Alexander Holbrook | 3 comments I have a manuscript, but this is more of a graphically designed novel rather than a straight comic - I want to enter into a working relationship with someone rather than just pay someone a huge one off fee. Is there anywhere where these wonderful people congregate?

Joey Collard (fringehiker) | 2 comments Hi Xan,

I did much the same thing - a graphic novel that required a manuscript.

It's really hard finding an artist of appropriate quality who has the time to devote to a work.

Most artists want at least an up front fee, which I think is entirely fair - they have no idea if your idea will pan out, of course.

I searched among my friends and none of them had the combination of skill and free time; that is even before I filtered by cost.
I also browsed https://www.reddit.com/r/comicbookcol...
which has a decent amount of activity.

In the end, I went with a local commission place, and got a big surprise. They turned out to be really engaged in every project they work on, and they've been very passionate about the project so far. The fee is higher than some random friend would be likely to charge, but the quality is proportional.
So I recommend visiting some local place and getting the feel for their passion about your topic. Most places seem to do free consultations and you can walk away at any time.
