Bill Well, I've posted my initial challenge thoughts. I may change some of the books before end December and I may add a further challenge. But we'll see.. So many books, so many challenges, so little time to read.. ;)

message 3: by Alison (new)

Alison Parry_jones | 20 comments some great choices I have never gone wrong with Colin Dexter, along with Reginald Hill he is one of the best English mystery writers.

I read those books for a while. But then I remembered that I hate cats. So I read books with dogs in them now.

message 8: by Bill (new)

Bill How long did it take you to realize that, Jan?.. lol

Jan C (woeisme) | 39173 comments Too long, Bill.

message 10: by Annie (new)

Annie (annie-somanybookssolittletime) I am really thrilled with your choices. I especially love Lilian Jackson Braun and even I already read "The car who ate Danish Modern" in French, I would be more than happy to read it again in English! I am found of inspector Morse stories too. Chinese mystery (I read a lot of "Judge Ti" written by Robert van Gulik), and archeological ones are of great interest. I just read Lucy Worsley's "A very British Murder" and I think of reading another one of her next year. She wrote about Margery Allingham in this book, so I'll add your selection to my list! Forensic mystery tempt me as I watch a lot of "NCIS" style series!
I'll post my 2016 list when I'll have made up my mind!
Happy New Year, full of mystery to all of you!

message 11: by Bill (new)

Bill Thanks for our comments, Annie. I'll have to check out Lucy Worsley.

Thanks, Zoe. I think I've read only the first two in that series.

One of many great things about this group: You will never run out of ideas for "more interesting crime novels!"

Annie (annie-somanybookssolittletime) Hello, I just finished my first book of the year : P.D. James : "Death of an Expert Witness".
I had some difficulties with the forensic hierarchy and vocabulary in the first chapters but I enjoyed it very much.

Now I'll start an easier one (I think so at least as it looks to be for younger readers ) : "Agatha Raisin and the Haunted House" by M.C. Beaton.
I won't be able to read it as fast, as we start to study "Jane Eyre" tomorrow and this will take a lot of my time as there are quizzes and homework to do!

Hey, Annie. What you need to do is open up the folder for the 2016 Reading Group Challenges. What you should see when you do is a list of everybody's individual threads. Just below the name of the folder and on the right hand side you should see two links, one that reads 'edit folder' and the other that reads 'new topic'. If you click on new topic a window will open up. Under topic make the title of your thread, something like, 'Annie's 2016 Reading Group Challenge' and then in the window called 'comment', list your books and author and whatever else you want, then just click 'Post' at the bottom of the page on the left side. If you can't find that, let me know here and I'll start the thread for you and post your books. Then you just have to comment as you normally would. Hope this helps. It's pretty straight-forward once you try. Now if you're doing this on a ipad or phone or something other than a laptop or computer, then it might be different and I don't know if what I wrote above will work. But let me know.

Bill Finished my first book of the year this morning and enjoyed very much. Until the Night (John Cardinal and Lise Delorme Mystery, #6) by Giles Blunt by Giles Blunt is the 6th book in the John Cardinal police series, set in Algonquin Bay, Ontario, Canada. I enjoy this series very much, partly because it's set in my home town. Cardinal and his partner, Lise Delorme, are interesting character, to say the least and the cases are often gritty and well-written. This story has two ongoing, different cases going on and, as well, a story line set in the past and set in the Arctic, which seems to be totally unrelated. While it seems convoluted at times, it all ties together in an interesting fashion and it moves along very nicely. Excellent book and excellent series. (4 stars)

message 26: by Bill (new)

Bill Starting one of my ongoing series books next, the 2nd Sonchai Jitpleecheep mystery/ thriller, Bangkok Tattoo by John Burdett. It's been awhile since I read the first one, but I remember enjoying it very much.

I read a few of the Bond books when I was in school. I started to buy them again a few years back; I liked the covers and wanted to give the series a fresh try. I've enjoyed so far.

message 41: by Bill (new)

Bill I finished The Treatment by Mo Hayder by Mo Hayder, the second Jack Caffery thriller, part of my ongoing series challenge. For all the frustrations, specifically how Caffery's personal demons tend to take over the case he is working on, it's an excellent, tense thriller. (4 stars). Trying my first Clive Cussler (Isaac Bell #1) next. I've been collecting some of the books from the various series for the past couple of years and have been looking forward to trying them. So this is my first; The Chase (Isaac Bell, #1) by Clive Cussler

message 42: by Bill (new)

Bill Finished The Chase this morning, a nicely paced, entertaining historical thriller. Isaac Bell is an interesting hero and I'm looking forward to reading more in this series. I also like the historical aspect, a very interesting time, the US in the early 1900's. I enjoyed. 3.5 stars

message 43: by Amanda (new)

I've only read the one so far but I remember watching some of the movies based on the Dirk Pitt stories and, if you like a good adventure/ thriller, then you might enjoy.

message 45: by Bill (new)

Bill Starting my 5th book in my 12 + 4 challenge, Beast In View by Margaret Millar Beast In View by Canadian mystery writer, Margaret Millar.

message 46: by Bill (new)

Bill I finished my 5th book this morning. Beast In View by Margaret Millar was a true gem. I've enjoyed a couple of her other books in the past few years, when I've been able to find copies. The Soft Talkers was one of my favourites of last year. Beast in View is another 5-star read. It's such an interesting story. I love how Millar plots her story. Is it about Helen Clarvoe, who lives alone in her apartment, isolated from the world about her? Is it about Mr. Blackshear, Helen's financial adviser, bored with his work, who she asks to help him find the woman who made the distressing call to Helen and who begins to conduct an investigation on her behalf? Or is it about Evelyn Merrick, the woman who makes the initial call to Helen and who seems to be making many calls to people that have upset her? I loved how it moved along, from the one character to the other, how the tension builds, how the story surprisingly makes a turn to the left. Excellent, excellent!! She is such a wonderful writer... Making a move to the thriller genre for my next selection, Lost Girls by Andrew Pyper.

message 47: by Bill (new)

Bill I finished Pieces of Modesty (Modesty Blaise, #6) by Peter O'Donnell , a collection of short stories by Peter O'Donnell, featuring the talented heroine, Modesty Blaise and her ever-present right-hand man and best friend, Willie Garvin. It's always fun to immerse myself in this world. (3 stars). Next up is a collection by Dorothy L. Sayers, featuring her sleuth, Lord Peter Wimsey; Lord Peter Views the Body (Lord Peter Wimsey Mysteries, #4) by Dorothy L. Sayers .

message 48: by M. (new)

M. Dobson (meg_evonne) | 109 comments I'll have to pull my Modesty Blaze books off the shelf again. I had a huge crush on Willy Gavin in high school.

message 50: by Bill (new)

Bill I finished Lord Peter Views the Body by Dorothy L. Sayers yesterday. It is a collection of short stories featuring Lord Peter Wimsey, that excellent sleuth. Dorothy Sayers has created a wonderful character in Lord Peter and each short story in this selection is excellent. I especially liked the last story as it was quite different and showed a different side to Lord Peter. Excellent read and it continued my enjoyment of this series. (4 stars). Starting the first book in the Inspector Adamsberg series next, The Chalk Circle Man by Fred Vargas by Fred Vargas
