Stephen King Fans discussion

Wondering how many have read Song Of Susannah in the Dark Tower series and what you thought of it. I just started reading it this week and so far I'm loving it.

Great book

I didn't love this title on it's own, because I didn't like reading about Mia, but as part of the series it was a great push forward.

Yes. It wouldn't stand alone very well, like the others. It was my least favorite book in the series.

Until The Wind Through the Keyhole

I really liked it. It reminded me of a chapter in an old Republic serial with a cliffhanger ending. I also liked the format of the book--definitely unique in the DT saga. Not my favorite DT book, but not my least favorite.

I enjoy this one! I agree that the Mia/Susannah bits are not as interesting to me as the rest of the book, but it is necessary. Definitely a good book, just not one of my ultimate favorites of the 8 official DT books.

Just finished this one tonight and I gotta say it blew me away. What a cliffhanger. On to the last book in the series to see how it ends. Thank you Mr. King for your outstanding writing.

Just started this four months after finishing Wolves of the Calla and I've forgotten what todash means as well as Watch Me face. Help please!

Man. Anyone else have mixed feelings on this series?

I'll say, first and foremost, King is my favorite writer. I have read upwards of half of his library, and absolutely love most of it (only a few that left me a little "meh").
I am currently on SOS in my first DT read-through, so I may be getting ahead of myself. To summarize my feelings leading up to this one:

I : Cool, but left me more perplexed than anything.
II: Awesome. I am officially on-board.
III: Wow, this series is completely off the wall. Really into it now.
IV: Not only my favorite, but now one of my favorite's of King, period.
V: Felt a little episodic, but absolutely loved it.

And then, I got to this one. 50 pages in, I hung it up for a year. Now, I have finally decided to plow on and finish this series. I have maybe 70 pages left, and I've heard it has an amazing cliffhanger, and VII really brings it home. But I'd be lying if I didn't say SOS made me stall out, and I am forcing my way through it a bit.

Am I the only one? What's wrong with me? #help

Ok so this thread seems to have been dormant for a little over 5 years but I'm going to comment here anyway....
I'm nearing the end of my second journey to the Dark Tower, currently reading this book for the second time. When I first read this book, honestly I wasn't all that impressed. I can't quite put my finger on why. It just didn't seem to grab hold of me the way the other books in the series did. I'm having a completely different experience this time around! Everything that's happening is just so cool! It also seems to be written in a little bit different style than the previous books which I'm also really enjoying. It's becoming really hard to stop reading for the day this time around! In my opinion, it's just more proof (as if we needed any more) of what a brilliant storyteller King is!

Derrick, for me it was the other easy around: during my first read I do enjoyed Eddie's and Roland's so much that I loved the whole book. The second time I knew what was coming and so the story just couldn't captivate me much.

Flower, that makes total sense! I absolutely enjoyed reading the entire series for the first time. I feel like I'm enjoying it even more for the second time! It's weird how the mind works and how you might pick up on different things with each reread.

I only just finished this series at then beginning of this year. I do remember struggling with SOS, but I am curious how a future reread will do with me knowing how everything turns out.

I feel like I'm able to focus on different aspects of the story since I know how everything is going to end up.

Wolves of the Calla is one of my five favorite Stephen King books. I had a really hard time plowing through Song of Susannah. The one thing that kept me going is that 7 of us were listening to the series one behind the other at the same time, so I HAD to finish for the next person. A couple of us would discuss it and that also helped a lot with appreciating it a little bit more.
That experience was one of the best reading experiences I ever had, and you could tell as we were working and listening at our own paces, who had gotten to the final book and how it affected them. The looks on their faces... I know I was a crying wreck. But it was worth it.

SoS might be my least favorite of the series, but I think it was a 4 star read. It's been 10 years. My memories of it are roont.

Wolves of the Calla is one of my favorites in the series! My very favorite of the series is Wizard and Glass. I think Roland's and Susan's love story is amazingly written! I also like The Wastelands a lot! All the action in that one is so much fun to read!

We're just starting this as a group read if you want to add to the discussion. :)

So far, W & G is my favorite of all the king books for the same reason you like it, Derrick. I also like Wolves a lot. Don't want to say too much negative about Song of Susannah up front, but here's my review.

I loved it. I mean, I love them all. Susannah is such a special character to the whole series and this was a wonderful nod. Who she/they were, how they developed, how what happens in the last book makes sense to her and her decisions. I don’t really see this being a stand alone read as there are too many SK webbings back and forth, especially for the sake of Jake and Father Callahan.
