P.R. Garcia | 6 comments Europa Awakenings
Hi. My name is PR Garcia and I'm new to the group. I am the author of the Europa Series, the first of which is EUROPA Awakenings. It's a new take on Atlantis. I was told female sci-fi writers were rare, but I see by the members' photos there are more of you out there. Any tips you can offer on how to get reviews or boosts sales would be greatly appreciated.

I started writing three years ago and am currently writing book #10. I've gotten great reviews on the books, especially the first one, EUROPA Awakenings. It currently has a 4.6 star rating on Amazon and a 5 star rating on Goodreads.

Here's a little video I did on YouTube about the story line

If you'd like to check out my work, my website is prgarcia1.com

Looking forward to reading all you guys have to say.

Janet Garber (janetgarber) | 1 comments Hi. I've published some light sci-fi/humorous short stories inspired by my childhood watching of Twilight Zone and love for Margaret Atwood, Ursula LeGuin, Phillip K Dick, Jack Finney, and others.

Just published non sci-fi novel, Dream Job, Wacky Adventures of an HR Manager, www.lulu.com.

Carolyn O'Neal (carolynoneal) | 3 comments Hi, I'm new. I like Margaret Atwood's level of Science Fiction. I grew up on Star Trek, Star Wars, etc.

I like science fiction that makes me think. Look forward to getting ideas on what I should read next.

message 4: by P.R. (new)

P.R. Garcia | 6 comments Hi, Margaret. Welcome. I'm new too - just joined a few days ago. I'm a huge Star Trek fan. My friends love telling the story about me refusing to go to the high school football games because I had to stay home and watch Star Trek. Hey, we didn't have ways to record them in those days. You either watched it or missed it.

Did you see the new Star Wars trailer? All new characters again? What is Disney thinking? It's supposedly a spin off.

If you're looking for a new book to read, check out my book EUROPA Awakenings. It has a 5 star rating on Goodreads. But I must warn you - you won't be able to put it down.

message 5: by Anne (new)

Anne (annedpt) | 1 comments Hi, my name's Anne. My love for scifi came a bit late, but now that I got into it, it's really hard to let it go! Like I said, I'm not yet that well-versed in the genre. I'm still exploring more books. Oh, and I also write some scifi short fiction.

message 6: by Connie (last edited Apr 11, 2016 11:29AM) (new)

Connie Lacy (connielacy) My name is Connie Lacy. I published three novels last year (I had a backlog, not a super fast writer.) "The Shade Ring," is Sci-fi and Climate Fiction - set 100 years in the future when oceans have risen along with the temperature. I'm writing two sequels to make it a trilogy. My other two published books both have "magical" or "Sci-fi" elements - "The Time Telephone" and "Visionsight: a Novel."

Barbara Chepaitis (chepaitis) | 1 comments Hi there -

I'm an author in SF, mainstream, and paranormal. You could say I'm bitextual, and transgenre. :) My SF series, the 'fear' series, features Jaguar Addams, who works in a future criminal justice system, rehabbing criminals by using her telepathic skills to make them face the fears that drove their crimes. Some titles include The Fear Principle, A Lunatic Fear, and A Strangled Cry of Fear. You get the idea, right? I'm sure you do. Here's a link to find out more about Jaguar and her antics. http://wildsidepress.com/authors-c/ch...

message 8: by E.M. (new)

E.M. Swift-Hook | 2 comments I have loved science-fiction since childhood. I grew up reading everything from H.G. Wells to Poul Anderson and, of course, the female greats including Ursula K. Le Guin and Marion Zimmer Bradley.

