The Demented Book Club discussion

This is the spoiler discussion page for Ask the Passengers only from chapters 1-15. Only read the discussions if you have finished reading Chapter 15!

Kind of meh about this right now. I was really enjoying this in the beginning, but find some things annoying now. I don't like how Astrid kept everything from Kristina and Justin. I get the fact that she isn't sure and doesn't want to label herself, but as of then, she was still dating a girl, and that fact at least shouldn't have been kept from her best friends. Moreover, though I kind of related in the beginning, does anyone else think she's overdoing it with the They say: ...? Astrid's acting whiny and thinking too much about people saying stuff.
Other than all of that, Astrid's philosophical discussions are super entertaining. I really like Dee and Kristina, too as side-characters, though I feel like family has a bigger role to play in this book. Still figuring out everyone from her family so can't comment anything about that. Overall, enjoyable so far.

I'm not too far into the book just yet, but it reminds me of some of the books I read when I was younger. Mostly about a character's feelings and what makes them who they are. So far, I'm finding her thoughts regarding her sexuality to be very real.

I agree with that completely! Her thoughts have been portrayed pretty amazingly by King. Especially how the cave is used as a metaphor to explain how she feels about the town.

Astrid's thoughts about the town may be my favorite part so far. I like that she refuses to be a small town girl while Ellis embraces it. It's an interesting dynamic for sisters. I'd like more with that.

Her relationship with her mother is confusing. Are they not super close because of the small town girl thing?

Also, I feel bad for Kristina and Justin. They seem comfortable with their sexualities, but I hate that they have to lie and I also wish that Astrid didn't lie to them about herself. But I get that she's just not ready to talk about herself.

Oh! Forgot to mention that the love part is so interesting! Does she actually have an ability to send love to people?

The way I see it, I think everyone has that ability. That's the whole point, maybe, that anywhere you send it, love always reaches out and helps someone who's in need of it. Not only that, but also how love is shown as the only power that can ease anyone of their worries and guide them in their problems. It's all very interesting, actually. What do you think?

I think that could be true, and I hadn't thought about that before, in relation to the book or in real life. It's really nice to read about a character who feels so much for people. Love really can help all problems.
