Sindy I absolutely adore Arya and Tyrion. they are funny and strong for people of their size. Absolutely love them.

message 2: by Gianluca (last edited Jul 11, 2013 07:01AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gianluca Tyrion because of his intellect and wit, and because I love the contrast between his personality and his appearance.
Arya because she's strong-willed and resourceful. Her rebellious nature is always amusing, and I really like how her character evolves throughout the series.
Jon because he's a generally likable and balanced character - smart, skilled and honorable - and because he's at the center of one of the most interesting storylines.
Bran because of all the foreshadowing in his chapters.
Hot Pie because Hot Pie.

Nermin Rhaegar Targaryen.

Nick Dany because she has made the biggest and most impressive transformation throughout the series thus far. She is stern but fair, and aggressive yet kind. I know a few of her chapters are boring, and many readers grow tired of her plot. However, she is still my absolute favorite character and I think she will be one of the most important characters in the coming books.

Tied for my second favorite are Arya and Jon for obvious reasons.

Mitchell van den Akker Jaime Lannister. I like the redemption arc he's going on and I absolutely love the dry wit he uses to deal with people.(much like Tyrion). The exchange with Qyburn, specifically.

Also the fact that he saved the entire city of King's Landing, but wouldn't tell Ned because he's honorable in his own way.

Sindy Is it just me or did George really light up the fire on the whole

"the winter is coming and as those who live on the other side of the wall know scary things walk in the darkness of winter."

....AND THEN THE FIRE JUST VANISHED... what was the purpose? I was expecting him to say the white walkers actually tried to go through the wall or SOMETHING.
But hey, I'm only on the 4th book so maybe its still going to happen?

Gianluca Sindy wrote: "Is it just me or did George really light up the fire on the whole

What do you mean? The White Walkers are a constant threat since the first book, and we see plenty of them after the second book's ending. No one at The Wall has any doubt that they exist, and they are doing everything they can to warn the rest of the Seven Kingdoms. In fact, the White Walkers are the only absolute enemy in the series. All the other wars are nothing compared to the coming Winter, and only The Night's Watch seems to realize this. And that's the most exciting thing in the series, in my opinion. Kings and Queens are wasting thousands of men against each other, while the real enemy is waiting just beyond The Wall, growing stronger with every death.

As for: I was expecting him to say the white walkers actually tried to go through the wall or SOMETHING.
According to myth, there are old spells woven into The Wall to keep magical creatures (like the White Walkers) out. But I believe they'll eventually break through, and I think I know how.

Amoeba So hard to choose...here are a few.

I love Dani, even though she can be frustrating at times, I like that she's not perfect because she's what, 14? I mean she's doing pretty well.

I like Bran and the mysticism that comes with his character. It's fascinating to really see the old religion come to life with his story line. Plus, I just like him.

Also, I've really, really enjoyed Samwell's chapters. Talk about huge character growth, but he's still Sam. It's not this ridiculous 180, it's a true change.

Brienne is also a favorite, as well as Tyrion. I think that both of them want to believe in the best in people but have had such adversity it's hard to.

Also, am I the only one who is super interested in Cold Hands? Like seriously. I want to know what's going on with that...I want to know more about what's beyond the wall!

message 10: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Marae Sansa is my favorite and it makes me sad that a lot of people hate her. The series is just full of 'strong' characters and it's refreshing to see one with a different kind of strength. Her challenge is to survive in a place where everyone is her enemy. I've heard people say horrible things about her but no one realizes that if every female character was an Arya then Arya wouldn't be as interesting and special. >.<

Other than her I enjoy Jaime for the reasons Mitchell described: the redemption arc and such. Also Tyrion, obviously. :P Brienne is also one of my favorites.

Marcus Vinicius Nascimento Jon Snow, maybe because he's going against everybody's thoughts about him (about the fact that he's nothing more than a bastard son from a traitor)

message 12: by Hven (new) - rated it 4 stars

Hven Tyrion Lannister, of course, for his shrewdness and wit. And Jaime, poor Jaime, he's so misunderstood!

Then, Varys and Petyr Baelish for their cunning schemes. Now, these are the players who know the rules and how to truly play the game of thrones!

message 13: by Ben (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ben Diaz While I like Tyrion's wittiness, gonna say my favorite is the Hound. Reminds me a grouchy old Marine, like many I've had the pleasure of working with.

Also like Davos because of his determination and moral character.

