This simply isn't a good era for the success of novels, authors, readership, reading audiences, or even basic literacy. it's just not a book-enriched society anymore.
What intellect--what interest in the world--can you ask, or expect from people who carry little personal TVs around with them and look down into them every few seconds?
Reading, learning, understanding, ideas, communicating...its all dead. over. finished. Killed off, by rampant over-individualization. Everyone is in their own little personal, airtight, cocoon.
The best thing that can happen is a sunspot or EMP blast, then people might start reading again.
