Eclectic Readathon 2015!

Kim wrote: "I'm going to try very hard to do this and check-in! Only snafu is that the 6am check-in is 5am my time, so I'll probably be making that update along with the 8am check-in (7am my time). From there ..."
Sounds great! Follow as well as you can! :-)

Welcome to the first Eclectic Readathon (a little late, but my Internet went out temporarily)! For the next 24 hours, may you read as much as you absolutely can! And as you read, you can check in with our handy-dandy challenge chart and earn points: https://www.goodreads.com/photo/group...
Stay tuned to this thread to encourage others (and be encouraged!), and to keep us updated with your point totals. If you want to talk about the Readathon on Facebook or Twitter, don't forget to tag it #EclecticReadathon and we'll all read and chat together.
Happy reading!

Happy reading!
so, I just realized that I inadvertently started earlier than I thought. I started almost on time because I was reading to Emily while she was on the potty.
go Kim! and, yes, I really think that's how people develop the habit of reading in the bathroom. Experts say that it helps relax the child so they can poop easier. so why break a working habit?
Agh! I had a feeling I would miss the first check in. Oh well. I got a lot more reading done last night than I thought so that's great! Have a great morning reading guys! Hope to heard from you at the next check-in!
6:00 AM: What time did you start reading today? How did you prepare?
No takers yet? Then I'm going first! I'll be starting in about five minutes (7:30) after letting myself sleep in because I haven't been feeling well since yesterday. I finally feel better now, BUT in the meantime, I had a hilarious dream that I went downstairs to the basement I don't have at 6 AM to find Suze there lifting weights, drinking tea, and reading all at the same time and scoffing at me because I didn't wake up sooner. I expect this dream to be based on truth. ;-)
Now I'll be getting my hot tea (1 point!) and getting down to some poetry that Mere lent me . See you all at 8!

Hahaha, Suze, we must have checked-in at the same time!

8:00 AM: Are you in a book club? If so, more than one?
I think most people know the answer to the first part of this question, but yes! I am definitely in the Eclectic Readers book club (in fact, I have to choose next month's books, and I might need suggestions).
I also participate in another book club which is a YA book club with local friends. I love that because it's definitely opened up some interesting reads to me, though sometimes we get some rather silly YA. It's all in good fun though.
There is an official book club at my job which I used to try and participate in, but I never had time to attend the meetings (though I read almost every book), so now I just have a non-book-club book-group with friends at work, in which whenever we read something interesting, we recommend it to each other so we can gab about it later.
Talking with friends about books, man. The best.

GoodReads says I beat you by 2 minutes. ;)
6:00 AM: What time did you start reading today? How did you prepare?
I started a little before 5:30 MST. I did all my weekly cooking chores yesterday so I didn't have to worry about it today.

haven't started reading today but I read a lot more last night than I normally allot time for. who needs clean dishes anyway? I might not get to start for another hour or so though.
I'm only in the ER book club right now and not looking to join more, but I saw a notice at the library for a discussion coming up in Jan. I was tempted to grab the book and go to meet new reading friends in the neighborhood but decided against it. I'm trying to keep my list short for the upcoming year. I used to be in two other irl groups but one never talked about the book so I ended up not reading as much and the other had a hard time meeting up.
also, do my 2 pts count if it's the same book? I might actually only have 1 point then.
8:00 AM: Are you in a book club? If so, more than one?
YES! And, YES! People think I'm crazy when I say that I'm in 3 book clubs, but it's not as daunting when the schedule for them is different.
Of course there's Eclectic Readers which meets monthyl. And the longest running one. I'm sad I'll miss next month's discussion but I'm still reading the book. This will be one of the few times I had to miss a meeting.
Then, I'm in a Mom's Book Club where we meet about every 6 weeks. And against stereotypes, we do actually talk about the book, even if it's for 30 minutes of however long we're hanging out. LoL.
Lastly, I'm in a meetup called the Nerdy 30s Ladies and I head up one of the 2 book clubs we have going there. We meet every 2 months.
This makes out for incredibly different opinions and views and I love it.

Haha, Suze, I guess I'm just too slow a typist.
And yes, Kim! Totally counts if it's the same book. The rules for Readathon are a lot looser than Bingo because the goal is different. :-)

Hi, everyone! I got a little reading done last night, but I've been feeling under the weather and will probably have to spend a good amount of time today doing things I should have done yesterday, so I'm not sure how much reading I will get done. :(
But, with the book I'm trying to finish today and the next book I want to start, I think I could still get in a few points!