Honestly can't stand reading the Dany chapters. I think I stand alone on this.

message 14: by Annemarie (new) - added it

Annemarie Donahue Peter Balish.. I know, I know. I have no idea why but I absolutely love this guy.
I also like The Spider.

message 15: by Ross (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ross Drew Everyone but those killed and those introduced in #4 I love. The death of bloody Katlyn Stark, finally, is the best thing to happen yet. The worst? Her coming back from the frikking dead.

Stepheny I love Tyrion because I think he is one of the most developed characters in the series. He has faced adversity literally since the moment he was born. He has tried for so long to win his father's affections yet never really holding it against his father for not loving him. He loves Cersei and Jaime regardless of their relationship and feelings towards him... He actaully tried to be kind to Sansa who has been through Hell and back instead of adding more torture to the poor girl. I think he is one of the best written characters I have come across in a long time.

I also love Jon Snow. Another one who has had to face adversity and outright hate from Lady Catelyn. Newsflash- it isn't HIS fault he was born a bastard! I think he is a typical person in the sense that he tries to do right by everyone and remain true to himself as well. I also love him for befriending Samwell(love Sam the Slayer!).

Dany is great. Plain and simple- who doesn't love the Mother of Dragons?? :)

Last but not least, I love Sansa. I didn't at first. I really resented her for lying to Robert in the first book and selling her sister short. With everything that has come to be, I can't help but feel for the poor girl. She has had it the worst I think out of any of them. That poor girl. She means well and I think she has always just tried to do what she thinks she is SUPPOSED to do... poor little bird..

Oh, and there are times that I am 100% behind Jaime Lannister and then I go- oh yeah, you're madly in love with your sister and pushed Bran out a window... then I think, aww, but look at him jesting with Brienne... then him with Cersei... I go back and forth, but he is becoming a very intriguing character to say the least!

Wayne Elsner Enjoyed the first three books and the show. Favorites are Tyrion and Arya. They came out as favorites first in the book but the TV series didn't disappoint and with Tyrion's wit and sarcasm and Arya's determination they seem to win out for me. Always rushed through the Sansa chapters.

Robert Jenson Oh, without a doubt Tyrion and Arya. Tyrion because he has some of the best lines, and also his character illustrated the power of Martin's writing to me. And Arya - how can you not love her? Out of all the characters, if she dies - we riot!

Andres I enjoy reading Jaime chapters, from my point of view he's one if not the most human character in the books so far.

No matter what you do, you're forsaking one vow or the other...

message 20: by Francisco (new)

Francisco Until his death, clearly Ned Stark. Mostly because of his personality. He was a righteous, honourable man, and besides that, a great warrior and a true war leader. But he was pushed into the gaming table, and when you can't play the game and you're standing in the gaming table.. you can end up like Eddard, of House Stark did.

But soon another character made something awake inside me. Precisely! Dragons. Daenerys Stormborn, of House Targaryen, Mother of Dragons and rightful heir to the Iron Throne became a favourite. I love dragons. And since they were born, reading Dany's chapters are the parts that I like the most.

Besides them I grew some love on Arya. When the story is seen from her point of view, everything gets really wild, pure, simple. Her journey is really passionate, and I believe that she will grow to do some cool things.

And finally, you gotta love Jaime's growth. Since his hand was cut off, he learned a few things about being a human being.

Dieggo Libardi My favorite character is Arya because she's very brave, smart and have honor like her father. I like her since first book, but now is awesome to read her story. Good luck for Arya.

Baelor Daenerys, Varys, and Littlefinger. Margaery also.

Quaithe is my favorite minor character.

message 24: by Gay (new) - rated it 4 stars

Gay Arya Stark!!!!!! Brave and smart little girl...

Charbeli Ramos Tyrion, he's so fucking smart!

Isaac There are so many well-written characters, it's hard to choose!

Jaime Lannister. Yeah, I get the redemption road he's walking, but I can't forgive him for "The things I do for love...", you know? He tried to kill Bran and ended up handicapping him. I do admire him as a character, as a reader, and I understand the king slaying thing now. For me it’s actually ok, you know, from his POV, but I can't (or can't YET) really like him.

Tywin Lannister is (view spoiler) the most badass person in Westeros. He's cruel, yes, if I lived in Westeros I'd probably want to kill him, but again, I admire him as a character.

The best thing about Stannis is his belief that he has a duty, and most accomplish it. He tries to be just.

