Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments You may have noticed the group name changed earlier today--we're starting to prep for 2014! This thread is to answer any questions about what's about to happen as the group transitions over.

First of all: we will not be deleting the group at the end of the year. Instead, we will change the group name, archive the 2013 stuff, and start anew. We will create new folders for 2014, and there will be new yearly challenges.

We will start posting the 2014 yearly challenges so that you'll have time to think about them and plan for next year. We will be posting these one at a time to give everyone a chance to see them.

November:
- Post 2014 themes
- Start posting yearly challenges

December:
- Create the new folder for personal challenges and member corners
- Post January challenges
- Post first quarter challenges

First week in January:
- Change group name
- Archive all 2013 threads

We hope you're as excited as we are! Let us know if you have any questions.

I love this name change thing. It helps to build excitement for the upcoming year as well as giving a fresh new feel to the whole group, appropriate for the coming year. I really can't wait for 2014. The challenges that are coming are awesome.

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments I can't wait to see the new challenges ahead.

Kaitlin (kait-k) | 537 comments You are so organized! That's awesome. Kara, I wish we worked together...the people at my company don't communicate half as well as you, and this is just for fun! :-)

message 5: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Haha, I'm ridiculous at work. You should be happy you don't work with me. But thank you.

message 6: by Lorelei (new)

Lorelei (goodreadscomlorelei_reads) | 393 comments Kara, and all the moderators, thank you for all the work you do to make this such a great group. I really enjoy reading more because of the fun challenges, group reads and the comments we share about our great passion. I too am looking forward to what is ahead.

message 7: by Alison (new)

Alison G. (agriff22) | 1188 comments kara thanks! i had an idea for banned book month, which i think is september or october. Can the group reads be one of those or the challenges?

message 8: by Alison (new)

Alison G. (agriff22) | 1188 comments a challenge or something during that month that has to do with banned books

message 9: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Not to spill too much too soon, Alison, but our September theme in 2014 will be Banned Books, so we will for sure have something about that.

message 10: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments If we have challenge suggestions for next year, is this where we should post them? If not, just move the following suggestion: a randomizer challenge. I have over 4k books on my tbr list and its nice to have something randomly pick my next book. Did a challenge like this for another book club and found a fabulous book hidden away on my list that I probably would never have gotten to read. We used a website that had a formula to determine which book to read on our list. Sorry if this is the wrong place!

message 11: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments I think that's a great idea, Megan! We may do that as a quarterly challenge--I think we've got all the yearly ones we need.

message 12: by Adriana (new)

Adriana | 3888 comments I've heard of something like that Megan! That sounds like a great idea (:

message 13: by Brian (new)

Brian (brianfinn) | 638 comments I love this idea of a randomizer challenger! There are some books on my TBR list I may never get to read, since I am definitely more prone to select certain books over others when choosing what to read next. It would be a shame to miss out on a wonderfully random'izered' pick!

message 14: by Karina (new)

Karina (karinargh) | 807 comments I like the randomizer challenge idea so much I'm toying with the idea of using random.org to select 3-4 books per month from my "owned, but unread"-shelf every month from now on. :p Ah, the unbearable freedom of choice!

How does the randomiser work? Do you add numbers of books or the book titles to find out which book to read next?

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 910 comments If you you click (edit) next to bookshelves in My Books than you can enable shelf sorting on whichever shelf you want to use. This will assign a number to each book (which you can change if you want). Then you can go to random.org and enter 1 as the min and however many on your tbr as max and generate a number. That's how I've done it for other challenges.

By the way I think that's a really good challenge idea. I know for a fact that I've got books on my tbr that'll probably get read last unless I am pushed to read them by a challenge.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 169 comments I like that randomizer challenge idea, too.

When do you anticipate that you will start posting the yearly challenges? I know we're not even that close to January for me to worry about them but I'm so curious, LOL!

Ashlee (Ajax) (whoisajax) | 125 comments am so excited to be adding this to my new years resolution and I love the Banned Book idea would be amazing to hear some of the books that have been banned in certain places.

message 20: by Julieschreiner (new)

Julieschreiner | 19 comments Another book club I am in does a Twins monthly thing like the Buddy read but instead of reading the same book the partner picks a book from your tbr books that he/she has read and rated greater than 3 stars that you are to read for that month. This could sb a possible addition??

message 21: by Ashlee (new)

Ashlee (Ajax) (whoisajax) | 125 comments Just printer my 'want to read' book list - this is going to set me up for the 2014 reading challenge :)

Adriana & Zara are our mods running the yearly challenges.

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments I can't wait!

message 26: by Sarah (new)

Sarah The yearly challenges are looking good! I'm going to hold of making any decisions on which ones to do yet but it's exciting. I particularly love the idea of the 2014 Reading Challengers Recommends List Challenge.

message 27: by Nidia (new)

Nidia (thatgirlreads) | 103 comments Can't wait to get started. I'm not quite going to make my challenges for this year but next year I'll do better. Onward and upward ;)

message 28: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments To the Mods,

The challenge ideas are fantastic for 2014. I am trying not to sign up for every one but they are all so interesting and fun. I am not in a hurry for 2013 to be gone but I am excited for a new year with all of you and some new amazing books.

message 29: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Thank you, Jodi! We had a lot of fun coming up with them.

message 30: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (blacjak) | 350 comments Okay, so if we want to set up 2014's challenge, do we put it in the folder marked "100+" or in this folder (2014 prep)?

message 31: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments 2014 prep, please. The categorized folders are for 2013 challenges. Once 2013 is over, we'll archive those and categorize the 2014 challenge.

message 33: by Jaclyn (new)

Jaclyn I'm looking forward to see what the January and 1st Quarter challenges are!...will these be posted soon?

message 34: by Colby (new)

Colby Dahlia | 54 comments Will there be the baby name challenge?

message 35: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Hi Colby, that particular challenge isn't one of the ones we'll be continuing for 2014. But don't worry! We tend to bring back old yearly challenges (a few of the 2014 ones are originally from 2012), so you'll likely see it again.

message 36: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (blacjak) | 350 comments I noticed some people are posting their 2014 challenges under the 2013 folders, I commented on one of them in the 100+ folder, but when I saw the second one, I figured I would make a suggestion: Could you add "2013" to the title of those challenges? It might help some people.

message 37: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments That's a good idea!

message 38: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 868 comments So how do you cut off books at the end of the year? For instance, if I start a book today in all likelihood it won't get finished until the New Year. Would one consider that a 2013 or 2014 read?

message 39: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Books count for the year they're finished in, not the year they're started in. You can start it now, but it counts for 2014 if you finish it in the New Year.

message 40: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 868 comments I always wondered. Thanks!
