The Maze Runner Series question

I personally think because the author managed to combine interesting characters with an interesting plot/situation. Also, Thomas, the narrator has a special position in this group of people, yet is very down to earth and easy to identify with. Thomas also talks just the right amount about what is going on inside him vs what is going on around him.

I would be really interested in 1)people who didn't like The Maze Runner (and their opinion & reasons) and 2)recommendations to great and similar books!
