This month, we'll be nominating books for someone to consider when he or she selects the August book club read. My apologies for the lateness of this post. Perhaps we can consider making this an August and September read.

The best way to get your book selected is to talk it up, tell us why you selected it. This in and of itself could lead to some fun conversations!

I'm going to start reading Sir Kingsley William Amis book, Ending Up, this weekend. That we enter August at the same time is happenstance. I am ready to go with whatever is chosen for our August read.
I'm finishing Amis's Lucky Jim, and I was trying to decide on which book of his would be next. I came across this interesting article in The Guardian, from March, and after reading it I knew where the quest for my next Amis novel, would be ending up.

My choice for one of the contenders is - Ending Up.

Jonathan | 232 comments Well, I've been on a real short story kick for the last few weeks and I'm still looking for more. As it's just been released I'd like to propose The Prank: The Best of Young Chekhov, the selection of stories by the young Chekhov, what could be better?

Jason (uberzensch) | 85 comments I'm currently reading Talk by Linda Rosenkrantz. I'd also suggest We Think the World of You by J.R. Ackerly.

message 5: by Jason (new)

Jason (uberzensch) | 85 comments I should add that I'd also support the two previously-mentioned suggestions.

I just finished the Chekhov, and it is superb. Very quick, snappy stories (thanks in part to the generous illustrations!

Actually, that sounds completely funny at the same time it sounds completely irritating. Kingsley was such a...and no, I don't have aphasia...I want to say prick. He would agree with me, I think. In some ways I think it would be a riot, but in some ways don't think I'd make it through. Whatever.

Trish (bowedbookshelf) The Chekov sounds interesting. I did hear about its publication. And the Ackerley is supposed to be short, another charming quality. I'm game. I hope I can manage it -- time pressures, you know...

message 9: by Seana (new)

Seana | 432 comments I had a lot of sway last time so I will read whatever rises to the top. I wonder if another group email should go out, though? We had more response than I expected.

Due to the lateness in the month (my fault!), what if we just choose the Chekhov? We can run it the regular way in the middle of August for September. What do you think?

It sounds ok to me...but then I chose the Chekhov anyway. :-)

message 12: by Seana (new)

Seana | 432 comments I'd be game. I just did a little online class on Dubliners, so it would be an interesting comparison for me.

Jason (uberzensch) | 85 comments Sounds good to me!

Gary | 37 comments Its criminal, that I have never read Chekov. He has been on my TBR list a long time. This sounds like a great place to start - count me in.

Great! Thanks everyone for the input and sorry again for the delay that got us in this position. The book is out today!

I will get that post ported over as the August read.

Trish (bowedbookshelf) I'm in.

Julie | 2 comments I'm checking in late, but as this is a new release, is Chekov the NYRB Book of the Month?

message 19: by Trevor (new)

Trevor (mookse) | 1430 comments Mod
I don't think so. I know August's is Chocky, and I think July's was Talk.

Trish (bowedbookshelf) Gosh, I don't remember Chekov as being so broad in his humor. Finishing the first story and am marveling over the slapstick nature of his work. Wasn't imagining that.

Do you guys think you can move your comments to the book's group read thread?

Or just copy them there and I will delete them here (as I have to delete the double comments my phone appears to be making).

For those who haven't seen, I've got a thread going to help select September's book here. Please go check it out and chime in.
