I just read this article that indicated that the mangaka had planned a very traumatic ending to the series but due to the response to the series and the anime, he'll be changing the direction of the ending.

What do you suppose he originally intend to do? What do you think he will do now? What would you do?

Assuming that he'd planned to do something along the lines of Frank Darabont's The Mist with, yes, such traumatic ending, possibly he originally intended to extinguish human race?
Or maybe that, after so many struggles to defeat the Titans, in the end they surrender for unexpected too powerful (king) Titan, strengthen the walls and live in fear just as how it is in the beginning?

Well, he said that the story is inspired by his past experience as the victim of bullying, it can be that he initially wanted to show how his bullying ended (maybe some more realistic ending which doesn't sound like a victorious ending) or then he will now try to write a more hopeful optimistic ending.

I'm just afraid that the path he took now will go to a predictable stereotypical ending, especially after many unexpected turns which keep me interested in the series.
