What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

The book starts off with 2 young boys who are best friends at a dinner (i think). One boy is pretty normal but the other one has issues with his dad and has some problems. A little later on they meet some small organization who hunts demons (maybe) and are taken to their hideout. They are given a test to see if either of them have above human abilities. The test is for them both to hold onto a staff at the same time. While the normal boy feels a lot of pain the one with problems holds onto it in more of a trance and they say he is special, but as it turns out he was being used by the Scourge (some dangerous demon).

After all this their friendship wavers and the one who now got powers goes off on his own until he goes to hell (which is kind of like the real world as opposed to the one they live in). The friend without powers goes to save him because he knows hes being used.
However the friend is killed, only to be brought back to life by "god" which turns out to be a semi-powerful being, who actually created humans and our world as more of an ant farm project.

Finally, it's revealed that one of the main characters who is a girl is the daughter of the Scourge and that hell (the real world) is actually on the back of a enormous dragon that no one wants to wake up because it'll wreck **** and destroy the universe (i think).
