Smilla's Sister (smillassister) | 1 comments Hello all,

I'm a bit at a loss because this particular genre (LitRPG space opera) doesn't seem to belong anywhere on the boards. For those not in the know, LitRPG is a relatively new subgenre of sci fi/fantasy which can be best described as novels that follow patterns of MMORPG games. The best known ones (although not space opera) are Legendary Moonlight Sculptor, Ready Player One, etc. Although normally LitRPG are set in fantasy game worlds, some venture into the domain of virtual space simulators and space-opera-ish MMORPGs, such as Edge of Reality (the first book of Phantom Server series) or the brand-new Start The Game (the first book of Galactogon series)

I'm sorry if I'm posting on the wrong board but this is the closest I could find to place LitRPG space opera in. The genre is relatively young but it keeps growing so I think it deserves a post here. Also, the above two novels can't be the only space opera LitRPGs around so any additions to this humble list will be greatly appreciated.

Anna Erishkigal (annaerishkigal) Hi Smilla!

All space opera-ish games belong to our community. We are the Space Opera Fans. We will assimilate your uniqueness into our awesome collective!

Okay ... how to classify this??? We use storytelling RPG games in my writing group for game night, so I recognize it as a genre. Since I've never played these particular games, I'm not sure where they'd fall on the continuum. We run the gamut from 'choose your own adventure' games to games that have dice rolls or other mechanics, but the common element seems to be the audience has to make up a story based on a choice of facts.

I'm going to create a new category called LitRPG in my master-list and if people know of other such stories just add them. I have never personally played a space opera LitRPG game, just fantasy-based ones, but I know what it is (sorta).

At least LitRPG could probably be pulled up on a Goodreads Listopia. :-)

Rion (orion1) | 108 comments MM0RPG = Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game

LitRPG = Literature Role Playing Game?

Maybe a play on Light Novels in the Manga world. This just reminds me of material in the Japanese sphere of influence like, .Hack, Sword Art Online, and others that have been gaining more popularity. Interesting that you included Ready Player One in this genre because I'll will be reading it next after Influx currently.

Anna Erishkigal (annaerishkigal) I asked my gamer friends about LitRPG and while they haven't personally had a chance to play it yet, they confirmed it's an emerging area of gaming.

I'm all for anything that mashes up all my favorite stuff! I had this Legion fan-fiction I wrote once about the post-apocalyptic wanderings of the fallen Archangel Gabriel that a group of cosplayers picked up and ran LARPS based out of. So much literature ends up as audiobooks or webcomics or with trailers / excerpts acted out on YouTube, so why NOT some LitRPG? It sounds like a blast.
