1. How old were you when you learned how to read?
I think I was 5 or 6?

2. Were you a big reader growing up?
Yes, very much so!

3. Are there any books that left a big impression on you as a kid?
King of the Wind: The Story of the Godolphin Arabian
Dracula (Yes I read Dracula as a kid. I adored this book)
The Enchanted Forest Chronicles: Dealing with Dragons / Searching for Dragons / Calling on Dragons / Talking to Dragons (One of my all time favorite series! Can't wait to re-read these with my daughter!)

4. Favorite genres? (Do you read mainly fiction or non-fiction? Do you have a soft spot for horror, sci-fi, or romance?)
I usually stick to Sci-Fi/Fantasy but I can really get into just about anything except Romance or predictable cheesy YA.

5. Top 5 favorite authors.
Jules Verne
H.G. Wells
H.P. Lovecraft
Stephen King
John Scalzi

6. Top 5 favorite books.
Welcome to Night Vale
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea
Watership Down
Dracula
Off to Be the Wizard

7. Where do you prefer to read?
Outside if the weather is nice. I usually end up curled on the couch with a blanket and some hot tea though.

8. Do you like to eat or drink something while you read? If so, what are your foods and beverages of choice?
I don't know if I necessarily prefer to eat while reading but I usually end up doing so because I read a lot on lunch break or over dinner.

9. What do you typically wear when you read? Casual wear? PJ's? Jeans? Something more elaborate and stylish?
Casual wear usually or just whatever I happen to be in when I plop down with my book.

10. On average, how many books do you read a month?
hmm maybe 5 or 6?? I think that number varies a lot.

Usually 3. A physical book that is my main read, a kindle book for reading when I'm out and about and an audio-book for housecleaning.

Constant reader but there have been periods where I didn't really read much due to the craziness of everyday life.

24. What's the longest you've gone without reading?
Probably about half a year. That was around the time I had my daughter.

25. Why do you read? (This is a tough one, I know)
Because stories are absolutely amazing. They take you to another world. They push aside your problems and allow you to live another life for a while! Stories give you all the feelings that remind you of the beautifully tragic human condition. They make you laugh and cry and learn. They are just amazing!

message 13: by Allie (new)

Allie (awhit99) 1. How old were you when you learned how to read?
I think I was about 3 or 4. My parents made sure to instill reading into my life as early as possible, which I'll always be grateful for.

2. Were you a big reader growing up?
Oh yeah, and I also started writing too. I liked the idea of creating my own stories!

3. Are there any books that left a big impression on you as a kid?
We read The Boxcar Children series in school, and I really enjoyed it. The Rainbow Fish, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, Tacky the Penguin, and The Book Thief were also big ones that I could still enjoy today!

4. Favorite genres? (Do you read mainly fiction or non-fiction? Do you have a soft spot for horror, sci-fi, or romance?)
I love dystopia and post-apocalyptic stuff. I've recently gotten into Sci-Fi as well. I'm always a sucker for romance and horror, especially Stephen King.

5. Top 5 favorite authors.
1.) Ilsa J. Bick
2.) Pierce Brown
3.) Jodi Picoult
4.) Stephen King
5.) Patrick Ness

6. Top 5 favorite books.
I have more favorite series' than single books, but there's a couple books that will always have a special place in my heart.
1.) Jane Eyre
2.) The Book Thief
3.) the Shatter Me Series (Tahereh Mafi)
4.) The Chaos Walking series (Patrick Ness)
5.) the Ashes series (Ilsa J. Bick)

7. Where do you prefer to read?
Either in my room or outside. Either way I prefer to be alone, because I get distracted so easily!

8. Do you like to eat or drink something while you read? If so, what are your foods and beverages of choice?
I do like to snack, but I have to be careful because this can turn into mindless eating! I usually go for Goldfish crackers lol.

9. What do you typically wear when you read? Casual wear? PJ's? Jeans? Something more elaborate and stylish?
Usually casual stuff or PJs. I like to be nice and comfy.

10. On average, how many books do you read a month?
I wish I could say more, but I'd say about two at the most right now. Hopefully I can get it up to more!

11. How do you get hold of the books? Do you buy them at a bookstore, visit an online store, borrow from a friend or family member, or do you use the library?
I often buy more than I should, but lately I'm trying my best to stick to the library.

12. Paperback, hardcover, or digital?
Paperback, but I indulge in hardcover and digital as well :).

13. At what point do you give up on a book?
If I'm just not getting into it and it feels like a chore to read it.

14. How do you find about new books and authors?
Usually I just pick books off the shelf if the cover looks enticing and the description seems good enough. Then I look for related books. I also use friends' recommendations and Goodreads.

