My atheist re-write of the Pentateuch - funny and thought provoking according to Daniel C Dennett and Steve Pinker. The Friendly Atheist likes it too http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendly...

Palgrave Macmillan (palgrave) | 1 comments We'd like to nominate Imagine There's No Heaven: How Atheism Helped Create the Modern World by Mitchell Stephens. The book explores the role of disbelief in shaping Western civilization and chronicles the lives of our greatest non-believers. It came out 2/25 and has been featured in:

Jimmy One thing, Donegal, is that I find it almost impossible to come up with atheist fiction. Is there some sort of list out there? Both the suggestions here are good but not quite fiction. Maybe we shouldn't limit the choices to genres.

Tom | 18 comments Jimmy - The Newer More English Version is fairly fictional... Imagining how the Pentateuch's stories might have been if written without god but with a bit of science and a bit of imagination. The premise is that the stories told in the Pentateuch did happen: there was a flood, Joseph was a real person and did guide Egypt through the famine, Moses did lead the slaves out of Egypt, etc but that they have all been mistold because of the introduction of a god. Remove god and think about how these events happened in real life: what caused Moses' plagues? What sort of a person was Abraham? What about Jacob? Have a read and a think - it reveals the Pentateuch in a whole new light.

I think from now on I'll just ask people to limit themselves to one nomination and skip the genre poll.
