Natalie Passmore | 68 comments I read classics more as a kid. I liked all the childrens classics but not so much the grown up ones.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is quite good.

Would you consider Lord of the Flies to be a classic? I liked that one. Not really into the English aristocrat type classics.

Oh, and my most fave book is…*drum rolls* The Scarlet Pimpernel!!!! Hee hee! I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!

Haven't read that book yet....though have heard LOT about it....but I was never much of a fan of classics...

message 10: by Anoop (new)

Anoop Pai B (anooppai) Quite recently, i finished Three Musketeers... Boy, it was a fun filled read:) however, i loathed To Kill a Mockingbird and Rebecca was an okay read!!!

message 11: by Anoop (new)

Anoop Pai B (anooppai) Same goes with Father Sergius and The Big Sleep .. Both were an okayish book....

message 12: by Holly (new)

Holly (goldikova) I enjoyed most of the classic books I have read. Henry James, Washington Irving and Edith Wharton are among my favorite writers. "The Good Earth" by Pearl Buck, "The Great Gatsby" and Steinbeck's "East of Eden" are in my personal top ten all time favorites from all genres.

Hemingway is another story entirely. I don't enjoy reading his writing.....just can't do it; and I dislike him as a person.

Loathed To Kill A Mockingbird!! Why.........??Though I read it long back, I don't remember much....but I had loved it!

message 14: by Anoop (new)

Anoop Pai B (anooppai) Well Ruchi, major part of the book was abt the life of that little girl, and very little about the case. While the court part was good, rest all were redundant!!
or so i felt;)

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

Mine:

To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Valley Of The Dolls by Jaquelin Susann
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens
The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand
The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger
Mommie Dearest by Christine Crawford

message 19: by Som (new)

To Kill A Mockingbird was so bad that it made me wonder how it got teh Pulitzer. It took me such a long time to get into the story.

Even though I like classics I feel Austen's Emma and Sense & Sensibility is not the praise.

I hated Emma actually....and didn't like Sense and Sensibility either.

message 23: by Aishee (new)

Aishee Among Austen's books, Pride and Prejudice and Northanger Abbey are the best.

message 24: by A, Crazy. (new)

A H | 7672 comments Mod
I haven't read Northanger Abbey...but Pride and Prejudice is really a classic!:)

message 25: by IShita (new)

IShita | 1528 comments Wuthering Heights is my personal all time favorite. It was dark but awesome. I hated but loved Heathcliff. I kind of feel sad for him. He was pathetic !
I quite liked Emma, actually. Her naïveté was what made Emma sucha great and humorous read.

And I hate Tess of D'urbervilles . It was like all that was going in the book was whining ! 'He left me so I can't look pretty'. It was very irritating.

I loved Wuthering Heights too!! It is one of my favorite classics...:)

message 27: by IShita (new)

IShita | 1528 comments Yeah :)

message 28: by Aishee (new)

Aishee Every time I read Wuthering Heights,I start crying. I both hate and love Catherine and Heath's doomed love story.

message 29: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen (kgiffin123) My favorite classics are Persuasion and Jane eyre. I love wuthering heights too, but it's so sad! :'(

★☆sodalemongingerpop96☆★ Read wuthering Heights myself!!So ark and tragic but it was awesome!!<3<3<3

message 31: by IShita (new)

IShita | 1528 comments I know.. But I think it's the sadness that gives it that touch !
I feel with this particular book- Wuthering Heights- it's the kinda book you either love. Or you hate it. There's no in between !

message 32: by IShita (new)

IShita | 1528 comments Well, everyone has their preferences ! Maybe you read the wrong classics or maybe you simply don't like it. That's your choice :)

message 33: by IShita (new)

IShita | 1528 comments Esh ! Why would you read that ?
I love classics but that one, I hated ! I cannot leave a book unfinished so I finished it but it took me ages !! It sucked!