15. Best reading-related memory?
There's not really one single memory, but any time I've started a book and I get that warm feeling that I just know it's gonna be a good one.

16. Worst reading-related memory?
I can't even remember the title now, but I had a book that I thought was gonna be great and it ended up being not so great :(. It was pretty disappointing, especially since my expectations for the book were so high.

17. Are you a book sniffer?
Yess.....

18. What was the last book(s) you bought?
Coraline by Neil Gaiman! It's a great book and my favorite movie and I still can't believe I waited so long to get it.

19. What was the last book you checked out from the library?
I checked out a whole series because I don't know how to limit myself. It's the Frieda Klein series by Nicci French, and it's one of the best.

20. On average, how many hours a week do you spend reading?
Maybe about 3. Again, I really need to step it up.

21. Are you a fast or slow reader?
I'd say I'm in between. Pretty fast when I'm actually reading, but it takes me forever to finish a book.

22. Do you sometimes read more than one book at the time?
I always read more than one book at a time. Probably why I never finish them.

23. Are you what Stephen King refers to as a Constant Reader, or are there periods where you don't read at all?
Unfortunately, there are periods where I don't pick up a book.

24. What's the longest you've gone without reading?
A few weeks.

25. Why do you read? (This is a tough one, I know)
To escape, definitely. And to get ideas and inspiration for my own stories, even if they just stay in my head and never get on paper.

12. Paperback, hardcover, or digital?
All three are wonderful, but hardcover is my preference.

13. At what point do you give up on a book?
I try to finish every book I start. But if I give up, it's usually past the half-way point.

14. How do you find about new books and authors?

Finishing And Then There Were None, thinking I was home alone, and my sister scared the SNOT out of me.

I'm a slow reader.

22. Do you sometimes read more than one book at the time?

24. What's the longest you've gone without reading?
Maybe a couple weeks.

25. Why do you read? (This is a tough one, I know)
I read for enjoyment. I read to find myself. I read to forget myself. I read to make friends and visit old ones.

message 16: by Naomi-Lynn Marguerite (last edited Jun 11, 2018 04:45PM) (new)

Naomi-Lynn Marguerite (naomi-lynnmarguerite) 1. How old were you when you learned how to read?

When I turned 4 years old I began to read.

2. Were you a big reader growing up?

Yes, I was always reading.

3. Are there any books that left a big impression on you as a kid?
The Bible, The Narnia Series, The "How To" series (e.g. How To Get Good Grades, How To Clean Your Room), anything by Thornton Burgess, any history coffee table book.

4. Favorite genres? (Do you read mainly fiction or non-fiction? Do you have a soft spot for horror, sci-fi, or romance?)

I read both fiction and non-fiction. There is very little I will not read. I love reading dictionaries and encyclopedias. I read almost every genre although some are too dark for my taste. Horror is my least likely to red genre. In fiction: espionage, thriller, fantasy, science fiction, romance (pansexual), mystery, historical, &c. In non-fiction: history, textbooks of psychology, criminology, physics, mathematics, natural sciences, biography, &c.

5. Top 5 favorite authors.

Really?!? You know this can change day to day by what you're reading or just your mood.

Here is my attempt at authors I couldn't live without.

Not ranked:
C.S. Lewis
William Shakespeare
Thornton Burgess
Sloane Kennedy
Bodie Thoene

6. Top 5 favorite books.

This is almost harder than the previous one.

Harper Study Bible-NRSV
The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis
Logan's Need by Sloane Kennedy
The Odessy by Homer
The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare

7. Where do you prefer to read?

As a Terran incapable of affording the very expensive price tag of space travel (and who promised her Daddy never to leave the planet), I prefer to read on Earth. Anywhere I happen to be at the time. Er ... except a car. That's just a bad combination.

8. Do you like to eat or drink something while you read? If so, what are your foods and beverages of choice?

Only if it's meal time. Then my meal grows cold while I read unless someone reminds me to eat. If we've gotten together for a family meal I don't bring my tablet to the table of course. I value my life too much.

9. What do you typically wear when you read? Casual wear? PJ's? Jeans? Something more elaborate and stylish?

Whatever I'm in at the moment, be it Jim Jams or dressed to the nines returning from an event.

10. On average, how many books do you read a month?

Oh, about 20 to 30.

11. How do you get hold of the books? Do you buy them at a bookstore, visit an online store, borrow from a friend or family member, or do you use the library?

I only read ebooks, so I use the library, Kindle Unlimited, and buy from Amazon, Kobo, Google Play, and iBooks.

12. Paperback, hardcover, or digital?

Only digital.

