I expect they didn't put in the back story...Glass's life before the attack. Also he told about Bridger's back story.
Plus some things which happen quickly take a bit of explaining.

If you liked Tenderness of Wolves, I think you might like this. It is a much more macho book, but still it is a journey through rugged wilderness. It is a less complex, straight forward book, but some interesting historical info...though not Canadian.

Hmmm, thank you. I guess we'll see. I can't remember if I rated The Tenderness of Wolves as "ok" or "good". Less complex, more straightforward might in its favour for me, though.

Good to know. I've been interested in the movie but don't know if I will watch it or not.

That's a shame. I was looking forward to DiCaprio's Oscar winning performance. :(

That's a shame. I was lookin..."
If I remember correctly, it said at the beginning of the movie based loosely on the book by Punke. Going in with that expectation might help.

For mere excitement, one doesn't get a much better read than theThe Revenant: A Novel of Revenge, in my opinion. Extreme action from one end to the other, including of course being mauled by a bear.
The history behind Hugh Glass is the hero of The Revenant is quite interesting as well. Glass is a man who certainly led an interesting life. I won't tell you any details, because that is also part of the story.
Now there are some disputes about what actually occurred in this story. Some parts of it may be the stuff of legends at a bit of a tall tale and that I will leave to the scholars to argue.
For a tale of frontiersman guts and glory this is quite a find.
