Jarvis In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.

Written for J.R.R. Tolkien’s own children, The Hobbit met with instant critical acclaim when it was first published in 1937. Now recognized as a timeless classic, this introduction to the hobbit Bilbo Baggins, the wizard Gandalf, Gollum, and the spectacular world of Middle-earth recounts of the adventures of a reluctant hero, a powerful and dangerous ring, and the cruel dragon Smaug the Magnificent.

I'll start it after few days. From 7th of the June, to be precise. It's my first time I'm reading anything by Tolkien. Yaayyy....excited. I haven't watched the movies yet.
Who else gonna join us?

Ahh, I just didn't watch them. Simple :P
Actually, since I've started reading books, I don't watch movies before the book. I know they are great movies, and I'll watch after reading the books :)

message 15: by Jason (new)

Jason Hubbard | 29 comments I read it in high school after reading TLOTR. Quite imaginative with many classic elements such as the vain dragon, a sword named after an insect's butt, and Gandalph's classic smartass response to "Good morning!" The Goblin King seemed like an afterthought, though.

Diptarup Ghosh Dastidar | 83 comments I am in... Read another one by Tolkien... Trust me, you will feel as if Middle Earth is a real place and you cannot make fun of it as a fantasy. Just started the Hobbit! The map on the last page is really cool. It folds out so you can read the book and see the map simultaneously without having to change the page! :D

message 17: by Nitesh (new) - added it

Nitesh Kanthaliya | 56 comments Did anyone read the Foreword? TLDR, but looking for some comments.. Specially about the unpublished page from the manuscript.

J.R.R. Tolkien's creativity has no bounds. See the drawings that he has made on the paper _/\_

Oh, I see; I thank you, for with this much info I could keep from trying my hand at that something which I' ve neither been used to nor wish to.

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm starting today. Hope I won't be bored.

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

It feels like a children's book. Plus his writing, really, reminds me of C.S. Lewis.

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

The starting is nice. When did you start feeling bored, Manasa?

message 26: by Sundara (new)

Sundara Gandhi (bookaholictalks) | 553 comments Is it a slow read?

It's really worth reading if you persist. I think some people expect the style to be on the same level as The Lord of the Rings. LOTR was written 17 years later and was a much darker and complex tale that explored many themes. The Hobbit was written for Tolkien's children and is a simpler tale than the high fantasy with intricate world building that LOTR became.

Rebecca | 89 comments I just started it and find it amusing. ....

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm 20% done. I'm reading it slowly (a little busy nowadays) and really liking it.

@Rebecca- How much done?

The trolls chapter is over. They have just left the Last Homely House :)

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

I feel like a twelve year boy. I would never stop reading children books, even if I'm hundred :P

message 36: by Sundara (new)

Sundara Gandhi (bookaholictalks) | 553 comments Hehe. Same here. I am loving it,it's like a bedtime story;)

Rebecca | 89 comments I am only 7 % done. Going slow. ...

message 38: by Sundara (new)

Sundara Gandhi (bookaholictalks) | 553 comments Yeah. It's not exactly fast paced. We have to just keep reading to know how it ends...

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

Done!! 5 stars. Loved it. Too much excited for LOTR now :)

Sundara Gandhi (bookaholictalks) | 553 comments Wow. Great Arpit! I've paused it for now!!:( kinda of in a reading slump...

message 43: by Niki (new) - rated it 2 stars

Niki Pogaridou | 19 comments Hello everyone! My first time posting. I'd like to say that I found the Hobbit a book for kids rather than adults. It has a nice storytelling and Tolkin feels(sounds/reads) like a storyteller. But I can also understand why some find him boring. I confess I got a bit bored reading the Lord of the Rings (and I am a big fan of fantasy fiction).

message 44: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello Niki,
Actually, The Hobbit IS a book for children, written for author's own children. Can't say anything about LOTR :)
