I'm one of those people that absolutely cannot stand bending down the corners of pages to mark your spot. Therefore, I always tend to have a bookmark handy, whether it's an actual bookmark, an old receipt, my math homework... I usually grab the nearest piece of paper and shove it in my book, especially when I'm in a hurry. I'm not too particular about what I'm using to double as a bookmark.

So what are everyone else's thoughts on bookmarks?

Sam (sam222) I have several bookmarks. But most of them are homemade, I like making my own bookmarks. My favorite bookmark is one I made, its a zombie hand, I use it all the time. The only 2 actual bookmarks I have are ones I've found inside a used book. Ones got Garfield on it and the other one has eggs and bacon on it. I use both of them often. Since I have so many I like to rotate them so all of them are used.

Celia | 29 comments I love bookmarks, specially nice bookmarks with drawings and that kind of things, but I also like the ones that say things like: "I <3 whatever" or "I was in blah blah blah and remembered you"
I have tons of bookmarks, but I never use them. Every time I'm reading a book I get my finger between the pages and then just go with the book everywhere until I find a piece of paper.
I guess what I like about them is not using them, it's the bookmark itself.

I lose bookmarks all the time. Or they fall out and I want to scream. Somebody bought me a really nice silver clip one that seems to be soon the job at the moment... But I do bend corners!

message 5: by Riya (new)

Riya I actually don't use bookmarks. Most of the time I try to memorize what page I'm on right before I stop and then I just remember it next time I read the book! This is mainly because I always lose my bookmarks and when I'm reading the book I never know where to put them!

Every time I start a new book and can't find a bookmark, I always convince myself that I will be able to remember my page number. That's a rarity. I usually end up flipping through the first several chapters until I reach a section that I don't recognize, which ends up wasting quite a bit of time. I wish I could have as good of a memory as you do, Riya! It would certainly come in handy.

Riya Haha thanks Olivia! I used to always forget, but now I do it so often that I've learned to remember :P

Alexander (alexmata) | 32 comments I love bookmarks, a good friend of mine made a bookmark with the three covers of the "The Hunger Games" series is pretty cool. She gave it to me for my birthday a year ago and I'm still using that one.

I love bookmarks and use them all the time. Every time I start a new book it gets a new bookmark. I am also redesigning my bedroom this month and painting it so I have some paint chip samples that I have been using as bookmarks as well.

I recently found a stash of old bookmarks that I received in kindergarten and first grade when my school was competing in a read a thon. They're a bit tattered and worn, but they saw quite a bit of use and I wasn't very gentle with my belongings when I was little. Two or three of them are even torn in half. Now to find some tape...

I remember have book fairs at school and getting The Scholastic Book catalog when I was in grade school. I ordered so many books from it. Is it still around?

I'm not sure, to be honest. It was definitely in existence 5 or 6 years ago, but I haven't heard anything about it recently, which is disappointing. I used to love pouring over those catalogs and picking out the books I wanted to order.

message 13: by Holly (new)

Holly | 51 comments I've recently started using index cards for bookmarks. For all the books I have in the works, not enough bookmarks to go around.

message 14: by Kennedy (new)

Kennedy | 236 comments I have many bookmarks but i change bookmarks about once a year haha it's whenever i get a new one from the summer reading program. if i lose a bookmark i'll use anything to keep my place. One time i tucked the bottom part of the shirt i was wearing in it and held the book closed lol. I've also used bits of toilet paper napkins leaves and other assorted things :D

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) I always use a bookmark, and have formed quite the collection. I like to switch them up every once in awhile.

That doesn't sound stupid at all! I also have a 3D bookmark of a hummingbird and I love it. I use it all the time. And since the hummingbird looks like it's flying, I like to tell my friends that I'm "literally flying through the book." Cheesy, I know, but it cracks me up every time :P

I totally agree

message 20: by Yahaira (new)

Yahaira | 4 comments I have so many bookmarks it's crazy.I never bend pages I always feel the book looking at me and saying," Why? I didn't hurt you. What did I do to deserve this?" I have bookmarks stored everywhere sometimes they'll fall out of a notebook or binder in the halls and my friends laugh. If I don't have a bookmark I'll just grab something random and use it, but that rarely happens.

message 21: by Leann (new)

Leann (7leann) I don't like the pages bent either, that damages the book. My bookmarks are concert tickets, bookmarks from my favorite used bookstores, and my wedding bookmarks. We made custom, laminated bookmarks as gifts for our guests.
