Oh my goodness! Where does the time go? Last I checked, September was just starting....and now it's gone and it's time to get the third quarterly checkpoint up and running. Let's see how our challengers are doing after 9 months are under the ol' mountain-climbing belt.

For those who would like to participate in this checkpoint post, I'd like you to do two things:

1. Tell us how many miles you've made it up your mountain (# of books read). If you're really ambitious, you can do some intricate math and figure out how the number of books you've read correlates to actual miles up Pike's Peak, Mt. Ararat, etc.

2. Complete ONE (or more if you like) of the following:
A. Who has been your favorite character so far? And tell us why, if you like.
B. Pair up two of your reads using whatever connection you want to make. Written by the same author? Same genre? Same color cover? Both have a main character named Clarissa? Tell us the books and what makes them a pair.
C. Which book (read so far) has been on your TBR mountain the longest? Was it worth the wait? Or is it possible you should have tackled it back when you first put it on the pile? Or tossed it off the edge without reading it all?
D. Choose 1-4 titles from your stacks and using a word from the title, do an image search. Post the first all-eyes-friendly picture associated with that word.

Please prepare your answers in a comment below.

And what do you get for all that hard work (and distraction from the actual climb)? The link will close at 11:59 pm on Saturday, October 10. Sometime next Sunday I will crank up the Custom Random Number Generator and pick a winning climber. He or she will have the chance to add to their TBR stack via my gently-used book vault (prize list will be sent). Just think, if you win a book you can start up a pile for next year's Mount TBR Challenge.

Even if you're not in the mood for a prize or you've already finished your climb, I'd love to have you check in with us and tell us all your news!

***Please note--this thread is for Checkpoint comments only. If you would like to cheer on your fellow challengers (and I do encourage it), please go to their climbing folder. Links that are not Checkpoint-specific will be removed--to make it easier for me to track a winner. Enter here OR on my blog challenge site (but not both places, please).

Holli | 47 comments I am at 84 books so far.

Who has been your favorite character so far? And tell us why, if you like.

Pike Logan in One Rough Man
He had such a devastating tragedy happen to him, yet there is a part of him not ready to give up on life entirely or the human race. He also is willing to work with Jennifer Cahill, a civilian who also helped to bring him back to some semblance of sanity, against madmen without harping on the fact she is non-military. He uses what skills she has, coupling them with his own, to help him and his team work toward finding and stopping the bad guys.

Nell Mt TBR Checkpoint #3

1. I've read 23 out of 36 books for Mt Vancouver. That's 64% or 6,948 feet. I'll have to pick up the pace to make it to the summit by year's end or read skinnier books. Right now I'm in the middle of a 600+ page book - too bad I can only count it once. ;-)

2.
B. The Night She Died and Six Feet Under are the first two books in Dorothy Simpson's mystery series featuring Inspector Thanet.

C. Which book (read so far) has been on your TBR mountain the longest?
The Franchise Affair by Josephine Tey
Was it worth the wait? Yes, clever mystery with a different twist on the locked room.

D.
Cold Sassy Tree by Olive Ann Burns
Sassafras tree

Rebel Without a Cake by Jacklyn Brady
Pineapple Coconut Cake

This Dark Road to Mercy by Wiley Cash
Dark road

Jessika (jessika_56) 1. I've read 38 out of my original 36 books, so 10 more til the next mountain.

2C. A Crown of Swords, The Path of Daggers, and Winter's Heart (books 7, 8, 9 in The Wheel of Time series) have all been on my TBR since before I started Goodreads in 2011. I'm guessing since 2009, because that's when I got married and my husband was the one who introduced me to the series. I'm still enjoying the series, and I hope to finish the last 5 books before December 2016.

Sam (aramsamsam) 1. I recently reached book #34. I thought I'd be quicker, but now I doubt I will reach another peak after Mt. Vancouver.

2A. My answer remains the same: The protagonist of The Remains of the Day, Stevens. Such a complex character. I loved reading his thoughts. And between the lines.
2B. Das Leichenbegängnis der großen Mama and Die Klavierspielerin were written by Nobel Prize laureates.
2C. My oldest TBR book is one of those I'm currently reading. But I've also just finished a very old book from my TBR: Die Klavierspielerin. Impressive read, but I was intimidated for a reason.
2D. Die Schrecken des Eises und der Finsternis
Finsternis (darkness)

message 6: by Leslie (new)

Leslie 1. I have reached the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro with 60 books. While I will continue climbing, I don't think I will reach El Toro (75 books).

2. D) Three Men in a Boat (great book!)

Darker Than Amber

Out on a Limb: A Smoky Mountain Mystery

message 7: by RachelvlehcaR (new)

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) I'm still plugging away to see how high I can reach. :)

1. I have two Mount TBR's going. The first is my Kindle list. I have reached Level 8: Mt. Olympus (150 +). I have read a total of 160 kindle books that I've owned. My second list is Physically Owned list. I'm currently on Level 3: Mt. Vancouver (36). I have read a total of 29 Physically Owned books. This doesn't include library books or borrowed books. I've made it to 80.5% up Mt. Vancouver at the elevation of 12,693 ft.

2. A. There are too many wonderful books I've read. Here is one book I enjoyed.
The Forgotten Tudor Women: Margaret Douglas, Mary Howard & Mary Shelton - I love Tudor history. This was a great informational book about the women behind the scenes of the Tudor house. I did learn a lot. It made a lot of other connections I didn't see before.

Rabbit {Paint me like one of your 19th century gothic heroines!} (raven_tiger) | 6 comments Level 3: Mt.Vancouver

As of October 8th, 2015 I've read: 10
As of October 8th , 2015 I've DNFed: 5
As of October 8th , 2015 I've got 21 more books to go.

I've read a lot more books this year, including others on my bookshelves, but I'm trying to purge through the romance novels I have on my shelf. Romance is one of my least favorite genres, but one of my guilty pleasures. So I have 31 romance novels to go through, and I've read 10 and DNFed 5. So I've read 15 books out of 31. If I finish the romance novels, I'll pick a few other books to finish before the end of the year.

D. Choose 1-4 titles from your stacks and using a word from the title, do an image search. Post the first all-eyes-friendly picture associated with that word.

Well, I hauled out the Custom Random Number Generator and after feeding in all the entries, listening to it clank and whir, we have a winner! Our lucky climber is comment #6 Leslie! Congratulations, Leslie! I'll be contacting you with the prize list very soon.

Thanks again to all of you who checked in. I enjoyed reading your answers...and thanks also to all who are busy climbing with us! It's hard to believe that the next checkpoint will be the wrap-up for the end of the year. Are you ready to make a final sprint to the finish?
