If you would like some company while reading a non-group book - suggest it here, and if you get any takers, start a discussion thread.

If anyone is interested in doing a Readalong of some Doris Lessing - I'm going to read The Grass is Singing in Feb. (I've seen some really good reviews)

message 3: by Tracey (new)

Tracey | 304 comments I have to admit that I was going to skip the monthly read for Jan-Feb and read the Casual Vacancy which has been sitting on my kindle for months now.

Let us know what you think of it :0)

I must list the readalongs that we have decided on but haven't set a date yet for.
We've got Dante - The Inferno
Marcus Aurelius Meditations
The Unbearable Lightness of Being Milan Kundera

I think Laurel was talking about March for Meditations - any suggestions for months for the other ones?

message 6: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) I will be reading Dante with the help of a good Italien friend in another group as well (I assume you need all the help you can get with Dante ;)) and we were contemplating to start in April. Group juggeling! ;) Would that be too close to meditations though? Probably. Anytime from April on would be fine by me though.

Angela | 738 comments I am so excited for all of these! :)

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

April sounds fine to me - Everyone else ok with that?

message 9: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2082 comments Any of the timings are fine with me, I'll go along with what's convenient for everyone. I've decided to get the Clive James translation of Dante although I cringe at the price, especially as I already have a copy on my shelves!

We can put the Meditations back a bit if you want - I haven't even got a copy yet anyways ;)
Am excited for Dante!

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok - sounds like April is a definite for Dante - Any time is fine for me for Meditations.

Jenny (jeoblivion) Hooray!

@Hilary - I was planning on treating myself to a copy of Divine Comedy as well - not sure which one to go for yet but it's bound to not be cheap cos I want a really good introduction and lots of notes to help me along!

message 14: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2082 comments @Laurel. The Clive James one has good reviews but they do mention that it doesn't have a lot of notes, supposedly because it doesn't need them! I'm not sure what to do myself - I just didn't enjoy reading the copy that I have.

message 15: by Tracey (new)

Tracey | 304 comments I'm following someone on twitter who is reading this and can ask which version she is reading.

message 16: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2082 comments That would be good Tracey. Are you tempted to join in?

message 17: by Tracey (new)

Tracey | 304 comments My twitter person tells me she's reading it in Italian! However, I did look up the Clive James version and surprise, surprise... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/bo...

message 18: by Tracey (new)

Tracey | 304 comments Just been reading about it on wiki and sounds really interesting, but sounds very loooonnggg too. So I might give it a miss.

message 19: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) I did a bit of research as well (though no way I will be reading this in English, which is a bit of a shame because quoting will obviously be harder) and I think the go-to translator for Dante is Clive James like Tracey said. Here's a good article from the New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/21/boo...

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

@ Tracey - we're only reading the 1st book - Inferno this year , Purgatory next year and we're not planning on reaching Heaven till 2016 :0)

message 21: by Angela (new)

Angela | 738 comments I've only read Inferno so I'll browse back along with you all and then hitch a ride the rest of the way up.

I've already been through Hell - I loved it ;)

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

@ Angela - Lol

@ Jenny - thanks for posting the article - it helped me choose my translations :0)

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok, so we have Plato's Republic at the moment and in April we're attempting Dante's Inferno, in May Angela and I are reading The Unbearable Lightness of Being and in June it's Richard III.
Are we still wanting to read Meditations?

message 24: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2082 comments I afraid I've struggled with Plato and haven't got very far at all. I'm definitely up for Meditations as when I've dipped in and out it's very interesting. I still haven't decided whether to get a new copy of Inferno that might be a better translation, but I'll join in anyway.

I'm defo still up for Meditations as well - shall we go July or is that too far away???

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

July is fine for me - but could go earlier If people wanted.

message 27: by Angela (new)

Angela | 738 comments July suits me :)

message 28: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2082 comments I. Fine for July

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)
