Our young-person friendly pick this month is a funny tale that blends star-gazing, sports, and a three-eyed alien girl on a secret mission. Grab this one and use it to assimilate your kids.



Here's the synopsis:

Things are looking up for Tyler Sato (literally!) as he and his friends scan the sky for a star named after him by his Tokyo cousins on his eleventh birthday. Ordinary stars stay in one place, but Ty’s is streaking toward Earth. Soon the world is talking about TY SATO, the doomsday asteroid, and life is turned upside down for Ty Sato, the boy, who would rather be playing hoops in the driveway.

Meanwhile, aboard a silver spaceship heading for Earth, M’Frozza, a girl with three eyes and five nose holes, is on a secret mission. M’Frozza is the captain of Mrendaria’s Galaxy Games team, and she is desperate to save her world from a dishonorable performance in the biggest sporting event in the universe.

What will happen when Ty meets M’Frozza? Get ready for the most important event in human history—it’ll be off the backboard, around the rim, and out of this world!

I loved this book! I think it's a perfect book for kids. Not only is it fun (and funny) but it also presents a wonderful message of peace and tolerance. There's not just aliens but different cultures and ethnic groups, and very strong girl characters! Sure hope he comes out with the followup.

I just pulled the trigger on the hardback for my son, who is about to turn 10, for a birthday present. I see Greg Fishbone's bio lists him as from New England. Maybe he'll come to BOSKONE in two weeks so I can get it autographed? :-) Hoping to get my little guy to graduate out of the Goosebumps books and away from stupid Minecraft 24:7.

What is the deal with this Minecraft? I'm beginning to think it's a drug...

I'm not planning to attend Boskone but will have a number of bookstore appearances around the release of Galaxy Games #2. Where are you located?

Hi, Kirsten. Thanks for your kind review.

I have two daughters, so I have very much incentive to provide girls with positive role models in science fiction and sports fiction. And I feel strongly that a team that represents Earth should represent ALL of Earth, or at least as many diverse parts of it as I can put into a book.

Near as I can figure, Minecraft combines the appeal of building with Lego blocks with the appeal of smashing Lego blocks with a pick-axe.