Female authors, characters - and readers - have always been underrepresented in the genre and I think it is great to be able to celebrate all three. I am hoping this group will be doing that and look forward to discussions here.

message 9: by Jagadeeshwari (new)

Jagadeeshwari (njaga27423) Hi everyone ...I'm a bigggggg fan of sci fi books by female authors and especially with strong ,action female protagonist.. I'm pathetically addicted to sci fi books but I'm not an author. I'm just a biiigggg fan.

message 10: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Humphrey (phreygirl) | 1 comments Hey folks, I rarely get on Goodreads because it's so overwhelming and I don't know where to start. But this looked intimate enough. My love of scifi came late as well. I read George Orwell as a kid and loved it, and picked him up again as an adult. I write scifi now, and it's different, focusing on vivid, young black characters who grow into hidden capabilities. I'm releasing books 2 and 3 in my series now. I look forward to finally getting to know some other unique ladies.

message 11: by Lizzie (last edited Jun 19, 2016 05:39AM) (new)

Lizzie | 21 comments I joined this group a while back, but I don't recall an "I am new" thread, so thought I should introduce myself.

I fell in love with science fiction when I was 12 and discovered Andre Norton in our school library. I visited my friend down the street so I could watch original Star Trek reruns because it wasn't allowed in our house. When I was 17 I obtained Dune and read it 3x that summer.

I read all kinds of sci-fi, though military battles and apocalypse stories are starting to bore me in the genre. I am a fan of Anne McCaffrey, Elizabeth Moon, Lois McMaster Bujold, and many more of the older male and female greats from the 50s onward. I also read many new authors, especially when their first book is free on Amazon. As a result, last year I fell for Michael R. Hicks In Her Name Series and Joseph Lallo's Big Gemini series. I am awaiting Vera Nazarian's 3rd Atlantis Grail book and Autumn Kalquist's latest Fractured Era series book.

I am not a creative writer, just a reader who is on the disability list and live alone so I spend a lot of time with my kindle library.

Claudia LeBoeuf (claudial2) | 3 comments Hi, my name is Claudia LeBoeuf. I joined the group a couple months ago, but hadn't made a comment yet. Hi Lee, I used to be an aerospace engineer too. I've just finished writing my first book. Still trying to figure out what to do with it. I'd love to hear about other women's experiences with the self-publishing/marketing thing.

message 13: by Paula (last edited Jun 26, 2016 04:44PM) (new)

Paula | 14 comments New to this discussion, a science fiction reader since age 14, writer since age 16 (when I published my first sf story in a small magazine), a demanding reader, one of the members of the science fiction microstories contest (writers) group on Goodreads, professional editor, traditionally published author, and so on.
Looking for leads on wonderful books and authors I've not yet read, and for serious sf discussion!

message 14: by Claudia (new)

Claudia LeBoeuf (claudial2) | 3 comments Lee,

I just got Merlin 2035 on Kindle Unlimited. I'll try to get to it over the next week and let you know what I think (for what it's worth).

Darren Beyer | 3 comments Hi,

I'm new to the group and am posting to introduce myself. Though not a woman, my book Casimir Bridge features a woman protagonist in an action role. I've had a number of strong women influencing my life and writing a strong woman character just seemed natural to me. I am working on the second book of the series now where she continues her exploits.

Steen Jones (steenjones) Hi everyone, I'm Steen Jones and just joining Goodreads. I've loved reading my entire life, but just figured out my love for writing. I have my first novel coming out in January called The Door Keeper. It's a fantasy about a single mom. Because we mom still need some magical adventure in our lives... :)

I would love some recommendations on good sci-fi/fantasy for YA or adults!

message 18: by Robert (new)

Robert Kenney (robert_kenney) | 1 comments Congratulations on your upcoming debut novel, Steen!

