I really struggled to understand the whole society/enemy/rising thing. I thought the book just dragged on and on. And the relationships between the characters just didn't develop the way they needed to. The poetry was beautiful but I didn't really see the point of having so much of it. Maybe others will see more in this novel then I did. I did like the ending but that was all I really liked.

see, i felt that the first time i read Crossed it was a hard book to get through. it took me longer than usual....and then when i went back to re-read it before Reached - i enjoyed it more.

When i read Reached, i have to say that i didn't share your same feeling, but i can see how you may have felt that. There was a lot that seemed really similar to other YA Dystopia that i've read, so maybe that's why i felt like it went by faster...

I agree. This book was agonizing slow to read through. Fortunately, I listened to the audio book. I agree whole heartedly that the poetry was beautiful, and the society blossoming and realizing their potential was amazing.

However, I really wished that the characters had developed a better relationship with one another too, it kinda felt more like everyone defaulted instead of truly fighting for who they wanted to be with.

Then again... because their relationships didn't develop as deeply as I think you and I would have liked, I think it shows more just how broken the society was and how little freedom they had to truly express themselves. Perhaps they only developed as far as they did because the characters didn't truly know how to feel any deeper emotions yet?

Hmmm... I think I just changed my mind. lol!

I agree that this series was a bit of a drag. I really liked Matched, but after that, these books started to fall short. I don't really care for poetry that much outside of song form, so that didn't do anything for me. I wouldn't re-read these books. They're fairly "meh."

I feel Cassia's personality is also very dull. She loves poetry but doesn't seem to define her desires, her dreams, her essence... who is she?

I absolutely hated this book! Unfortunately, I think they got worse as the trilogy went on. Matched was so good, how could it have crashed and burned so fast?

Because writers nowadays are not as talented. They have 1 good idea and they should give us 1 good book instead of 3 mediocre ones. Unless you're Tolkien.
