Alisha ‘Priti’ Kirpalani (alisha_kirpalani) Definitely in :)

I have just written and read my own book for editing at least ten times. Does that count? Kidding :)

A Smattering of Darkness

I intend to read Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri since I enjoy both writing and reading short stories.
Any suggestions for short stories with depth by Indian authors would be appreciated.

message 23: by Shreya (last edited Jan 07, 2016 03:54AM) (new)

Shreya Choudhury Awesome thing . In for sure . :)

Wells my to-read list already had a few books concerning Indian scenarios or India as a matter .

I am currently reading a book called " Aaro Baro" ( meaning 12 more) Short Stories Collection (Bengali) by Satyajit Ray and am quite desperate about reading "The biggest Cover-up by Anuj Dhar" which should provide answers to the year old quest of what really happened to Netaji .
And then "A suitable-boy " by Vikram Seth would be my next when I am done with these.

Ankit Agarwal (citizenfour) | 50 comments Recently completed Rajdeep Sardesai's, one of the most popular Indian TV journalist, 2014: The Election that changed India. Though the book meandered a little bit, and was confusing at times, but that's what you expect when observing something as complex as India's Lok Sabha Elections. It was a very informative read and I suggest all of you to give it a try.

message 28: by Janhavi (last edited May 04, 2016 03:24AM) (new)

Janhavi | 10 comments This sounds great! How did I miss this thread earlier?

Quick question -- do I have to create a separate shelf for this challenge?
I have set myself a target of 5 books for this challenge.
Books read : 5/5

1. If God Was a Banker - One of those rare ones where you start reading, and immediately regret your choice. Wanted to quit reading, but somehow managed to finish it. Really tested my patience, and tolerance levels.

2. Asura: Tale Of The Vanquished - 3/5 stars. Interesting concept. Ravana's story. There are always two sides to a story, and history is always written by the victors.

3. Mrs Funnybones - 3/5 stars to this one. Liked it. Simple and witty, though the jokes do sound a bit crass sometimes. But I guess that's okay.

4. Hot Tea Across India - 3/5 stars. Read the Kindle edition of this book. It's basically a collection of stories from the author's Ladakh roadtrip. There's an interesting chapter - where the author's car is narrating it's own tale.

5. Roads To Mussoorie - 4/5 stars. Such a lovely book. You can easily recognise Ruskin Bond's writing - even if you had just one page from a book with no author, or book title. Charming is the word to descibe it.
Roads To Mussoorie is a lovely read, full of anecdotes about Mr Bond's travels to/from Mussoorie.
One can imagine sitting around a campfire, somewhere in the hills, listening to the stories.

---

Alright, so I've reached my goal of 5 books for the year. But I'm not going to revise the target. I'll just keep adding books to this shelf, and see how many I read this year.

Letters from an Indian Summer by Siddharth Dasgupta.
Curfewed Night by Basharat Peer

Will tick them off as I go along :)

Raman | 125 comments I have had an great start so far

1 Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End I think I gave this either a 5/5 or 4/5. Non-fiction about how care for the elderly has changed and what we should plan for. Much more enjoyable than it sounds.

Currently powering through A House for Mr Biswas. 5/5 so far

Next on my list is Two Lives
Fingers crossed I enjoy each book as much as the first two.

Am looking forward to reading Chetan Bhagat and the "marmiteness" of his reviews only makes me want to read him more.