As for recommendations, you might like the Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children series by Ransom Riggs or the Kricket series by Amy Bartol.

message 19: by Steen (new)

Steen Jones (steenjones) Thanks Robert! I'll look into them. :)

message 21: by Shawnz (new)

Shawnz T (shawnzt) | 5 comments Hello fellow Scifi fans. Like many of you I love Star Trek and Star Wars. The first real novel I read was DUNE. The way Frank Herbert describes the characters drew me into the Scifi reading world. I love a good character who is faced with something no one has faced before. I am not too much into the details of science if the story and the characters are good, but the science has to be interesting. I also love Octavia Butler for this reason. There are so many good Scifi reads out there I can't wait to get recommendations for new authors to read. I also enjoy the weekly broadcast of Radio lab on national public radio. I write a lot as a hobby so I don't get on social media much. This group seems like a good way to stay connected with fellow readers who love what I love. I look forward to the group
discussions.

Monisha Menon | 5 comments Hello fellow scifi authors and readers, My affair with science fiction began at the age of 7 when i first got to see empire strikes back (makes me slightly old but hey ..). I just finished writing a scifi short story and its in the process of being edited. Would love to hear some feedback on its synopsis too (will post in appropriate thread).

Look forward to reading and learning.

message 23: by Steen (new)

Steen Jones (steenjones) Monisha, I'd love to give you some feedback on your synopsis if you'd take a look at mine when the time comes :)

message 24: by Monisha (new)

Monisha Menon | 5 comments Sounds like a plan Steen. I just finished reading - how to write a sizzling synopsis by Bryan Cohen and t helps.

message 25: by Susan (new)

Susan (shbeaty) | 1 comments Just found this group today, and it sounds like a place in Goodreads that will mesh with what I'm reading these days. I find that I'm gravitating to women authors and really like women main characters. Last weekend I binge read Elizabeth Moon's Vatta's War series, and I'm looking forward to other reads with strong women.

You'll likely enjoy anything by Elizabeth Moon, then. May also try Julie Czerneda and Catherine Asaro (for authors who make me feel dumb, but I love their books/stories)

message 27: by Kara (new)

Kara | 1 comments Hey everyone, just wanted to introduce myself. I have been into sci-fi since the first time I watched Star Wars. I also loved watching Star Trek. I read every Star Wars book I could get my hands on. Then of course I read 1984 and Fahrenheit 451 but I found my favorite sci-fi author when I read a little book called Ender's Game. I devoured all of Card's books and short stories in less than a month!
I've always been a big reader and usually get through 1-2 books a week.

When I read Harry Potter to my boys was when I decided to seriously sit down and try my hand at writing a full length book. I had tried and failed countless times before. But it was the way HP made my kids excited about reading that truly motivated me.

I have since written a full length YA Sci_Fi book that's part of a planned 8 book series. I'm querying that one out now.

And I've also written a really fun novella that's a mix of mystery/suspense with a touch of sci-fi and a sprinkling of chick-lit. It's called The Maladroit and I've put that out under my small press The Writing Piazza. It's on ebook and in paperback form if you'd like to check it out, I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts.

I have a blog too with a ton of resources for authors if anyone is interested you can check that out. www.thewritingpiazza.com/blog/

Thanks for reading!

message 28: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Ross (httpgoodreadscomhannah_ross) | 1 comments Hello! I'm very happy to find this group for sci-fi women authors, since sci-fi is still (at least to my observation) perceived as a man-dominated literary field.

A bit about me: I have been writing ever since I could hold a pen. My projects were dismissed as "scribbles" by my mother, who always encouraged me to get serious and move on to some "real" work. I failed to listen to this advice, and have recently signed a book deal on my dystopia/sci-fi novel, Wild Children, the main theme of which is government seizing control of reproductive rights.

You can read more about me on my blog:

I look forward to participating in this group!

Diana (dianatouille) Hello to everyone. My name is Diana (nice to meet you!) and I'm a totally amateur reader of sci-fi, but I recently discovered that I do love the gender so I decided to join this group in order to improve my knowlegde about it and learn all I can. Thank for your time and I'll gladly hope for suggestions.

OurLordOfTheUnderground I tell all amateur sci fi refers if you like sci fi and humor read hitchhikers guide to the galaxy

message 31: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Moorer (sherrithewriter) Greetings all! I can't believe I just found this group. Then again, I've been pretty busy working on my own scifi trilogy, so that's why I'm in and out so much.