I'm sorry you're feeling under the weather Meredith! That's never fun. Hope it's nothing serious and you feel better soon.
I forgot about George Day (the Brinckerhoffs are in town) so I'll be with Emily all day. This morning and nap time will be the big chunks of time I'll be able to fit in serious reading.

Reading Challenge Points:
- A book that is also on a friend's to-read list +1
- A book by an author you never read before +1
- When a language is spoke that the protagonist doesn't understand +2
- When the protagonist dreams +1
Total points so far: 6
So.... you can get a lot of points reading The Sculptor. Haha!

I'm reading the tipping point so not sure this would turn into a good fanfic. here's my best shot:
"Broken Windows" - a tale about a graffiti artist with syphilis and a weird obsession wanting to fight crime on sesame street
10:00 AM: Fanfic title for the book you are currently reading
Can you Fanfic title a book of poetry? If so... Margaret Atwood's Selected Poems II: 1976 - 1986 becomes...
Lines about Snakes and Women.

6:00 AM: I actually woke up at about 4:00 AM this morning and started reading but then fell back asleep around 4:30 AM. When I finally got up at 9:45 AM I started reading again. I'm multitasking with reading and online shopping for Christmas gift ideas. I'll be heading out later to finish up my shopping and gift wrapping. I didn't really prepare for this but I saw it on Sue's FB status and decided to join in. My nook was dead so I grabbed my iPad, found a free book, and decided to test it out. So far I like the book and I have really enjoyed reading for hours yesterday and today.
8:00 AM: I am not in any book clubs... well I guess I just joined this one so I'm looking forward to that!
10:00 AM: Not going to lie, I'm not sure how to give a book a fanfic title. I am reading The Game by Terry Chott
Ok, and now to figure out how many points I have...
- A book that takes place in a place or goes to a city you want t o visit +2
- A book by an author you've never read before +1
- Reading in a place you've never read before +2 (technically I can move from chair to chair and say this all day long since we just moved in but I'll stick with the house in general as being one new place! lol)
- Reading with a warm beverage +1
- When the protagonist dreams +1
So that is 7 pts so far :)

Points update:
A book with an animal as a main character +1 (um, it's in the title)
A book you've owned for more than a year, but have never read +1 (this book came with me from Florida!)
Reading with a warm beverage +1 (mmm, coffee...)
So 3 more points for me! I'm at 5 points total.
Maybe I need to start The Sculptor today and rack up those big points!
Also - Mere I hope you feel better. Amanda, welcome to the readathon!
12:00 PM: Write about a song that reminds you of the book you're reading.
Okay, I just finished the book I've been reading all morning, so my song choice is... "And another one bites the dust..." :-)
Actually, the poems I've been reading were really interesting, and I really enjoyed them. I need a song that is very expressive of textures and colors and very earthy. So whichever song that is!

fail on my part for the 12:00 challenge. I've been out/and still out with Emily so all my my brain capacity is taken up at the moment.
GUYS! DID YOU KNOW THERE'S AN OPTION TO HAVE THE NEWEST COMMENTS APPEAR ON TOP?!? I just discovered this
2:00 check-in: summarize book in a tweet
Woman tries to find actual killer by investigating her past. Killer is still out sending her black-eyed Susans.

OOH, FANCY.
And Kim, I think you're talking about "You've Got a Friend in Me" ?
2:00 PM: If you were going to summarize this book in a tweet, what would you say?
I've switched to Moby Dick: or, the White Whale now, so thus far the Twitter summary is:
A man in search of adventure unexpectedly befriends a cannibal & the two decide to go whaling, despite much ominous foreshadowing.

I would count that.
And I figured out my 12:00 Check-in. I'm still on Black-Eyed Susans, so the song is Every Move You Make.

4:00 PM: What's going on in the background while reading?
Right now, the background is my husband playing Assassin's Creed. He says he likes it, so maybe after I catch up on all my reading, I'll take a crack at it. Earlier, he was whistling and that was really distracting, but all these NPCs yelling at his character is somehow less so? My head's a weird place.

Kids run away with talking horses. Looking for magical land. Beware lions afoot.

Silence! Hubs is playing on his phone. L is napping.

Having switched to The Sculptor, I think I'll re-title it: Meet the Less Successful Joe Black.