I like Varys and Baelish as characters, not as persons, for they are probably the best 'players' out there. But I don't like them as people. For someone who haven't read the 4th and 5th books, it is hard to know where Varys’ loyalty is. After finishing the 5th book, I think he's somewhat loyal. Hint: the conversation Arya hears in GoT.

Talking about Arya, she is one of my favorites. Her rebel attitude is inspiring. Not to be rebel just because, but to fight the future people build for you and then build your own. She's not a bird, she's a water dancer... among other things... I really hope one day she’ll be this absurdly strong woman and come back kicking.

And I do like Bran. I think there's something really awesome in his horizon. Unlike many people, I like his quest, his adventure, his growth.

I like Tyrion for the same reason everyone does: he's smart, he's witty, his irony moments are awesome, but mainly: even though everyone despises him for being a dwarf, he doesn't give in. He doesn't give people the satisfaction. He accepts that, says 'f*** it' and play the 'game' like a pro.

Dany is my second favorite. She got a place in my heart in the moment she decided to go on after Mirri destroyed everything she had. I was really sad for her, but she got over it and moved on. She decided to be strong, and not give up. From the moment on, she was a dragon. And yet she is merciful, she's benevolent, she's not stupid. And although she's still young, she keeps growing stronger, as a person, as a queen, as a player. Don't know if she'd be a good choice for the iron throne in the future, don't know if she'll get crazy like her father (please, George, no) but, right now, I'd definitely vote for her.

And my personal favorite: Jon Snow. He's intelligent, he is skilled, he has his father's honor (not discussion theories here). He understands the danger he has to face, and he will try to save the Seven Kingdoms in any way he can. He has a strong sense of justice, he stands up to the challenges, and of course, he has Ghost. You can’t see most of what I’m saying here in the third book, but wait for it.

Jacob My top spot is a tie between Jon and Jaime, just because their the only major players in the story who aren't power hungry. They are both great warriors - Jaime not-so-much anymore for obvious reasons - who act out of a sense of duty, and not personal gain.

Next is Stannis, because even though he's power hungry, he is loyal to those closest to him, and eventually puts aside his own ambitions to defend the realm.

Of course Dany is up there too. Yes she can be a little arrogant at times, but she's proving to be a more competent leader than just about anyone else in the series. And(unofficial spoiler) I'm confident that she's the young, beautiful queen who the maegi predicted to replace Cersei.

And I know I'm in the minority here, but I actually really enjoy Sansa and Bran's story lines. Sansa has a gentleness which helps add some texture to the mostly bleak atmosphere of the series, and I'm really anxious to see where Bran's abilities take him.

message 28: by Mark (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mark Likes I'll have to fall in with most of you. I just love Tyrion and Arya above all the other great characters. But let me add that a close second is Olenna Redwyne for her fantastic wit and wisdom. No wonder Margaery is so adept at manipulating everyone she meets with this woman behind her.

message 29: by Jim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jim Swike Dany, the Queen of Dragons, she has constantly had to keep re-inventing herself, and it is fun to watch a story that actually has someone raising dragons.

Cosima I like Arya and Dani equally because they're both tough and determined for young girls, or anyone for that matter. Tyrion because he's hilarious and despite the family he comes from he goes against the grain.

Susan (Ware Spoilers!) Theon is one of the most fascinating characters to me because of the drastic changes wrought upon him. He starts off handicapped by his unfortunate childhood (always an outsider) and has to deal with the lousy fate he seems destined to endure. A real trajedy. I also like Sansa for very different reasons, but also because of her (much more subtle) character development. Who doesn't love Tyrion and Arya!

message 32: by Ken (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ken One of my favorites has always been Jon Snow. I felt that he exhibited the sense of honor I admired in his father, without the spoiled pretentiousness of Rob. I'm drawn to characters with a strong sense of honor, I've found. I'm not saying there weren't times when perhaps Jon thought things should just go his way, such as when he first joined the Watch, but he seems to actually grow, unlike many other characters.

James Westhoff Faramir. For his ability to empathize with his enemy. And for this line: "War will make corpses of us all." I know it's the wrong series. I apologize.

Rachael Arya and Tyrion, mainly because I can relate to them, in some way. Arya because she is very headstrong, extremely determined and funny in her stubbornness. Plus, she copes with her situation, and adapts extremely well. Tyrion, on the other hand, is very witty, loves his books (as I do) and learns to cope with the endless remarks about his deformity. I guess I'd say I admire him.

