The second semi-annual Eclectic Readathon begins tonight!

A reminder of how to play/read along:
From 8 pm EST tonight to 8 pm EST tomorrow, the ‪EclecticReaders‬ are going to be reading as much as possible! Ebooks? Audiobooks? Old school paper and print? All of it counts as reading, as long as it's a book!

Any time you check in, any reading you do, all of it counts! It's not about winning, it's about participating!

If you do want to compete, of course, we do love ourselves a game. Challenges will be posted as a graphic to this very group at the beginning of the Readathon. At the end of the day, we'll total points and pages up, and the winners will be announced on our next episode of the Eclectic Readers on ‪‎SunriseRobot‬ - coming to your favorite podcast app on July 15th! That's right, the glory of being immortalized in a podcast shout-out could be yours!

If you just want to read and share your experiences, here are the check-in times and topics;

6:00 AM: What time did you start reading today? How did you prepare?
8:00 AM: What goals do you have for your Readathon today?
10:00 AM: How are you reading today: audiobook, ebook, oldschool paper copy?
12:00 PM: What's going on in the background while reading?
2:00 PM: What's your favorite book to screen adaptation?
4:00 PM: Write a fanfic title with the book you are currently reading
6:00 PM: Give your dream cast for the main characters of the book you are currently reading.
8:00 PM: How many hours/pages total did you read today? Share any great experiences you had completing these challenges.

Can't wait to read with you all!

I haven't started reading this morning. I'm not feeling well so reading kinda makes my eyes tired. But, I did read for 20 minutes last night before going to sleep. Darn sinus pressure.

No preparation this time around. I'm going to try and listen to the audiobooks I'm in the middle of.

message 14: by Megan (new)

Megan (meganbrinckerhoff) I started reading at 6:15 (sure would be nice if the baby would sleep in a bit lol). But I read three books out loud to him, so 2 points

message 16: by Sue (new)

Sue (ruri_kaichou) | 333 comments Mod
Fit in as much reading as possible. Like right now, I'm listening to Annihiliation. I listened to it while I was cooking and I'm squeezing a few more minutes before I get the girls to start our day.

6:00am check-In: I pretty much started right at 8:00pm last night and got in a couple of hours of my audiobook of "Wild."

8:00am I'm currently in the middle of 3 books, so I'd say my goal would be to finish one, but I'm not sure how much reading I'm going to get done today, we'll see!

message 18: by Megan (new)

Megan (meganbrinckerhoff) Goals...I need to download an audiobook to listen to while we go for a walk!

10:00 AM: How are you reading today: audiobook, ebook, oldschool paper copy?

message 20: by Meredith (new)

Meredith (merethebookgal) | 214 comments Mod
10:00am check in: Technically the 3 books I'm currently reading consist of an ebook, audiobook, and a hardback paper copy, but we'll see if I get around to reading all 3 today ;)

Time to catch up on my check-ins!

6:00 AM - I started reading last night right when the Readathon started. I had a book I'd been reading already, so I had it waiting with some ice cream when it was time to begin. This morning, I didn't start reading until right before 10, because apparently all the prep work and excitement for the Readathon made me tired!

8:00 AM - My goal for this Readathon is to finish The Crown's Game before my YA book club meeting at 2 (yep, cutting it a little close here). I also would like to go back to American Gods and get some of that knocked out today. It's been a really slow start with that one for me, and it seems today will be the perfect day to fix that.

10:00 AM - Both the books I want to read today are old school: The Crown's Game is a hardback and American Gods is a paperback. I've got a book of Jane Austen's letters on my Kindle app though, if I need an ebook on my way to my book club meeting. So many books, so little time!

message 23: by Megan (new)

Megan (meganbrinckerhoff) Well, I was in such a rush to get out the door to music class on time I forgot to bring earbuds with me, so no audiobook yet!

message 24: by Jeannette (new)

Jeannette (jmtrivera) | 517 comments Mod
I forgot my point count!

I've got:
Reading while eating
A female author
An author I've never read before
A protagonist with two parents (though one is very sickly - what is WITH parents in YA books?!)
And a character with a birthday (just like our book club and podcast, yay!)

So that's 8 so far. I have a feeling American Gods will give me very few points though, so this could be my high point. I will enjoy it! :-)

Tara wrote: "Dogs are snoring. Also, female protagonist, female author... and finished. New book time."

