2017 Reading Challenge discussion

I am hoping I can read some of the books I already have on my shelves in the challenge this year rather than buying more or getting from the library. May be easier said than done but I am going to challenge myself with that too!!!

Just so many books I want to read and so little time

So many books will fit the categories. So, you might end up completing most of the challenge, just by going through your TBR pile! I know I am.

Yes, I am going to TRY to limit my book purchases also! Although I have already bought one book the other day specifically for this challenge! Oops! I am also going to try and use the library whenever possible. As of now, I can probably complete about 80 percent of the challenge with books I already own.

My NYE resolution this year was to buy a maximum of five books this year, plus three at the annual book sale in February. Considering that I bought over 100 last year, that's going to be a change in my habits. On the other hand, I really need to work through my shelves :)

Wow...I would have trouble doing that! Good luck. I think maybe I could live with only buying ONE for every THREE I read from my stack.

Oh, it will be torture. On the other hand, my savings will thank me later :) I expect my Amazon wishlist to be quite big at the end of the year. I pre-empted this by ordering ten books these last few days of 2015.

But yeah, I have silly amounts of books and I need to read them. I'm actually considering banning myself from the city library as well, but that's probably overkill.

I'll definetely be keeping to my TBR list to complete the challenge! Last year I added tons of new books to it and even purchased a good number of them, so I have an insane amount of books to go through. I can easily complete most of the challenge with them and I'll only add a new book if I really don't have anything that fits the category among my book pile.

If I bought new books, I'd be broke. I have found these to be the best ways to get books for minimal price: 1. (best website outside this one) Paperbackswap! I buy books at garage sales but my fav is at thrift stores. I have found brand new hardbacks at the Dollar store. No matter what, buy the books for 25 cents at a thriftstore - buy any and all of them, then post them on PBS where you can trade them for books you actually want. Even adding postage for PBS, I never pay more than $4 for a book (unless it is extremely large/heavy) and I often obtain brand new books I can keep or exchange as the mood strikes. I call thrift/second hand stores, "book stores".

You can also try Thriftbooks.com. They sell used books at low prices. You can create a wish list. Shipping is free for orders over $10. If you create an account they will occasionally email discount codes. This is how I get a lot of the books I want.

To keep costs down I have resolved to learn how to find them through libraries on line (Kindle free or other resource) and/or find them at the nice used bookstore I have nearby. I will consider buying a few used via Amazon.

I almost never buy books anymore....I enter lots of giveaways, get free books on Kindle, borrow books, ebooks and audiobooks from the library, and am part of several promotional tour groups which provide books to read and review. I have so many books saved on my Kindle now that I'll probably never have to buy another book in my life! LOL

I worked out last night that I have enough books to fit at least two thirds of the categories in our reading list, not including the wildcards and, as I haven't read any of them before, I'm determined not to buy any new books in 2016. At all.

I've started a swapping shelf at work, will visit libraries, borrow from friends and family and will, of course, happily accept books for my birthday.

I'm hoping to move home soon, so my finances (and the movers) will thank me! :)

Bookmooch is also a good resource for trading books, in case anyone needs to!

Ohhhh, I've never heard of this! I'll have to give it a whirl!

All this talk about not buying books has me itching to go and buy books...hmmm, I guess it's not supposed to work that way though.

One week in and no new books. Well, aside from the ten I ordered at Christmas that arrived in the last few days :) But those count towards 2015, not 2016!

Thrift stores! One near me has great books for 99 cents. I also buy books from my local library. They sell off the extra copies of brand new hard covers from 1-2$.

I bought a stack of books yesterday from two thrift stores,joined book mooch and should have 3 on the way soon. If anyone is interested in following my bookish account on Instagram you can find me under whimsy_reader :)

I made them mistake of going in to Foyles (bookshop) yesterday *facepalm* but managed to restrict myself to the one book which was half price...

You just described why I make myself stay out of bookstores. I used to be an addict! I just discovered Thriftbooks on line and now the craving has started again.