Tiffany It is hard for me to choose between Arya and Tyrion. I love Tyrion's sense of humor. He is sarcastic and his sarcasm is often misunderstood or simply missed by many of the other characters. I can relate to that. I have the same sense of humor. I love Arya because she is clever and strong and she gets to be so many different people. Tyrion is who I relate to. Arya is who I want to be.

Haldea Jaime Lannister.

At the beginning he seemed ignorant and ambitious jerk, spoiled guy, deserved to be hated and feared.
He met Brianne and I saw that Kingslayer had reasons for his crime, explanations for his actions (childish though), but he was neglected and hated by almost everyone. Except Cercei, who seemed to be the only person Jaime loved.
No wonder Jaime was doing all he could not to lose his only supporter, second half, only one who needed him.
But Brienne... Brienne appeared when Jaime Lannister was lost and defeated, she became tough hand for spoiled lad, appeared to be more stubborn than Jaime himself, who taught honor to Kingslayer.

So why I like Jaime Lannister most of all? Because he acknowledged that he was defeated by woman! he let all his old views about life be broken and learned pride and honor from woman; regretted mistakes of the past.

This was a metamorphosis of great degree, very difficult, painful and unexpected.

Cercei the Lioness or Brienne the beauty? Could you imagine Jaime Choosing the last one? :P

And here comes another point: Brienne betrays Kingslayer. He trusted her, looked up to her like example of honor, guide in life, basement for new Jaime... what will happen now? He doesn't look such a strong person for me.

Martyn Halm Ramsey Snow. I like him just a little better than Roose Bolton. Both are just misunderstood. I think more people should be flayed.

message 38: by E.W. (new) - rated it 5 stars

E.W. Pierce I'm as pro-Stark as it gets, but I gotta admit that Jamie is my favorite character, and it's not really close. Tyrion is great, Jon Snow and Arya too. But what GRRM has done with Jamie is astounding.

Vidya Definitely Jon, Tyrion and Arya. I love the perspective of Jon as he travels from the comforts of Winterfell onward to the wall and beyond and his experiences of war. Similarly with Tyrion his pov, his calculation, intelligence and wit to mask it all. I absolutely love his character! And of course Arya is just a bamf who i feel is one of the most powerful Starks, still reading so interested to see what happens with them.

Judy Floyd I have always been drawn to John Snow. However I am intrigued by George R R Martin. He is one of the first to change up the main characters and to maim or have them killed. What a ride. Reading or listening to a story from the "Fire and Ice" series takes the reader into the daily activities of real time. What would happen more likely in a reality rather than the "white knight" theory. Never have I been more excited to get to the next book. I only guess but have no idea what will happen next to our old and new characters and how it will end.

Fabitha Oh Gods, that's hard.
If I have to choose just one, I'd say the only one that never, never lost my interest and love, the one I wonder much about: Arya.
She's so young and she's been through the loss of most of her family. She ended up completely alone, disguised like a boy and still she never gave up. Her travel is amazing and shows us more about the Free Cities, which is interesting. I want to say more but my English level doesn't allow it xD

Anyway, I kind of like Sansa too. She grows A LOT in the books, and I'm really worried about her D: poor thing, always in the worst possible hands!

And LOL, I noticed no one like Cersei xD

I am glad to see someone else who loves Sansa! I think Sansa is a highly undervalued character. The amount of torture that one girl withstands is just unbelievable. I remember what I was like when I was her age- there is not a chance I would have been able to survive it. She shows incredible courage and how she manages to stay so graceful is beyond me. I know that other characters go through a lot of physical things, but the emotional and mental torture Sansa gets put through is mind blowing to me. I think she is awesome. I will admit in the beginning I didn't care for her, but as the books progress she has proven to be just as brave as Arya(IMHO)

Cersei is a fascinating character but has no redeeming qualities as far as I am concerned. She is so self-absorbed even when she claims to be doing things for her children or the good of her family it is really just a means to her own ends. She is twisted and reading things from her POV is like entering a psych ward. LOL

I don't think Brienne betrays Jamie, I believe he goes with her of his own accord. I can't remember the exact quote, but I distinctly remember someone saying that Jaime rode off with her. I think he KNEW exactly where he was going. Brienne would certainly have told him the truth because anything less would have been dishonorable.

Todd Loyd Davos, Thoras, The Great John

Always preferred the atypical heroes, guys who won't get the girl or the credit, but fight with honor beside the heroes, think Little John, Friar Tuck, Dr. Watson, Hoss Cartwright.