I don't think we have female protagonist, but hold on to that one for when we look for challenges for the next readathon! :-)

I just finished my book too! It's pretty quiet here with the hubby out, so I blazed through the last part. Goal 1 completed!

message 28: by Megan (new)

Megan (meganbrinckerhoff) Reading while eating (lunch)! two points :)

Sue (ruri_kaichou) | 333 comments Mod
Aside from the obvious LotR trilogy. I really like A Midsummer's Night Dream with Kevin Kline. But that's a play so if we're looking for novel to screen, I would have to say the old-school animated movie of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. That's how I first discovered the world of Narnia.

message 33: by Megan (new)

Megan (meganbrinckerhoff) Of course there was ice! lol

1 - Listening to an audiobook
1 - Book by an author you've never read before

message 39: by Megan (new)

Megan (meganbrinckerhoff) Kenneth Branagh's Much Ado is an all time favorite!! And Princess Bride is amazing, love it! Fellowship of the Ring would also be on there as well as Pride and Prejudice, the Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth version - I probably watch it at least once a year. And while not my favorite movies, I want to mention To Kill A Mockingbird and Gone with the Wind as both great books and movies, although I read them in middle school so it's a bit hard to remember.

message 40: by Megan (new)

Megan (meganbrinckerhoff) I was able to get in a second walk and listened to The Twelve, 1 for audiobook, 2 for proof comfort zone ( horror).

message 44: by Kim (last edited Jun 25, 2016 03:47PM) (new)

Kim (kimguernsey) | 150 comments It's been a busy Saturday so I haven't read anything today so far. I did quite a bit last night though. I'm not sure I'll be finishing any books I started/stopped a while ago so that's a bummer...

6:00 AM: What time did you start reading today? How did you prepare?
I started reading last night about an hour after the readathon started. I checked out all sorts of ebooks and stacked up paper books that I hoped would get me some potential points (even though I didn't know the challenges yet).

8:00 AM: What goals do you have for your Readathon today?
At this point of the day, I hope to get at least 20-30 minutes of reading done before the readathon ends. It'll be tough since Lexa goes to bed same time the readathon is over so not sure how to sneak some reading in before then.

10:00 AM: How are you reading today: audiobook, ebook, oldschool paper copy?
I hoped to crack open a paper book but everything is going to be ebook.

12:00 PM: What's going on in the background while reading?
If I had been reading at this time, then we were over at my in-laws having lunch with the extended family.

2:00 PM: What's your favorite book to screen adaptation?
If by screen, we mean movies, then Harry Potter is definitely a favorite... maybe THE favorite.

4:00 PM: Write a fanfic title with the book you are currently reading
I'm not far into any new books (just finished Lean In) so I've got nothing. Although, "Annihilation" = "I've Got Nothing"... does that work? lol

6:00 PM: Give your dream cast for the main characters of the book you are currently reading.
Yep, still got nothing...

I had 5 points from earlier...
Character birthday, 2
Reading with a cold beverage, 1 (iced tea)
Book someone else is also reading, 1
Book by author never read before, 1
Female author, 1
Total 11

Sorry this one is late, folks! Lost track of time!

message 46: by Megan (new)

Megan (meganbrinckerhoff) As we wrap up the day I'm going to go ahead and put down all of my points and I'm also going to list the books I read from today!
Reading with cold drink 1
Performance in a book 2
Book outside your comfort zone 2
Listen to audiobook 1
Book someone else is reading 1
and it's not bookclub book 1
Read a book out loud to someone 2
Female author 1
Reading while exercising 2
Book recommended by family 2
Read while eating 2
Protagonist is a person of color 2
Total...20!

And today I read and listened to...
In This Land
The Following Foxhole Court
Adulthood Rites
The Twelve

This was a lot of fun! :D

message 47: by Megan (new)

Megan (meganbrinckerhoff) Oh, and author I've never read before 1

That makes brings me to 20.

Nice job, Megan!

To everyone else, again, apologies for being slightly late. This time it was the Metro's fault. So our final check-in is:

8:00 PM: How many hours/pages total did you read today? Share any great experiences you had completing these challenges.

Hope everyone had a great time reading!

message 49: by Meredith (new)

Meredith (merethebookgal) | 214 comments Mod
I didn't get to read as much as I would have liked, but got a bit farther through "Wild" and "Magonia" and here are my points:

Character having a birthday: 2
Protagonist with two parents: 2
More than half the setting is outdoors: 3
Made me cry: 3
Listening to an audiobook: 1
References another book: 2
Reading while eating: 2
Female author: 1

Total of 16 points! :-)
