Hi Everyone,

I'd like to start a poll for our January read soon, so any of you have inklings about what you would like to read in the first month of the year, give a shout out here and I will add any multiple mentions to the poll.

The Human Comedy: Selected Stories , a collection of stories by Honoré de Balzac, will be releasing on January 14th. Also, a lot of people seem to have a hankering to read Simone Schwarz-Bart's novel The Bridge of Beyond, though it has never been voted into the book club.

As for older titles, I have been wanting to read Alan Garner's Red Shift and Stefan Zweig's Beware of Pity.

Other suggestions? Go!

-Abigail

Seana | 432 comments I'll mention Stoner again, as it was just short a vote of tying with Speedboat when we voted in August. I wasn't the one to recommend it then, but I have heard many good things about it over time.

Jonathan | 232 comments The Balzac collection looks interesting. I'd like to mention Fancies and Goodnights, which looks fascinating and one that appeared on last month's list The Family Mashber which is long but looks like a good read.

Declan | 89 comments 'The Family Mashber' was the title I suggested last time, so I'll second Jonathan's mention of that book, but I would like to finally read 'Stoner' too because it has been getting so much attention throughout this year: http://www.theguardian.com/books/2013... .

Peter Stoner is an excellent realist novel, rather old-fashioned and consequently overlooked when it was first published. I have already read it, however, so here are a couple of others for consideration: Warlock by Oakley Hall - not a fantasy as the title may suggest (Warlock is the name of a town), but a reworking of the myths of the American west - and The Slynx by Tatyana Tolstaya, which has previously been voted into second place and still sounds intriguing.

What a nice variety of suggestions we have here. I'll make a poll later today with all the books you guys have suggested so far. I'll cut Beware of Pity and Bridge of Beyond, unless someone chimes in at the last minute.
