This was a cool story, an interesting way to think about the world and how very complex it is. (view spoiler)
I liked this line, "That was when I fully realised just how much of a friend Jimmy-James Bannister truly was. He placed a greater value on my life than on his own." But I wasn't sure whether it was supposed to be facetious or not. It was kind of a throwaway.

That line, yeah. It stood out to me, too. I'm not sure Bannister actually meant to say it the way it came out. I'm definitely not sure why Crowther wrote it.
Very intriguing story - I hope others read it and give us some insights/ theories....

I don't see how the dates are messed up. The story was published in 1997 and the next event was to occur around 2004, 40 years after the events of the story which happened in 1964.
I don't think that line about friendship was meant to be facetious. I think he was being sincere.
My quibble is with the use of the word "palindromic" which means the same backwards and forwards, not just something going backwards.
