SFF Readalongs led by Kitty G discussion

This is the thread for discussion of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell chapters 34-44 (inclusive). Please feel free to discuss all the chapters up to this point but don't leave any spoilers for other sections of the plot! I look forward to seeing all the wonderful discussion.

How are you enjoying the pacing?
Do the footnotes work for you?
What about the illustrations included now and then?
Do you like the plot so far?

I keep setting down and then coming back to this book. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I tire of it. Right now, I am finding it very charming and witty; I love the language, and I think the footnotes are very clever. At other times, it seems a bit too shallow, without any admirable protagonists. I hope I can get through it! I do recognize that the book has a lot going for it. Anyone else have thoughts along this line?

I feel exactly the same way Susan. I really like sections of the story, and other times I find myself unable to concentrate enough to get through it at all. It's a tough one to read for a long period of time I think, but it also seems not to work so well when I keep dipping in and out... I'm definitely having a bit of a battle with myself to get this one done in time! :/