Maybe you can give the genre another chance and read the right ones now ? :)

message 34: by Ipshita (new)

Ipshita (miss_romanceaholic) | 2700 comments Mod
I started reading classics with Defoe's 'Robinson Crusoe' which is really good. Then went on to Twain's Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. I didn't like Tom Sawyer much. I read A Tale of Two Cities after that which is a gem. I read Oliver Twist, David Copperfield and Great Expectations, before accidentally crossing path with Pride and Prejudice at a book fair, and the rest is history or in this case, classics :)

Michael wrote: "I seriously doubt I will ever read a classic again.."

There are some pretty good classics out there...maybe you could try out a good one for a change.

message 36: by IShita (new)

IShita | 1528 comments Yes, A Tale Of Two Cities is indeed a gem. So is Dickens A Christmas Carol.
I have DC on my shelf, I'm gonna start it next month !

Micheal, it's your choice but seriously. Maybe you should give it another try. I understand why you hate the genre. Hell, I would've hated it if I read The Good Earth first ! God !
There are other some really good ones, too :)

message 37: by IShita (new)

IShita | 1528 comments Ah, that thing about the new books is true ! They suck. Poor story, poor writing ! Barely read them.

message 38: by Purvika (new)

Purvika (violetstygian) | 3067 comments Classics have their own charisma! The way it is narrated and the language used is astonishing. My personal favourite is Wuthering Heights and Pride and prejudice. I don't think current book heroes can ever compare to Mr. DARCY :P.

Ipshita (miss_romanceaholic) | 2700 comments Mod
I haven't read A Christmas Carol yet. I've been procrastinating on it for years now. But I do know the outline of the story.

message 40: by IShita (new)

IShita | 1528 comments I am an anti-fantasy person here. It's like, universally known within the group :P
And I'm not a fan of new books either !

Ipshi- yeah, I read it ages ago ! I'm soon gonna do a re-read ! I forgot most of the book. Wanna BR ?

message 41: by Ipshita (new)

Ipshita (miss_romanceaholic) | 2700 comments Mod
Sure, Ishu! But can we do it after August? My exams, you know -_-"

message 42: by IShita (new)

IShita | 1528 comments Ipshi- sure ! I'm swamped with new books as it is to do a re-read anytime soon. We'll do it whenever you can :)

Micheal- wow. I cannot stand fantasy. I never understood how people could read such crap they know is super-ridiculous and far from reality ? O.o
Anyway, I'm surrounded by fantasy crazy people already. What great difference would another one make ?
Lol :D

message 43: by Ipshita (new)

Ipshita (miss_romanceaholic) | 2700 comments Mod
I'm not exactly a fantasy fanatic, but I do read them. *tries to pacify Michael*

message 44: by IShita (new)

IShita | 1528 comments I didn't mean they don't have problems or that they're insane if that's where u're going with this !
I was kidding, sorry !

message 45: by IShita (new)

IShita | 1528 comments No. I meant they're stupid to believe it. I'm not saying everyone who reads fantasy believes it but some does !
And what I mean is that I cannot understand how people can waste so much time reading something that is absolutely and totally superfluous ! I said nothing about believing it or not.
That's a touchy topic here. By now, I know better than to do that :P

message 46: by Purvika (new)

Purvika (violetstygian) | 3067 comments Wow this is one heated convo...

message 47: by Purvika (new)

Purvika (violetstygian) | 3067 comments Oh I have no interest in throwing myself in lion's den...
p.s I love fantasy as well :D

message 48: by IShita (new)

IShita | 1528 comments Okay.. Everyone has their preferences, I'm not saying anything :P

And well, I guess we're all kind of nerds here. But the cool ones *shrug*

Fantasy is a good outlet. It's really good to let loose and go to a world where anything is possible. Even drool worthy vampires and not-so-extinct vampires or some super cool witches ! I cannot read them but it's not like I don't like watching them ! They crack me up. They're fun to watch, in fact.

message 49: by Srividya (new)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) @everyone - just to remind you this thread is about which classics you like or whether they deserve the praise or not.. Lets ask Ruchi to make another thread for a Fantasy debate shall we??

message 50: by Purvika (new)

Purvika (violetstygian) | 3067 comments Na na...I am just a curious observer.... doesn't want to indulge myself in something that I did not start :p

But yeah I read fantasy just for mere enjoyment. XD
