message 9: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Laura wrote: "Category 1: I Am the Messenger by the truly awesome Markus Zusak"

I own that, but wasn't sure if it was a coming of age. I would certainly join a read of that!

message 10: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I don't think it's coming of age, but I nom'd it for Category 1, so it should be fine for that.

Perfect! I'm planning to read it anyhow for the challenge.

message 15: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 274 comments Category 2: Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer - which is a dystopian coming of age. :)

Oh Luann, I'd be sooo curious to see what you think of Messenger when you're done. You can read it as my bookpush if you want! Although you may get more points by reading it for another task.

Thanks! I have it slotted in at 30.1 since it won the Children's Book of the Year Award in Australia. Funny, though, the other book I already read for that task was one of your pushes as well - Anansi Boys which won an Alex award in 2006. :)

Becky, I was thining of nominating The Book Thief, glad you did. I liked it better than I Am The Messenger (though that was good too).

message 25: by Kristen (new)

Seems like Fiona might be another holdout...

You two should read it. It's my very, very, very favorite book!

message 29: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I haven't read it, either. I own The Messenger, but could certainly borrow Thief from the library.

message 30: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yes. Do. It's amazing!

message 31: by Jamie (new)

Jamie I've got The Book Thief on my list to read next month, as well.

message 32: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) A friend has given me a contact for Markus Zusak, and I'm going to try and see if he'll come online and chat with us. It sure would be nice if one of his books was our July group read!

It really doesn't matter which one. His books are gems.

And - he's coming out with a new one sometime soon! Hee hee!!!

message 33: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 390 comments Laura, it would be great if he came here, too. I didn't know he has another book coming out!

I read Book Thief a year or 2 ago, but if he came to chat with us I would def reread it just to be able to chat with him. I had borrowed it from the library and then after I read it, I ran right out and bought it, it's amazing!

message 46: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 342 comments I keep getting to the nominating too late. I'll have to be ready next month. There are, however, quite a few books I want to read on both lists. I have already started Paper Towns, just started today before logging onto here.

I really want to read that and the books Becky mentioned. I'm going to have to think about this! Tough poll!

message 49: by Pat (new)

Pat The Book Thief is on my son's high school summer reading list. I'm surprised that the usual dogs are not listed, and I'd be happy to read this book as he does. I'm eager to read The Absolutely True Diary too .... For my already reads: nothing matches A Tree Grows in Brooklyn for me, from the first time I read it in 1974 'til now. Thanks for all the great suggestions.

message 50: by Susan (new)

Susan (mrsfun) | 89 comments Yea! I nominated something that just might win this time... my July TBR list is huge! Good thing it's summer. (Better buy lots of sunscreen!)
