Amy H. Sturgis (amyhsturgis) | 24 comments What are some of the key quotes/passages from the books that best reflect the message of The Hunger Games for you? What are your favorite quotes?

I'll be Captain Obvious and start with two related quotes from the first novel:

Quote 1: Between Peeta and Katniss
"I don't know how to say it exactly. Only... I want to die as myself. Does that make any sense?" he asks. I shake my head. How could he die as anyone but himself? "I don't want them to change me in there. Turn me into some kind of monster that I'm not."

I bite my lip feeling inferior. While I've been ruminating on the availability of trees, Peeta has been struggling with how to maintain his identity. His purity of self. "Do you mean you won't kill anyone?" I ask.

"No, when the time comes, I'm sure I'll kill just like everybody else. I can't go down without a fight. Only I keep wishing I could think of a way to... to show the Capitol they don't own me. That I'm more than just a piece in their Games," says Peeta.

Quote 2: Katniss
I want to do something, right here, right now, to shame them, to make them accountable, to show the Capitol that whatever they do or force us to do there is a part of every tribute they can't own. That Rue was more than a piece in their Games. And so am I.

Einstein's Firefly (whovian1419) | 16 comments The quote that best reflects the message of the Hunger Games in my opinion is:
“There’s almost always some wood,” Gale says. “Since that year half of them died of cold. Not much entertainment in that.”
It’s true. We spent one Hunger Games watching the players freeze to death at night. You could hardly see them because they were just huddled in balls and had no wood for fires or torches or anything. It was considered very anti-climactic in the Capitol, all those quiet bloodless deaths. Since then, there’s usually been wood to make fires."

I think that one tells you the Capital only wants a show and the more action, the more violence and killing, the better... I think it's supposed to make you realize that the Capital doesn't care.

And my two favorite quotes are from Mockingjay:

“It must be very fragile, if a handful of berries can bring it down.”
I think it's a very good, sarcastic point.

“Fire is catching! And if we burn, you burn with us!"
I think this one is when she realizes she is the Mockingjay and she is apart of the rebellion.

From The Hunger Games:
"District 12: Where you can starve to death in safety".

From Mockingay:
"I no longer feel allegiance to these monsters called human beings, despise being one myself. I think that Peeta was onto something about us destroying one another and letting some decent species take over. Because something is significantly wrong with a creature that sacrifices its children’s lives to settle its differences. You can spin it any way you like. Snow thought the Hunger Games were an efficient means of control. Coin thought the parachutes would expedite the war. But in the end, who does it benefit? No one. The truth is, it benefits no one to live in a world where these things happen".

Sarah | 6 comments I think these are significant:

“Here's some advice. Stay alive.”
-The Hunger Games

“I really can't think about kissing when I've got a rebellion to incite. ”
-Catching Fire

“We had to save you because you're the mockingjay, Katniss," says Plutarch. "While you live, the revolution lives.”
-Catching Fire

“What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again.”
-Mockingjay

I especially enjoy the last one, because even though the idea of hope is shadowed in the dystopian setting, it's still there. I love how quotes like this capture that.

Arthur Graf | 15 comments The one quote I like is: Leave the district. Run off. Live in the woods. You and I, we could make it. Gale Hawthorn

Thomas | 10 comments “What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again.” -Mockingjay
This one is my favorite quote. I'm in agreement with Sarah.

Brandon Head | 38 comments Wow. Oh wow! I never read any of the book's yet, but those words are so strong from those quotes! I want to really get my hands on them now. Lol.
There is so much of a essence of liberty in those words from those questions they ask between what they seek.
The second quote is my favorite.
Thanks Amy for them! I would of been lost with out them.

Hyun Suh | 11 comments I think these quotes would do it justice.

Quote 1: "And may the odds be ever in your favor.”

Quote 2: "Destroying things is much easier than making them"

message 12: by Kelli (new)

Kelli | 28 comments So I learned to hold my tongue and to turn my features into an indifferent mask so that no one could ever read my thoughts. Do my work quietly in school. Make only polite small talk in the public market. Discuss little more than trades in the Hob, which is the black market where I make most of my money. Even at home, where I am less pleasant, I avoid discussing tricky topics. Like the reaping, or food shortages, or the Hunger Games. Prim might begin to repeat my words and then where would we be? - The Hunger Games, Ch.1, pg. 6

This quote is so relevant to me because even though I donʼt live in a society where I would receive physical punishment for speaking my mind, I live in an area where most people have a different worldview than my own. Even with most of my family members if I were to express my views openly and completely I would be chastised and yelled at. Making my face completely expressionless just like Katniss can be the only recourse at times. The way it is described really resonates with me.
Then, when I can really say what I mean with people who really understand me, without any kind of judgment or fear, itʼs like I am out in the woods like Katniss with Gale, able to express every nuance and important observation.
