C.E. Martin (cemartin2) | 37 comments Can we get a Central and South American Myths category? I think their legends are sufficiently different from the (North American) Native American myths to warrant a separate category.

I also think there needs to be a Shapeshifter Mythology category, since Vampires, Ghosts and Witches have their own- or maybe combine all of these into Mythological Creatures and Cryptids... for example I recently learned of the were-hyena mythology from the middle east and africa... very different from the European and North American werewolf myths.

I had exactly the same thought! :-)

Also, a category for Australian/aboriginal myths. I'm quite interested to read more about those.

I was told by another member of a good site to read about original myths and tales

sacred-texts.com

I haven't checked it out yet, but I wanted to share anyways

Julie | 7 comments Where would Dragon Mythology fall in this Group? Just curious. I have read many Dragon books, but they are not necessarily specific to Asian Myths. Any thoughts?

message 10: by C.E. (new)

C.E. Martin (cemartin2) | 37 comments That's why I suggested a mythical creatures subgroup, for Dragons, Centaurs, Satyrs, etc. etc

Mina Khan (spicebites) | 8 comments Hmm I'd love a thread about Djinns/Jinn/Genies! These are part of Middle Eastern, South Asian and African mythologies.

Also, peeked in on the Asian Mythologies...it seems to be focusing on Japanese/Chinese book. Would it be okay to include mythologies from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and surrounding areas? Thanks!

I think Djinns/Jinn/Genies can be included on the mythical creatures thread here: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...
I've already posted some general info on them and would love for you to add to it or suggest books if you would like

And absolutely I would love to see more myths coming from other regions of Asia

message 17: by Jojobean (new)

Jojobean I noticed that there was no folder for Indian Mythology. I know a few good books such as the Tiger Saga by Colleen Houck that has a lot of Indian mythology in it.

C.E. Martin (cemartin2) | 37 comments I just noticed there's no General discussion subsection. Are we supposed to discuss general myth-related stuff in the Welcom subsection? I have topics I'd like to bring up that would apply to all subsections, and not just one region/area of mythology.

A "general" folder has been posted

message 26: by Gary (new)

Gary I noticed that Lars André listed American Gods under the Norse mythology section. That does seem like the most appropriate place for it given that Odin has such a prominent place in that book, but it makes me wonder if there shouldn't be a kind of "Urban Mythology" section (compare: "Urban Fantasy") or something like that for those books that focus on stories about the gods in a modern world.

Thoughts?

message 27: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Jackson (paperbackdiva) | 23 comments Love this group! We need a category for African mythology. Africa is the second-largest continent in the world with one billion inhabitants, more than 1,000 languages spoken, and a massive variety of ethnic religions and myths. Among them:
Earth goddess – the mother of life.
Huveane - the first man, the conniver
Kaang - the supreme god, the creator
Adu Ogyinae - another first man, leader
Biloko – evil dwarf-like beings
The Zambezi River God- dragon like creature
Kalunga – the underworld of the dead
Anansi – spider god, a trickster

Amazon has quite a few fantasy, sf books based on these myths and Goodreads has a base of readers who seek out these books.

Done :) There is now a folder and discussion threads
I hope you don't mind that I used your description and posted it in the General Info for African Mythology

I hope that you can help finding some books about it though... I can't seem to find any novels based on them, only non-fiction ones!

I , too, would be very interested to see what kind of fiction is out there in this category

message 32: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 13 comments I would like to suggest that thread titles like "General Info" be varied from one category to another, so I'll know whether I'm clicking "General Info - Celtic Mythology" (which I'm interested in) and not "General Info - Zombies" (which I'm not).
