I really enjoyed this story. It was very well paced and a real page turner. A lot of my enjoyment came from the fact that it is set in Ireland, and also that it doesn't feature any of the gory torture scenes that are so common in contempary thrillers.

The book is centered on a man whose girlfriend goes missing while on a cruise ship. The main charactor is very well drawn and it's easy to empathise with him. The second strand of the story is not so appealing but is interesting.

I liked the premise that crimes committed in international waters fall between the gaps in terms of juristiction.

I felt that the end of the story did not quiet live up rest of the book, which is why it missed a 5 star rating from me. As a debue novel it was good and I look forward to hearing more from this writer.

I felt pretty much the same as you Margo and I look forward to her next book - a fast-paced, holding thriller.

Romain's story was upsetting and almost another book in itself - what a heart-breaking childhood he had. Firstly, a mother who couldn't love him and then dealing with high functioning autism and being totally misunderstood. I thought it was interesting that he was so conflicted by his 'darkness' and not being able to be 'good' while Corinne felt morally ok with murdering her son, Adam killed Peter but considered himself not a bad person because he jumped in after him to save him and Peter murdered two innocent women but seemed to think it was justified. The only honest, self-aware person was Romain who was considered a psychopath by society. There was alot of food for though in this side story for me.

Yes, I thought there was a bit too much going on at the end of the book. It got a bit confusing and at one stage I thought that I had actually missed Estelles murder!
I was half expecting Corinne to be the killer in an effort to stop Romain procreating and thus bringing more "bad" children into the world. Corinnne was truly a heartless mother, but in her defence there was no autism awareness in those days and she truly didn't understand her sons behaviour. The fact that he was the result of rape l, I think, further condemned him in her eyes.
