seriously.

Also, I adored the quarkbeast. Adorable bundle of knives.

Bon (bonne) Oh I agree about the dragons. While reading it, I was like "oookay... so dragons=evil. But also... dragons=necessary based on all these vague hints." Perhaps, like humans, they used to do (mostly used to do) terrible deeds and have culturally evolved out of such things as eating people. They've been shut away for 400 years and no one's asked them their motivation or about themselves until Jennifer came along, right? Maybe they didn't realize humans were people and thought they were just animals! Like the poor, misunderstood quarkbeast. The good news is that the book following this one is called The Song of the Quarkbeast, so maybe we'll get more goat/dog creature time.

Also, am I remembering correctly that there were indications dragons were aliens? I hope (if I'm not remembering something that never happened) that Fforde expands on such craziness in the later books!

They MIGHT be misunderstood, and I certainly hope so. But the fact that right now they've got their own path in and out, but human's can't get in seems super sketchy. Maybe if there was a space that only humans could be, it would be a bit more balanced.