13. At what point do you give up on a book?

I rarely give up on a book. However, there have been a few where there is a straw that breaks the camel's back. I can think of two where I stopped reading with less than two pages left to the book.

14. How do you find about new books and authors?

News and magazine articles, recommendations based on books I've read, looking through newly released and newly returned at the library, seeing what others are reading, &c.

15. Best reading-related memory?

When what you're reading impacts some other aspect of your life. I can think of moments like that with so many different books. One author wrote (my apologies for not remembering which one), "Fiction contains truth just not fact." Those moments of finding those truths and the light bulb coming on are an amazing part of reading. Even better is when you have a paradigm shift and your world view is expanded just that little bit more.

16. Worst reading-related memory?

The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje

Now I'm Canadian and am proud of this author and his success. I even enjoy his other books. But if I could bleach my brain and remove all memory of having read this book, a requirement in university, I would be willing to.

17. Are you a book sniffer?

Only if I think I accidentally sprayed perfume on my tablet (again).

18. What was the last book(s) you bought?

Dune by Frank Herbert

19. What was the last book you checked out from the library?

Common Ground by Justin Trudeau

20. On average, how many hours a week do you spend reading?

Ummm ... 40 to 50 maybe. I've never thought about it.

21. Are you a fast or slow reader?

Fast reader. I can read 3 or 4 books a day.

22. Do you sometimes read more than one book at the time?

Always. Normally 2 or 3 going at a time.

23. Are you what Stephen King refers to as a Constant Reader, or are there periods where you don't read at all?

I am a constant reader.

24. What's the longest you've gone without reading?

Six months due to a medical issue.

25. Why do you read? (This is a tough one, I know)

Because where there are words there is knowledge. It doesn't matter the genre, if you are open to it you will always learn something. You just need to be strong in yourself so you're not swayed by every passing opinion or sentiment but stay true to who you are and your convictions, growing and changing as is best for you.

message 17: by Kayla (new)

Kayla Duff 1. How old were you when you learned how to read?
Probably around 4 when I was reading on my own - my parents started me super early.

2. Were you a big reader growing up?
Yes, absolutely. My mom took me to the library every week during the summer, and during the school year I spent my extra time in the library, even in early elementary school.

3. Are there any books that left a big impression on you as a kid?
Stereotypical, but Harry Potter. HP1 was the first chapter book my parents read to me, and HP2 was the first chapter book I read by myself. Harry Potter shaped my love of reading and also my love of creating stories, and even now I'm constantly in love with the world JK Rowling created.

4. Favorite genres? (Do you read mainly fiction or non-fiction? Do you have a soft spot for horror, sci-fi, or romance?)
The books I tend to pick up are YA fantasy, urban fantasy, dystopia, or science fiction.

5. Top 5 favorite authors.
Neal Shusterman
Christopher Paolini
Kristin Cashore
Anne McCaffrey
J.K. Rowling

6. Top 5 favorite books.
Graceling by Kristin Cashore.
Unwind by Neal Shusterman.
Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins.
Eragon by Christopher Paolini
Jurassic Park by Michael Chrichton

7. Where do you prefer to read?
I can read anywhere, but I love a good reclining chair next to a window.

8. Do you like to eat or drink something while you read? If so, what are your foods and beverages of choice?
Nah, I tend to just sit and read. I get so invested in books that I forget to eat/drink whatever I have in front of me.

9. What do you typically wear when you read? Casual wear? PJ's? Jeans? Something more elaborate and stylish?
Just a comfy pair of shorts and a t-shirt.

10. On average, how many books do you read a month?
If I had my way, it would be around 8. As it is, I'm super busy with school, so it's probably more like 1-2.

11. How do you get hold of the books? Do you buy them at a bookstore, visit an online store, borrow from a friend or family member, or do you use the library?
Most of the books that I read, I buy. I am a Barnes & Noble fiend, or I get them on my Kindle, though I don't really like reading on my kindle. I like books that I can keep, so I don't tend to borrow them.

12. Paperback, hardcover, or digital?
Always paperback or hardcover, never digital unless I have no other choice.

13. At what point do you give up on a book?
I think I've only ever read two or three books that I've given up on, but generally if I'm a good third of the way through and I just can't take it, I put it down.

14. How do you find about new books and authors?
I follow a lot of authors/publishers on Twitter, and I also get email newsletters with new released or titles recommended for me. Plus I keep up with authors that I like.

15. Best reading-related memory?
I distinctly remember bringing the seventh Harry Potter book with me on a road trip and I finished the entire book on the car ride. Basically I opened up the first page as we were leaving the driveway, and the next time I looked up we were 9 hours down the road.

16. Worst reading-related memory?
Reading A Tale of Two Cities in high school. It's the only book I've ever wanted to burn.

