The biography is largely epistolary, with Gaskell using letters between Charlotte, her family, friends, publishers and others to provide the narrative of her life. How does this format work for you? Do you think it makes the biography more reliable/insightful/realistic? Or….?

Which of the people in Charlotte’s life stood out the most for you and how deeply do you think they influenced her life? Her family members? Tabby? Her friends such as Miss Wooler? Literary personalities and publishers? Her husband?
