Danish-born adventurer Hans Tholstrup was the first to circumnavigate the Australian continent in an open boat. Later Tholstrup became involved in competitions with fuel saving vehicles. He designed a solar car called The Quiet Achiever, and traversed the 4,052 km between Sydney, New South Wales and Perth, Western Australia in 20 days. That was the precursor of the World Solar Challenge.

description

Hopefully your solar powered car is already on its way to Australia. Gather together your design team, find your coolest sunglasses and get ready for a long, long drive. (I would suggest you bring along an audio book or two :)

Books must be at least 200 pages. Re-reads are okay.

Everyone begins the race in Darwin, Australia.
Here are some interesting cities along the 3000 km route.

To get to Dunmarra:
(Overland Telegraph linesman, Dan O'Mara, disappeared in the area in the early 1900s. Noel Healy established a cattle station here in the 1930s and discovered O'Mara's skeleton in the bush. The local Aboriginal people couldn't pronounce 'O'Mara', and their attempts sounded more like 'Dunmarra'.)
*read a book with a main character by the name of Dan, Danny or Daniel
*read a book where someone finds a dead body
*read a book that starts with the letter 'D'
*read a book where a main character works with cattle
*read a book where someone gets a telegram
*read a book with someone whose family has lived in that area a long time

To get to Kulgera:
(The only public buildings in town are the roadhouse and the police station. Kulgera Roadhouse has actually been pinpointed as the geographical centre of Australia. In the 2006 Australian census it had a population of 50.)
*read a book with a police officer in the story
*read a book where someone breaks the law
*read the 2nd book in a trilogy
*read a book published in 2006
*read a book with less than 50 ratings here on Goodreads
*read a book where time is spent at an inn, tavern or nightclub (roadhouse)

To get to Glendambo:
(Each June, Glendambo hosts a Four Wheel Drive Outback Challenge)
*read a book with 4 words in the title
*read a book with a vehicle on the cover
*read a book where the main character overcomes obstacles
*read any book over 200+ pages
*read a book set in a different country than you
*read a book that you have read before

If you want to, you can participate in a reading challenge within a reading challenge -
read at least 2 books from the Glendambo Four Wheel Drive Outback Challenge course challenges:

*rope course at night - nighttime on the cover
*water pit - a main character goes swimming
*large rock course - rocks on the cover
*pipe hurdle - title or author's name starts with 'P'
