I've given this idea a lot of thought as well. I feel that now that I'm 30 I should care more about non-fiction....doesn't seem to happen that way.

Lindsay (crowshollow) I used to think that way. Though I am not 30. All my friends in college were reading these deep intense books. some fiction some not. They would discuss how these books commented on todays society, and the human mind etc etc etc... And I would be sitting there too embarrassed to pull out my cozy mystery, or romance novel or teen book. quickly though I realised that I will just read what I want. lol. I do like to read some non fiction but I never force myself. But good on you for challenging yourself. That's what this is all about isn't it. Good luck!!!

Lyssa | 105 comments Hi Judy, I'm picky about my non-fiction as well. Luckily travel memoirs count and Mary Roach does a few (Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex, Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers, Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void) that are pretty easy and fun reads - snark just shows up unexpectedly. :)

That said, I'm normally a fiction reader myself... whatever works for you. Happy challenging!

Thanks for the recs, Lyssa. I always forget about travel memoirs for some reason, but I like the ones I've read. I'll definitely check those out.

It's not that I dislike nonfiction, it's more that I read to escape from the real world so reading about the real world sort of defeats the purpose. lol

We'll see how I do at the end of the year. My thought is that if I read at least 2 I will have done well. :)

OK so I am on the shady side of 40 and I have a hard time with non-fiction as well. It is just not quite as fun. I made a goal last year to read 1 nonfiction per quarter. That makes 4 a year. I have the same goal for this year. I figure, set it at a reachable pace and I won't care if I exceed it right?

I read 1 non-fiction that ended up being a favorite book of the year so I am feeling good about myself. Maybe I am finally a grown-up?

Lindsay (crowshollow) Do either of you read cook books? Those are non fiction. I never thought about that until just now. lol. I'll count those as my non fiction. That and the couple of almanacs I have going for the whole year.

message 12: by Jen (new)

Jen | 42 comments I love cookbooks, but the only one I've ever sat down and 'read' is the America's Test Kitchen "The Best Recipe", because it's full of fascinating extra info about how they modified recipes and why and what effects different combinations had on the food.

But I would totally count them as non-fiction. And household/entertaining books like Martha Stewart and Emily Post. Those absolutely count.

Judy (shellseeker) | 17 comments I don't read cookbooks so that won't work for me. Darn. lol

I'm curious, Nanci, what non-fiction book ended up being a favorite?

message 15: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 62 comments The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
I was really interested in the story and the lives of these young men.
