Valerie | 39 comments I really enjoy the Ilona Andrews books. Ilona Andrews. The Magic series is really engrossing.

I used a copy of Into the Wild that I had free on my Kindle from way back. It was a nice, light read...and, actually well done.

I read Watership Down by Richard Adams which was adequate, but I personally prefer something like Animal Farm by George Orwell .

Heather Caitlin, people keep recommending Watership Down, but I don't want to read anything that depressing right now. lol. And sadly, I read Animal Farm last year and I don't want to do rereads.

Valerie, I'll check those out. thanks.

Nicole (aggie44) | 79 comments I read The Island of Doctor Moreau, but you could also count any fantasy, sci-fi, or paranormal that includes elves, aliens, dragons, werewolves, etc.

Nicole (aggie44) | 79 comments I should add that I didn't read this one as requiring *exclusively* non-human characters.

Stephanie (shynotebooks) | 73 comments yeah, same as Nicole. I did a book about gods and goddesses. like, it was at least from the perspective of a goddess.

Ah, nothing depressing. How do you feel about paranormals? I really enjoyed Anne Bishop's Written in Red (The Others, #1) by Anne Bishop which is neither depressing nor exclusively about humans but is the beginning of a series.

Sarabeth Mason | 29 comments I read Ape House by Sara Gruen. If you haven't read Water for Elephants by her I highly recommend it. I know that the animals in both of these don't really talk or anything but they are absolutely important characters in the book. and neither was really sad or depressing in the end.

Heather Thanks all! I think I'm gonna go with The Island of Dr. Moreau. It seems really interesting and I've liked other H.G. Wells that I've read.

Theresa For mystery fans, there are several writers who have pets that actively assist in solving the mystery:

Rita Mae Brown series with Mrs. Murphy and Sneaky Pie
Marion Babson Murder at the Cat Show, and others
Spencer Quinn Chet & Bernie series
Rebecca Hale
Miranda James

Just to name a few faves. You can find more lists at www.cozy-mystery.com
