For example- I crossed off "meh" for reading a GR author, so I cannot include this because I did not cross it off due to a book I actually read that had the shelf listed. Now if I read a book and crossed it off because it was listed in the top shelves, I can cross off a shelf this round.
DO NOT CROSS OFF SHELVES FOR THE CURRENT ROUND (17).
Shelves that did not make the cut.

**I am also taking away currently-reading and to-read because these shelves are almost always a given.
***The above shelves will still be included in the official 400 shelves for Shelf-A-Thon 18 (with the exception of currently-reading and to-read).
****In order to make it easier for those with a spreadsheet, I will include the new shelves with an asterisk.

You write: i.e. to have read a book off the classics shelf, you must read a book that is found on the "classics" shelf within the first 3 pages.
The way you state it we would go to the "classics" shelf and then search for our title within the first 3 pages of that shelf.
Based on further explanations in the rules, I think you mean that the book has to have "classics" listed in the first 3 pages of shelves on that book's list of top shelves. (This is what I think we've been doing.)

Angela ... you're right ... the rules make perfect sense without the first statement.

Is the official list cast in stone ... or will you review/revise it on Nov 1 to reflect what the top shelves are on that date?

It was kinda nice to know that we'd automatically have at least 2 shelves that count ... but I also understand that these are status shelves like "read" (which never appears on the list of top shelves).

According to my list ...
For Shelf-a-thon 17 the shelf was "to-read-in-2013"
SO, is this a typo or is this a new shelf and the one with the word "in" has been deleted?

QUESTION .... since you have added 50 shelves there are no cross-offs EXCEPT for "to-read" and "currently-reading" which you removed.
So does everyone just get two extra shelves to cross-off, or are we not doing this at all this round?

Round 16 had to-read-2013 AND to-read-in-2013 but Round 17 it was just to-read-2013.

1)Message 2 in this thread has the cross-off lists for those who participated in last the last round. To read and currently reading will not give anyone extra shelves to cross off since they were removed due to being a given, not because the fell off the list of top shelves.
2)The book can be started before today, but must be finished within the dates of the challenge to cross off shelves.
3)The shelves in message 3 of this thread are final.
4)I decided to go with 3 pages because of the increase in shelves (from 350 to 400). Also, since most of the top shelves are within the first page, it may be easier to get some of the other ones. In order to not give everyone too much change, I will change it to the first 2 shelves. I want everyone who participates to have fun.

"books- i -read-in-2012" (13,669 books)
or
"books-read-in-2012" (54,433 books)
Which shelf is officially on the list?

Dawn wrote: "quick question..if i read a book that is 500-599 pages and is by a Goodreads author do I get both cross offs or just one?"
Both
Both

The "winner" is one who has either read off all 400 shelves noted on the official list or who has read the most off these 400 shelves by the end date, January 30th....
QUESTION re the deadline .... rule 11 states January 30th ... but top of thread says the game ends January 31st ....
Are we going to January 31 or ending a day early on Jan 30?

Start: November 1, 2013
*Any book that you finish after this date can be used for this challenge.
End: January 31, 2014
1. Here is how you find the page:
- Find the book you just read and click on it so you get to the book's main page page. For example: Click on the link:The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger.
- After you get to this page, look all the way to the right hand side and scroll down a little to find "Genres" and then a link to click on "See top shelves... click on it and you should get to this page (https://www.goodreads.com/work/shelve...) which is a list of the most popular shelves for Catcher in the Rye. Now you mark off the shelves you "touched" from our official list of Shelf-a-Thon 18 shelves.
2. A single book may be found on several shelves however we will only count the first 2 pages of top shelves for this book. For example, you may find a book that has 201+ pages of shelves (Catcher in the Rye), but only count the first two pages.
3. You don’t have to read off the shelves in any particular order.
4. The name of shelves must MATCH EXACTLY to the shelf you are trying to count. No deviations are acceptable (check the spelling off the official list below). For example one shelf reads: 2011-read and another 2011-reads or childrens or children-s.
5. It is highly likely to read a book that is found on a shelf you've already counted. I may read 10 books that include the shelf "books-i-own". Once I crossed it off, I do not count it as an additional shelf.
6. Reporting:
All we want you to report on the thread is the number of books you've read and the number of shelves these books are found on. Do not report titles because that will give your competitors a strategic edge. I will be creating a another thread where people can post questions on where to find a shelf. So if someone is looking specifically for economics, they can ask other players where they found that shelf. Some of us would like to keep this a secret, as it may give the competitors who are trying to get the most shelves more of an advantage.
For example:
52 shelves
2 books
You must track the titles read and the shelves on your own. You can come up with your own method of tracking. I personally print the list and highlight the shelves I have hit, but someone out there may have made a excel spreadsheet, which can be requested by other players via email.
7. HOW DO I GET RID OF SHELVES I CAN'T TOUCH??
If you read a book with a certain amount of pages, you can cross off a shelf you are finding difficult to hit. If you cross off a shelf and later hit it, you CANNOT change your original shelf. You must choose another shelf to cross off.
* If a book has 400-499 pages - Mark off 1 extra shelf of your choice
* If a book has 500-599 pages - Mark off 2 extra shelves of your choice
* If a book has 600-699 pages - Mark off 3 extra shelves of your choice
* For more than 700 pages - Mark off 4 extra shelves of your choice
Please include this in your reporting.
For example:
216 shelves
23 books
Book over 400 pages, crossed off so and so shelf.
8. At the end of the first and second month, the top three shelvers will be allowed to cross off 3 shelves. I will also randomly (names out of a hat) pick 3 people to cross off 2 shelves of their choice.
9. We will continue to celebrate GR authors, so if you read a book by a Goodreads author, you can eliminate one shelf. Again, this information should be included in your reporting. If a book is written by dual authors and both are Goodreads authors, only one is allowed for an extra shelf cross-off.
For example:
102 shelves
5 books
Book by a Goodreads author, crossed off so and so shelf.
10. So I read a book and had no new shelves!!!
I know this has happened to me plenty of times and it is disappointing to not have a single cross-off. This time around any book you read that is OVER 100 pages that did not touch a single shelf, you are allowed ONE cross-off extra.
11. Objective
The "winner" is one who has either read off all 400 shelves noted on the official list or who has read the most off these 400 shelves by the end date, January 31st.
*It is no longer necessary and optional to keep track of how many times you touch a shelf.
**Please do keep track of a shelf you crossed off that were extras. For example: this last round I crossed off "magic" due to a GR Author only to hit it later on with another book. There will be a purpose for this in Shelf-A-Thon 19.
***Shelves for the next round will be posted either later today or tomorrow/ and yes we have jumped to 400!!
****Cross offs from round 17 will be allowed for individuals who touched a shelf (no extras allowed) that is no longer on this rounds list.
If you have any questions, please ask here and either I or a seasoned player will respond to help you out.
