Kadijah Michelle (kadmich) | 2176 comments THE 2016 GOODREADS CHOICE AWARDS CHALLENGE
Duration: January 1, - December 31, 2016

Every November, the Goodreads Choice Awards come around, and readers get to vote on the best books of the year. To encourage members to read the books that may be in the running this year, we thought it'd be fun to have a challenge around this event.

Set a goal to read books published in 2016. The idea is that we, as a group, want to have read as many books in each category as we can! Please identify which category (or categories) the book falls in. These were 2015's categories (they sometimes change, so we can't guarantee that these will be the 2016 categories):

Fiction
Mystery & Thriller
Historical Fiction
Fantasy
Romance
Science Fiction
Horror
Humor
Nonfiction
Memoir & Autobiography
History & Biography
Science & Technology
Food & Cookbooks
Graphic Novels & Comics
Poetry
Debut Goodreads Author
Young Adult Fiction
Young Adult Fantasy
Middle Grade & Children's
Picture Books

When the nominations come around in 2016, we will be ready!

Update: Bella share a valuable link that may help you with this challenge. Explore will help you find popular books published in 2016 being read across Goodreads.

Kadijah Michelle (kadmich) | 2176 comments How to Participate

1. Post here telling the challenge leader that you'd like to join the challenge. You can choose your books for the challenge at the beginning, or add them as you go. You can join a challenge at any time, as long as the challenge is still active.

2. Whenever you finish a book for the challenge, post here and let the challenge leader know so they can update your progress.

Some members choose to update their original post with their progress to keep track of their challenge more easily, but make sure to also post a new message so the challenge leader knows to go look at your original post. You can look at how other members report their progress to find a strategy that works well for you.

For more information about how challenges work, check out This Thread or ask your challenge leader.

Goodreads picks books for round 1, but members can also write-in nominations. From this, books for round 2 are picked, and then the final round is chosen.

message 20: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Winter wrote: "Will this be a late challenge then? The winners this year came out just recently."

The idea is that we'll read books throughout the year that can qualify for the Choice Awards--that way, when the first round opens, we'll have read some of the books nominated.

message 21: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 4998 comments Ah:) This will be fun! Thanks Kara:) Haven't done this one before!

message 22: by Bella (new)

Bella | 193 comments Kara, I noticed that a lot of the books that ended up on the GR's Choice Awards are ranked in the "Popular Books". There's a monthly list and a yearly list. Also one of the staff of GR's made comments in the GR's Choice Award posts about the algorithm they use- popularity and ranking. I think she mentioned the cutoff was a rating of something like 3.8; it was a high 3 rating, in any case. I think that this works better for some genres, like non-fiction, and will work less well for something like romance where there are just too many books that rank in the popular list.

Link to popular books, January, 2016. You can use the drop down to get to other months:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/popula...

The yearly list for 2016 isn't up, but you can navigate there using the above link.
