For those interested in reading Jabonkah Sackey's Liberian childhood memoir, DRIVING THE BIRDS, which covers her life as a bush girl where she was born into the Gola tribe in 1948 and shares her suffering female genital mutilation (FGM) at the hands of the Sande secret society at the age of eight, I recommend watching her interview. You can find the video on the home page of the publisher's website: search for Shadwell Publishing.
Thank you,

Author, DRIVING THE BIRDS
I wrote this (true) memoir for Jabonkah Sackey who was born in Liberia, West Africa, in 1948, deep in the bush. When Jabonkah and I met at work, she had been keeping her story a secret, from everyone, for 50 years; even her grown children did not know the secrets of her life.
I was (and still am) a writer of novels at the time we met. She kept referring to her life in the bush, and months later, I asked her. "What the heck is the bush?"
After she told me her story, I said, "Wow, has anyone wanted to write your story?" "Four had but I didn't trust them," she said. We starred at each other for unpleasant moments while I wondered if she trusted me, then finally she said, "Would like to write my story?" I almost jumped in the air when I said, "Yes."
Anyway, my friend Jeanette (Jabonkah) and I would appreciate your consideration of reading Jabonkah's childhood story. It's not an easy read but it is enriching.
