Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) Post your August Finished books here and what category it fits.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) This thread was repurposed from an unused thread.

message 3: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Where do I find out what the challenge is all about. And why would you open a second thread for this.

Moderators of NBRC | 1212 comments Mod
Mary: HDLS and Vicky, if you would like me to delete Posts #2 onward in this thread to avoid confusion, please let us know.

message 5: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) You can find the August Pewter Blue mini-challenge under this folder of Pewter Blue threads. It's called the Not Quite An Octogon Challenge. When you are on this thread, if you click on the Pewter Blue link it will bring up all our threads in this group. There are a couple of mini-challenges going but the August one is the one we can possibly get bonus points for completing.

We created this thread for finished books only because it makes them easier to find. If people post as they finish in their own personal update threads or in the discussion threads they are easy to miss, especially if people get chatty in the thread and there's a lot of posts. So having a finished books only thread makes it easy to see them and place them in the right categories. Vicky or I, as team captains, have to submit which books were read by who and how they fit our challenge in order to get the points.

message 6: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) Lets leave the posts up for now and then I will probably ask them to be deleted once we get closer to the challenge start.

Roger that.

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Pewter Blues Not Quite An Octagon Challenge

Mods approved: minimum of 1 for categories 2-8 but no need to set a limit on them. Members do not have to read a book for each category, as long as the team adds at least 1 book for each category.

1: Spell-GO PEWTER BLUE (12)
2: Beach Reads: books we'd take to read on the beach.
3: 8th in a series, 8 words, 8 letters, published in August etc.,
4: Green covers for Peridot birth stone.
5: Books with Sun, Fire on cover or in title, red or orange cover.
6: Summer Fling: books under 300 pages
7: 19th Amendment: books by female authors in honor of women in the US getting the vote on August 18, 1920.
8: Water, Water Everywhere: books set near water, water in title, water on cover etc..,

Finished Titles and Dates

1. Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks by Nicholas Sparks
Finished 8/2 340 pages
Fits into category #2 or #8

Sarah | 135 comments Just finished The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman by Alice Hoffman.
There is only one category most appropriate - #7. This is not only a female author, but a tribute to women.

message 10: by Barbara (last edited Aug 03, 2013 10:45PM) (new)

Barbara (worthwhilereading) Just finished Triptych (Will Trent, #1) by Karin Slaughter
Could fit in female author or "T"

Or 8 in the title.

message 11: by Mary X (last edited Aug 01, 2013 08:36AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) Finished: Death of a Dreamer (Hamish Macbeth, #22) by M.C. Beaton

I put it under the short books category but it also works for female author, beach read & water.

FYI: if I don't place a book right away in the update thread, it's because I am deciding where I want to put it. Since we need a minimum of 1 book in each category, I'll be placing books in empty categories until there's at least 1 in each. I have a spreadsheet going for tracking.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 362 comments Zodiac Unmasked The Identity of America's Most Elusive Serial Killers Revealed by Robert Graysmith

Fits:

1: G or R (Robert Graysmith, author)
5: red cover (the picture here is not the same cover as mine but both appear to be red/orange-ish red. The book that shows up here has the same ISBN as mine, yet different covers for some reason)
8: Water: Killer was fond of killing people near lakes

Zodiac Unmasked The Identity of America's Most Elusive Serial Killers Revealed by Robert Graysmith is actually MY cover, but that is an ebook edition, which is not what I read. I read the mass market pb.

message 21: by Imke (new)

Imke (immie75) Finished The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman by Alice Hoffman fits #7 03 August 2013

message 22: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) I finished A Voyage Long and Strange Rediscovering the New World by Tony Horwitz .

#1: T(ony)
#4: Maybe? It's a Greenish-Blue, I can't decide if I would call it green though!
#8: The boat on the cover is in water, it's difficult to see but it's in the bottom left corner. I could make a case for it being set on the water. In so much as it has a setting, it takes place in the major settlements of early America which were mostly on the water.

message 23: by Sarah (last edited Aug 03, 2013 11:04AM) (new)

Sarah | 135 comments Finished The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman.

message 24: by Mary X (last edited Aug 03, 2013 03:59PM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) I think I'd like to just keep it to me & Vicky updating the spreadsheet. It might get confusing if people start adding their books. I already have to check here and then the less active players shelves.
eta: updated to here

message 27: by Baroness Blue (last edited Aug 04, 2013 05:17AM) (new)

Baroness Blue | 23 comments Nancy, you can view the spreadsheet in This Message. It's the link that's there.

Mary said she set up permissions to allow anyone with the link to view it so I don't think viewing it is a problem. In fact, I believe you've already seen it? You made a comment about it in post #55 on the page I just linked.

Also, Mary -- thanks for letting me look at your spreadsheet for inspiration. I like your format much better than the one I had originally started to use. Yours was much simpler. I can't ever seem to do the simple way until someone else does it and I think, "Duh...". I make things too complicated for myself.

message 28: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) Oh yeah I don't care if anyone wants to look at it.

Here's the link again.

message 31: by Vicky (last edited Aug 04, 2013 09:13AM) (new)

Vicky (librovert) Nancy wrote: "Yes, I now realize that Mary did set up a link for all to see even before I asked this question so now I am wondering why she said she only wanted Vicky and herself to have access (in message #25)..."

I think she just misunderstood your post. There's nothing wrong with everyone being able to look at it!

Finished Ice Land by Betsy Tobin last night, fits:

#1 B, T
#2 Yes
#3 Maybe? Are we using original publication or publication of the book? It was originally published in February of 2008 but my copy was published in August 2009.
#7 Yes

message 32: by Mary X (last edited Aug 05, 2013 04:55AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) I thought I was spelling out this clearly. I also came back and said that I don't mind anyone looking at the spreadsheet. I posted the spreadsheet earlier so anyone could have looked at it before you even asked.

ETA: Nancy is staying in the challenge.

message 33: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) Just a reminder that this thread was created to just list the finished books for the August challenge. It's time consuming to do all the tracking and it's much easier for me when there's a separate thread that just lists books.
