I've finished uni for the semester, but these holidays i'll be moving house and looking for new work, so fingers crossed that I have time on my hand. I have quite a few things I want to tackle!

I tried my hand at some creative writing during NanoWrimo and wrote some short stories. I'll be polishing them up and reading short stories from some great authors (Chekhov, Maupassant, Salinger, Hemingway, Joyce).

I'm halfway through Don Quixote and will finish it this month. It's been a blast.

A friend gave me The First Circle by Alexandr Solzhenitsyn for my birthday last week, so I want to go on a Russian kick and read things like Crime and Punishment, Darkness at Noon, and We.

I haven't heard of The First Circle but I will have to check it out!

Unfortunately, my reading has been lacking of late!

I need to get back to reading like if I was indulging in chocolate!

I want to start reading The Lotus Palace by Jeannie Lin first and also the monthly's read for December: 97 Orchard : An Edible History of Five Immigrant Families in One New York Tenement by and I hope to catch up on my year's goal. Although I think that would be impossible!

I can't believe the year is gone already!Jane Ziegelman

Arteau | 1 comments If I can get my hands on the original English version of Slaughterhouse-Five that's definitely on the top of my list.

Then I'd love to read the Millenium trilogy (I know, I know): The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo The Girl Who Played with Fire The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest

I am into historical fiction these days, so I am reading Uneasy Lies the Crown, a fiction novel based on the last Welsh Prince of Wales. Being of Welsh descent (among tons of other things!) and having loved the television series The White Queen and now Reign the book is good so far.

Sarah (kuckbaby) Arteau, those books feel very wintery to me, since they take place somewhere so cold, so good choice!

Megan, those are all on my list of one day!

I am going to be reading GHOSTBOUND - Call from the Other Side, which was written by a friend of mine, and The Hangman's Daughter which I received in my redditgifts secret santa already!

message 8: by Krista (new)

Krista Aoki (kristaaoki) I am really interested in reading the books Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead and The Botany of Desire: A Plant's-Eye View of the World over the holidays.

The ONLY thing I want to read during the holidays is Chris Hadfield's book. An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth: What Going to Space Taught Me About Ingenuity, Determination, and Being Prepared for Anything. Currently I'm reading Doppler which is...interesting...?

Hi everybody!! I hope all of you enjoyed your Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa if you celebrate....or just enjoyed a break from school.

Did anyone actually get through any of the books on your holiday reading list? I didn't get through Uneasy My Crown because of some medical issues, but did get a few pages read. I am still enjoying it though and just downloaded Doctor Sleep by Stephen King. I have soooo many books on my to read list that I may never get through them! But one (or maybe two! LOL) at a time!

Any ideas for a January book? Maybe The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt?

message 11: by House03 (new)

House03 | 26 comments Nope! The stuff for school was photocopied wrong so sometimes there's up to two words missing on the left. And I can't find a book with the story in it. Good thing I have to do a project that's worth a lot of my grade on it, right? (But seriously, if anyone knows a book with it in it or can find it somewhere on the Internet in English I would be overjoyed. It's "The Story of Nil" by Gabrielle Roy.)

And my parents did get me some books, but if I start reading them now, I'll never be able to concentrate on my classes enough to pass. Well, I'd probably pass Accounting and Creative Writing, but that's not the point.

It's holidays! I can't hold onto a book for long. I picked up some great Australian books from the markets so I've dropped the Russian kick: now i'm reading The Fatal Shore and A Secret Country.

Also, I got the biography of Steve Jobs for Christmas, so there's that too.

What about The Luminaries for the January book? I know r/bookclub will be selecting it for their January book, it won the Man Booker, getting rave reviews .etc. *The Goldfinch has been getting rave reviews as well but I was going to read The Secret History first. Can anyone recommend it?

I need need NEED to get Don Quixote this holiday season. It is my mission. I will get this book, find a guide to read with it, and master it so no reference to it will ever catch me unprepared again!

Don Quixote isnt a slog, its a really fun story that anyone can enjoy. You dont need a reader! The latest translation is edith grossman and its really easy to read, has helpful footnotes for some of the historical refences but doesnt weigh it down at all.
