Marta (gezemice) | 78 comments I am a software engineer/developer. Books I read with software people as main characters:
Neuromancer - the main guy is a hacker
Off to Be the Wizard - silly nerdy fluff with a programmer as main character
Snow Crash - hacker
Lisbeth Salander is a hacker in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and its sequels

Books I have not read:
I have The Innovators: How a Group of Hackers, Geniuses and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution - it is partially about Ada Lovelace, who was the first programmer
Spell or High Water is the sequel to Off To Be a Wizard

Mike | 443 comments Snow Crash is one of my favorite books.

Neuromancer is my choice for the Science Fiction Novel prompt.

Emily S (emcrypted) | 10 comments I've been thinking about using Ada's Algorithm, a book on Ada Lovelace, for this one. Although I just got sad looking at its mediocre reviews :(

Marta (gezemice) | 78 comments Emily: Oh I checked it out, reviews are indeed sad. Maybe try Innovators instead? Walter Isaacson is the author of the highly acclaimed Steve Jobs biography.

I was actually thinking of reading Steve Jobs for this, not the same profession but same industry.

Mike: I liked Snow Crash, too. Neuromancer has some very interesting ideas about boundaries between human and artificial mind, and an interesting world complete with its own language - but I found it a bit dated and jaded. Still a worthwhile read, though.

Marta (gezemice) | 78 comments Cress from the Lunar Chronicles is about a hacker girl - although third in a series (which I enjoyed a lot).
One of the main characters in Attachments is an IT security guy, also close enough.

Robyn | 1 comments Today B&N posted a list of 6 YA books for girls who code. I haven't read any yet but some seem to have decent reviews! http://www.barnesandnoble.com/blog/te...

I ended up reading The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage: The (Mostly) True Story of the First Computer for this prompt. It was a lot of fun to read (and it also/alternatively counts a graphic novel).

And +1 for both Steve Jobs and The Innovators

Marta (gezemice) | 78 comments Robyn: awesome ideas, I will have to check them out. Illuminae looks really good! And I think I must read The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage: The (Mostly) True Story of the First Computer. It looks yummy!

Debbie | 23 comments Illuminae is so good! No spoilers but it is literally like nothing I have read. My son, my husband and my son read it. All of us loved it.

Heather L (wordtrix) | 780 comments The Turing Hopper series by Donna Andrews features computers/programmers. First in the series is You’ve Got Murder. I have also read book two, Click Here For Murder.