I'm Sherri Fulmer Moorer.I write mystery and scifi, and am turning more toward the scifi now. Scifi is certainly harder and more challenging to write, but it's also worth it. Unfortunately, it's also harder to market. I thought it would be easier to find readers in scifi because it's a more targeted market than mystery, but I'm finding it's actually harder to find readers since I published Progenitor in April. The advice I keep finding says you won't find readers for a series until Book 2 releases (which will likely be next summer with the way it's progressing), but I keep trying. We'll see! If any of you know any magic for snagging reads/reviews, let us know!

message 32: by Alex (new)

Alex Ankarr (alexankarr) | 1 comments Hi! I'm Alex, I write mostly romance (including paranormal), but I love science fiction. Joanna Russ, Le Guin, Andre Norton, Doris Lessing, all amazing writers in my book and I know the list only begins there. Any more contemporary recommendations welcome, as I really need to catch up a bit!

Andria (stone_mavrek) | 8 comments Hi. My name is Beverlee. And I was born a couple centuries too early. LOVE Science Fiction, always have, alway will. Gifted myself with a Kindle for my last birthday and have been burning up the Sci-Fi titles ever since. Finally thought I'd challenge myself to write one--and make the Villan a Female, for a twist. Have just completed Chapter 8 and decided it was time to get my feet wet by joining a group. Sooo, "muah" to everybody!

message 35: by Sidra (new)

Sidra Sheikh (sfsheikh) | 4 comments Hi everyone, I just saw this thread although I joined about a month ago. I have always loved sci fi series such as fire fly and farscape, star trek and star wars movies. My favourite sci fi authors are douglas adams, terry pratchett, piers anothony etc. I had always thought I would write a novel one day in the hazy future and about a year ago, I finally sat down to do it. To my own surprise what came out of my head was a humorous sci fi manuscript! I'm planning to self publish on amazon kdp and pod in a month's time as I've been told humour is hard to sell. I would love to know if any of you are interested in receiving free copies. Pl send your details and I'll send print or kindle versions your way. I'd really appreciate it if you could review it on goodreads or amazon once you've read it. The novel is called "The Light Blue Jumper" and is the first sci fi novel by a Pakistani woman. This is the facebook page link: https://m.facebook.com/thelightblueju...

Thanks
Sidra

message 36: by Heather R. (new)

Heather R. Hello all,
I admit to joining the group just to get new ideas of what to read next. My favorite female authors are Sherri S. Tepper, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and Robin Hobb, but I have many more that I like and am interested in, especially those considered literate (perhaps Sherri S. Tepper is?). I have just started The Fifth Gate by N.K. Jemison, and provided I can keep my husband from stealing it, hope to finish it soon.

Eventually I intend/want/plan on writing in this genre..I am practicing with a few YA ideas right now.

I look forward to seeing what others are interested in!

message 37: by Caryl (new)

Caryl Barnes | 2 comments I'm also just starting to read The Fifth Gate and am excited about it and her earlier series. What intrigues me about her is the rave reviews about her world building skill.

message 38: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Salisbury | 8 comments Hi all, I only just joined goodreads, although I've been on in the past to find books I might like. I've been a sci-fi fan all my life - I was raised in a family that loves anything with the word 'star' in it (star wars, star trek, stargate, battlestar galactica...).
I saw this group and had to join, as I love strong female characters in novels. I've just finished writing my first and am waiting to hear back from publishers. In the meantime, I want to see what else is out there and look forward to your recommendations.