17. Are you a book sniffer?
YES.

18. What was the last book(s) you bought?
The last book I bought with my own money was Furyborn.

19. What was the last book you checked out from the library?
It's been a long time since I checked something out from the library, but I think it was a craft book about writing fantasy.

20. On average, how many hours a week do you spend reading?
It really varies week to week. Busy weeks, generally only 1-2 hours. If I have a lot of free time, more like 12-14.

21. Are you a fast or slow reader?
I'm a super quick reader. It frustrates my family to no end because they're all slow readers, so I finish books in a couple of hours while it takes them weeks.

22. Do you sometimes read more than one book at the time?
Oh yes, absolutely. Last month I was switching between four depending on my mood.

23. Are you what Stephen King refers to as a Constant Reader, or are there periods where you don't read at all?
There are periods where I don't read at all, mainly because of my work and school schedule.

24. What's the longest you've gone without reading?
I think I went about six months without reading anything for pleasure (I had to read textbooks for school) and it was torture.

25. Why do you read? (This is a tough one, I know)
For me, reading provides a release from the real world. Getting lost in a book is one of my favorite feelings.

message 18: by TraceyL (new)

TraceyL 1. How old were you when you learned how to read?
Around 3 - thanks Sesame Street!

2. Were you a big reader growing up?
Yes, mostly through elementary school and high school

3. Are there any books that left a big impression on you as a kid?
The Goosebumps series created my interest in horror, sci-fi and fantasy. There was a small bookstore in a strip mall near my house, and I used to beg my parents for $5 every week or two to get a new one

4. Favorite genres? (Do you read mainly fiction or non-fiction? Do you have a soft spot for horror, sci-fi, or romance?)
Science Fiction, Dystopian, Horror, Fantasy

5. Top 5 favorite authors.
Stephen King
George Orwell
Margaret Atwood
J.K. Rowling
Edgar Allan Poe

6. Top 5 favorite books.
1984
The Handmaid's Tale
Wool Omnibus
Far From the Madding Crowd
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

7. Where do you prefer to read?
In bed

8. Do you like to eat or drink something while you read? If so, what are your foods and beverages of choice?
Nothing in particular

9. What do you typically wear when you read? Casual wear? PJ's? Jeans? Something more elaborate and stylish?
Pajamas

10. On average, how many books do you read a month?
20

11. How do you get hold of the books? Do you buy them at a bookstore, visit an online store, borrow from a friend or family member, or do you use the library?
Lately the Libby app has been my main reading/listening method. I only buy physical books if they are favorites. I also torrent ebooks.

12. Paperback, hardcover, or digital?
Digital all the way. I want to keep physical books in pristine condition without cracking the spine or folding pages, so they are actually annoying to read.

13. At what point do you give up on a book?
I try to read at least 1/3 of a book before giving up on it, but there have been some books which I quit after the first chapter. There are so many great books in the world - I don't need to waste time on the bad ones.

14. How do you find about new books and authors?
Goodreads mainly, but I'll also walk around my local bookstore to see what they have featured. If a movie is coming out that I want to see I always check if it was based on a book so I can read that first.

15. Best reading-related memory?
I remember reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix as a teenager and sobbing when (view spoiler) died. No other book had hit me that hard in the feels before.

16. Worst reading-related memory?
Being forced to read Heart of Darkness in high school. It's under 200 pages but felt like 1000. The guy spends two pages describing a man eating toast!!!!!! Fuck that book.

17. Are you a book sniffer?
No - I didn't even know that was a thing

18. What was the last book(s) you bought?
The Audible Monster Collection which is 3 books in one: The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dracula, and Frankenstein

19. What was the last book you checked out from the library?
I just started The Shining using the library Libby app

20. On average, how many hours a week do you spend reading?
Tricky question, because I tend to have an Audiobook playing while I'm doing other things, including being at work. Probably 15 hours on an average week, but there's about one week a month where I go crazy and spend all my free time reading, making it about 30+.

21. Are you a fast or slow reader?
Fast but if I'm really enjoying a book I will slow down to really savor it

22. Do you sometimes read more than one book at the time?
I usually switch back and forth between 2 books, especially if one is a really dense read and I need a break from it.

23. Are you what Stephen King refers to as a Constant Reader, or are there periods where you don't read at all?
I'm in my 30's and I've basically spent the past 10 years not reading at all (except fan fiction which I've read millions of pages of). I've picked it up again in the last 6 months, and am going full force and reading a least an hour every day.

24. What's the longest you've gone without reading?
10 years

25. Why do you read? (This is a tough one, I know)
I like stories. When I don't read I watch movies and tv shows. It's just another way to consume media.
