Rothman grew up near Washington, D.C., and graduated from Princeton University. Before coming to The New Yorker, he was a doctoral candidate in the English department at Harvard, an instructor in public policy at the Harvard Kennedy School, and a columnist for the Ideas section of the Boston Globe.