Hi Sidra,
Are you self-publishing? I almost wish I'd gone directly that route. It's so scary waiting for news, and I still have weeks to go, as I only just sent it in a week ago. Humorous sci-fi sounds like my kind of book. It's how I got into the written genre. I'd love to read it.
I have to warn you that mine is based on a Bible story (Moses adrift in an asteroid belt and found by an alien instead of a river and Egyptian princess) and is fairly faith-based. If you'd still like to read it and give me some feedback, that would be great. If not, no worries. I know it's not for everyone.
Nice 'meeting' you.
Lauren

message 41: by Niki (new)

Niki Pogaridou | 1 comments Hello everyone!I am new to the group. When I read the name of the group I thought of Ursula Le Guin, one of my favorite authors.I am fan of sci-fi and fantasy books so any other suggestions about female authors would really interest me. Have a nice day!

message 42: by Íbláum (new)

Íbláum Skugga | 1 comments I wrote a book that I realize goes well in this thread.
http://www.blurb.com/b/7372357-tannin...
It's basically about this spaceship fleet of women that travel the galaxy and do it in style, via using tanning booths and beds.
Have a quick flip through it if you've got the time and the passion for women in spaceships.

message 43: by Ginny (new)

Ginny O. | 2 comments Hi everyone, I'm Ginny O. I fell in love with science fiction in middle school when a friend introduced me to Star Wars. I don't think she quite knew what she was doing honestly. I devoured Asimov and Herbert and dug into Bradbury. I love Robert Asprin's sense of humor. Firefly, Stargate and Seaquest DSV are all things I've enjoyed. I also enjoy writing. I've self published a book about werewolves who ride on floating motorcycles and rescue people. Obviously, I don't take myself too seriously.

message 46: by Linda (new)

Linda Klein I'm new here. I just finished Jemisin's The Fifth Season, and I came here inspired to find more women sci-fi authors. I've loved Ursula K. LeGuin since childhood, and I am a fan of Octavia Butler's work too. Plus I love sci-fi in general. So I'm looking forward to digging into the threads here and finding new authors to love!

message 47: by Jan (new)

Jan (jan130) Hi, I'm Jan from Australia. I'm a long time sci-fi reader, although I also love historical romance, contemporary romance, some paranormal romance, some detective fiction and some fantasy as well. Examples of sci-fi writers I enjoy are Ursula Leguin (both her fantasy and sci-fi), Ann McCaffrey (although some of her books seem a bit dated now), Frank Herbert (the legendary Dune books), Neal Stephenson, Alastair Reynolds.
It seems this group is about the depiction or discussion of women in sci-fi which I've always found interesting. For e.g one of the things I love about Al Reynolds' books is his terrific, strong, kicka$$ female characters. These pop up in most of his books, like Pushing Ice, Terminal World, or the revelation space books.
Sci-fi books I have enjoyed more recently include: Grass by Sheri Tepper. Whilst I haven't loved all of her books, this one is a standout. The Last Hour of Gann by R. Lee Smith. This was a book I read on a rec from someone else. What a surprise. That rare beast - a sci-fi romance that's not schlocky and is well written. It's long, harrowing, violent in parts, but ultimately uplifting. A superb book, which addresses some serious, big sc-fi concepts and ideas.
I'm looking forward to reading and sharing in the discussions on this group.

message 48: by Jan (new)

Jan (jan130) Oops. I forgot to add another fav author with strong female protagonists is Jack McDevitt and his 'Hutch' series about Priscilla Hutchins. Love those books. Hutch is a great character. The books are an interesting combination of sci-fi, adventure, and (future) archaeology and history. The first book, The Engines of God, is the best place to start.

Mishiko Sato | 3 comments Hi, my name is Mishiko, I´m a sf-horror reader . Years ago I discovered the work of Octavia E. Butler who mix sf and slavery topics. Since then I am really fan of everything wich involve these themes. I would be very thanksful to receive some suggestion of really good sf readings.

message 50: by Jan (new)

Jan (jan130) Hi Mishiko. Have you tried the books of R. Lee Smith? Her most well-known book is The Last Hour of Gann, but some of her books definitely fit into the sci-fi/horror category. Be warned though - there is some full on sex and violence in her books.
