An Unearthly Child
year: 0
the first doctor story ever, and there are quite a few memorable moments that's for sure. it was a lot better then i remembered the first time. broken into 4 parts, each with its own name i am too lazy to write down, lol. look it up if you're curious. basically though the story is your basic introduction. the doctor, susan, ian and barabara. the doctor and his first companions. that first episode where they are all introduced is full of lots of smile inducing moments. from susans stupid little dance to the first time you hear the tardis. especially though is the doctor and his cantankerous personality. he is a grumpy bastard, lol, i love it. i prefer the doctor kinda mean i think. hes much funnier.
they kidnap ian and barbara, which is hilarious and odd, and go back in time. the tardis is as unruly as ever though thats for sure as she takes them to year 0. its a caveman story, quest for fire, kinda boring. i dont know how educational it is considering it was supposed to be an educational show.
still tho, theres lots of firsts. we have the first time the doctor is referred to as doctor who after ian calls him doctor foreman. the screams of susan lead the way for every companion and her pair of lungs. the doctor using forensics to find out the real murderer of an old woman.
there were of course some moments that were perplexing. such as the part when the doctor almost kills a guy. a caveman gets mauled by an unnamed animal, probably bear, and while ian and barbara try to help him we see the doctor creeping up. he reaches down, finds a big rock then tests the weight of it. before he can take the injured man out of his misery though ian stops him, asking him what the hell he is up to. lying he says he was going to get the guy to draw a map in the sand with the rock. that was an odd thing, seeing the doctor, a character not yet fully evolved due to it being the first story, about to do something so cold and heartless.
overall, it wasn't my favourite story. i'm looking forward to the next one, The Dead Planet, as it brings in everyone's favourite bad guy the daleks. so until next time, thanks for readin.

The Dead Planet
planet:skaro
year:500(?)
this is a great one. the introduction of the daleks and their war with the thals. i put a question mark after the year because it was never mentioned, or at least if it was i didnt hear it. i suppose i could always just look it up as i am sure it is documented out there somewhere, but im too lazy. so i am going with the year 500 as that is how long ago, according to some daleks, that the neutron bomb that destroyed everything was detonated. nothing left means new calender is what i am thinking. feel free to correct me if you must though, lol.
overall the story is a classic. it introduces the ultimate of doctor bad guys on their home planet. i doubt the writer had any idea his dalek creation would become so instantly recognized and identified with the doctor but it certainly has. the doctor wouldnt be the doctor without the daleks, and they come in swinging, being the typical bastards they are. lots of scheming and imprisonment, paralyzing lasers and corny props, lol. the funniest i thought was the shovel for a serving tray arm.
theres also some more evidence of what a dick the first doctor was. he stranded them all on skarro in the first place, which is a lousy deal, but he did it by sabotaging the tardis. that certainly wouldnt go down these days, the tardis is at this point a character in the show.
great story though, two races out to get each other, a world destroyed, radiation mutants, all sorts of great stuff. plus of course the daleks. the story was so good it was also made into a doctor who movie starring peter cushing, i much prefer william hartnells take on it though. plus they made some changes to the character in the movie that i didnt really like. anyways, thats about it i guess.
if you want to get into the first doctor this is a great story to start with. you know the doctor, you know the daleks, you know more about them then they did, lol. its great looking into the future of their relationship. also it is a complete series, no recons. the reconstruction episodes due to being lost are rapidly approaching. i look forward to getting those out of the way. they are just not as entertaining, i dont know why. oh well, thems the breaks. 2 doctors then no recons. till next time, thanks again for reading

The Edge of Destruction
year: none really, travelling back in time
this was the first all tardis episode and i love it. definitely one of my favourite first doctor stories. the tardis starts acting up, as she is want to do, and knocks everyone out. they wake up with amnesia and it doesnt take long for them to start turning on each other. the doctor is a pretty big dick in this episode, saying some pretty harsh things, especially to barbra, which is all part of his character. hes not used to contact with anyone but susan and other timelords. everyone else is inferior. but he learns. after figuring out the deal thanks to susan they fix the tardis and all is well. the doctor is grudgingly forced to apologize, but you can tell he learned a lesson from the whole situation.
like i said this is a great doctor story. i love anything to do with the tardis, and there are so few purely tardis set episodes in the older series. another great thing is this is just one episode as opposed to the normal 4-6 episode long story ark.
i quite look forward to continuing with the aztecs, but i think there are some reconstruction episodes in that one. i dont like the recons.

all right, admittedly, i dont give this enough attention. considering i last watched the old doctor in march of last year, im definitely behind on my goal. perhaps its cuz i had a goal of 500 movies for 2014 (made that one) but now that thats all done with i can eventually get back to this. so if you are curious to read some old doctor episode reviews be patient, i will get back to it soon :)
Marco polo
Year: 1289
First things first, this whole episode arc is a reconstruction. Just picture and the audio for 7 episodes. It wasnt easy to watch, im not gonna lie. I definitely prefer the episodes that are the actual video (damn you careless 1960's bbc workers), but i do respect the work put into making the recons, thats about all the praise recons get from me. Now, to the story...
The doctor, susan, barbara and ian are now on the roof of the world, only to be captured by marco polo. The explorer is on his way to see kubla khan, bringing him goods or something. It doesnt matter, all that matters is polo takes the travellers prisoner, claiming the tardis, or flying caravan, as his own. So the doctor and friends must find a way to get the tardis back while not getting killed by traitorous mongols or weird bad sounding sandstorms. Polo eventually does come around to the doctors side, but only barely.
As for the doctor, hes actually not really in the story all that much. For the first 4 or 5 episodes hes so overwrought with emotions about the tardis being taken he seems to conk out for a while. Its definitely still in its educational phase as there is a lot of information about marco polo and his dealings with china. Whether its accurate or not to history, i have no idea, so i wouldnt watch this arc if youre doing a report on the guy.
Overall, not the greatest episode. Boring, shitty story, a bloody recon all the way throughout and the doctor wasnt at his best. Id only recommend this one to crazy doctor who fans like me who want to watch every episode.
